Now that I have it back together, I jacked one front wheel off the ground and tried to move it from the 3 and 9 o'clock positions to check for play.

When I've used this test before on other vehicles there wasn't any movement, but in those cases the steering wheel also didn't move at all.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hey everyone, I have another recent thread about my power steering rack with a slow leak. I opted to reassemble the car "as-is" and make the rack a winter project since the leak was small, but now I'm trying to make sure there isn't excessive play in the steering. I just finished a suspension refresh/upgrade to Koni sport struts and Cayman R springs . As part of the refresh, I changed out the inner and outer tie rod ends. Now that I have it back together, I jacked one front wheel off the ground and tried to move it from the 3 and 9 o'clock positions to check for play. I can move the wheel a bit side-to-side, which isn't good, but it seems like the movement is directly translating into movement of the steering wheel, versus "slop" in the system. When I've used this test before on other vehicles there wasn't any movement, but in those cases the steering wheel also didn't move at all. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is common to Caymans , or if I might need to accelerate my winter project plans. Thanks in advance for any assistance or ideas.

POST 2Original post

If you did the inner & outer tie rods it needs an alignment for sure, maybe start there.

POST 3Original post

I’m curious if the other cars you’ve tried this on also had hydraulic power steering. I wonder if that has any effect on if your side-to-side movement and it translating to the wheel. It may be a little easier/more direct to move the wheel and steering wheel in a hydraulic system vs one with an electric motor. I’m not sure if this would make a difference but it’s a thought.
