I think while you are delving you might try removing the starter and clean the bearing and the pinion then re grease the bearing end.

I was thinking of replacing the Y-cable while i'm in there as it does suffer with slow starting when hot and wondered if there was anything else I should be checking out at the same time?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My alternator has decided to give up this week so will be buying a new Bosch one shortly as it also has a bit of bearing whine. I was thinking of replacing the Y-cable while i'm in there as it does suffer with slow starting when hot and wondered if there was anything else I should be checking out at the same time?

POST 2Original post

You could refurb it yourself, the regulator pack is about £12 from autodoc and there are bearing kits available for a few £'s. I do not have the link for the bearing kit but ebay is your friend. I have done 2 alternators so far and it is an easy job. I did a write up with pictures a while back. I think while you are delving you might try removing the starter and clean the bearing and the pinion then re grease the bearing end. The end has a bearing cap and the ones i have looked the grease had hardened. After cleaning and re greasing they were like new.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Martin. I did consider refurbing mine as it's probably just the regulator that's gone but have ordered a new one to be sure, along with a new belt. Will definitely remove the starter and give it a once over though :thumb:
