Suggestion
It had a shift rod sensor failure, so that would need to be repaired (take the sensor out of your old trans).
Leading evidence: 'Repair (take the sensor out of your old trans)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair (take the sensor out of your old trans)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My
2012 cayman s
broke the oil cooler inside the transmission and coolant went into my tranny destroyed every clutch possible. My tech is telling me we need a new tranny. Any idea where I can get one? I’m located in Puerto Rico and will love to fix the car.
Specializedgerman in Sacramento area, CA has one but I think for parts only. They are also in eBay but went direct to them when I bought my rear cross strut brace.
I have a unit out of a 2011
Cayman S
. It had a shift rod sensor failure, so that would need to be repaired (take the sensor out of your old trans). It's in Richmond VA so shipping might be better than from the west coast. The car had 79K miles IIRC when it failed. PM for more details. Willing to try and help find a shipper etc.
The OP has a 2012 which is also a
987.2
. I just noticed that the years listed for this forum are incorrect
There is no such thing as a
2012 981
as the forum label says
The first
981
was a 2013, and even then only a
Boxster
, as the first
981 Cayman
was a 2014 MY
The end MY of the forum title is also incorrect. The
981
models stopped in 2016, not 2018. The
718
had already been out for two years by 2018
The
981 Boxster
was sold as MY 2013 by
Porsche
and the
981 Cayman
came a year later.
981
Owners know this, they don't say my car was purchased 2012 when they call the dealer service, parts store, auto shop, or when they sell it, etc.
The OP stated
2012 Cayman S
so that is
987.2
and not a
981
.
Never let good data get in the way of US marketing. US marketing, if asked why it says, on factory plaque riveted to the car, 2012 when people are buying 2013
Boxster
... the answer would probably be "Those are metric years"
Same if you read any car magazine. You get it first week of February 2023, it states it is March 2023 issue. US years and months. In EU, you have metric years - and months.

Registration and MY are not the same when talking about mechanical & technicalities of the car.
OP is asking
PDK
replacement, you have to make sure you have the right part as this is a very expensive one.
Just an admin note - some of the forum titles pre-dated me. Some were my mistakes (usually based on Wikipedia..) I think I have all the years correct now. If not - please PM me with the error (a URL link to it would be handy.)
Let's try and get back to the OP's issue - he needs a
PDK
.. (for a
987.2
)
Might want to move this to the 987 section. It was posted in the 981 section, but the OP has a 987.2. That's why I asked the initial question about 987.2/981 compatibility, and I think that's what started this whole thing.
There is a comprehensive list of VIN number formats and a VIN decoder available on the Stuttcars site, which specifically mentions
Model Year
.
Porsche VIN decoder
This should provide a definitive answer to the Model Year question. My own 981, which has a Nov' 2013 build date, is given as a 2014 Model Year by the VIN decoder. There's some interesting information available about how the car left the factory in terms of the build features, options,
etc
.
Eluab787, any idea what caused the oil cooler to fail?
PDK
transmissions in the
987.2
series have a good reputation for reliability, and I have one in my 2009
Cayman
(which, by the way, was first registered in Puerto Rico before second owner moved it to the States) so hearing of your issue with catastrophic failure is concerning.
Go back ad re read my post and tell me what is not true. Your
cayman
is a first year model of 2014 which is correct and exactly what my post says
Guys, I’m getting tired of arguing this ridiculous point over and over again when the facts are what they are.
The first
981
model was the
Boxster
released as 2013 MY
The
981 Cayman
came along the following year and is a 2014 model
WHAT YEAR ANY CAR IS BUILT IS IRRELEVANT TO THE MODEL YEAR DESIGNATION BY THE MANUFACTURER!!!!!!!
I am astounded that so many people on a technical car forum such as this don’t understand this very basic point that applies not only to Porsches, but any automobile brand.
The
981
was only released as model years 2013 to 2016.
Anyone that can’t seem to grasp this simple concept is free to believe whatever nonsense otherwise they want to, however the great thing about facts is that they are still facts whether anyone wants to believe it or understands them
let’s please stop derailing this thread any further with this silly conversation
100% to ICNU:

Yes - let's stop.
FWIW - Europe and the US have different standards for this. In the US, generally (but not always) any car manufactured after September 1st of the year is legally titled as the following year car. I believe in Europe - they make it simple. It's titled the same year that it's manufactured. The reason for the US deal is - US manufacturers used to announce their "New!" models around August, and then they started appearing on the showroom floors on September 1st. The dealers didn't want to be selling last years models, so they bumped the year of the car up to the next year. I guess in Europe - they usually just made the car and dated it.
But - sometimes things got reversed - Porsche went from the 955 Cayenne to the 957 Cayenne, skipping the 2007 model year in the US. The 955 was titled through 2006, even if made and sold in 2007. Starting in 2008, Porsche started titling the 957 series as a 2008. I believe in Europe there was a 2007 Cayenne - a 955.
Not worth arguing over what year a car is here.. if someone wants to take that up, start a NEW thread and anyone interested can climb on-board.
Thanks for your cooperation!
(yes I know it's old thread) My
Boxster
is 2012 and registered in mid-summer, 3 days before official release date in US. Car arrived earlier than expected and he let me take it. I am pretty sure it's first
981
registered in US!!!
Yeah, it's confusing as hell, I long learned to call it 2013 when need parts and service
Still love it and not planning on upgrading at this time
