Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone any advice how to remove the offside cam cover? Mine is leaking slightly and if it not too involved a DIY job i'm keen to sort it.

POST 2Original post

Unless you really know what you are doing I wouldn't recommend it for the average DIYer. The camshafts are held in by the cover, and when you remove it....... There are special tools to hold the cams in place while you remove the cover, so without them you could end up in trouble.

POST 3Original post

As Richard said, if you just unbolt the cam cover you can break the camshafts. There is a special tool but I have never seen the mechanics use it. They rotate the crankshaft so that none of the lobes are depressing the lifters, then remove the cover. Repeat for the other side. When I bought my 1997 Boxster in 1999 I saw a slight seepage from one of the covers. I tightened all the bolts and it went away. They are small bolts so do not get carried away. Just snug them up. The other source for leaks in that area is the spark plug tubes, which is another subject.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks, good to know... i have restored a few mini engines but for the sake of a slight drip and potential for complications i will leave it alone... looked at the manual and figured that it wasn't your usual rocker cover...
