I previously ran a modded Cayman S and currently in a quick Caterham but thinking of coming back to Porsche...I might have the option to buy the Cayman back which is tempting but I've been there and always liked the idea of a breathed on 996...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi. I previously ran a modded Cayman S and currently in a quick Caterham but thinking of coming back to Porsche...I might have the option to buy the Cayman back which is tempting but I've been there and always liked the idea of a breathed on 996... I still need to sell the 7 but just thought I'd put the feelers out to see if there's any well sorted early 996s with the right mods that might become available.. Please pm if that's the case.. Thanks, Ed

POST 2Original post

Can you elaborate on Jethro spec, do you mean early C2 with some mods or with full on engine swap?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi. Either really. Certainly a manual C2, ideally early , ( without sunroof but not a deal breaker ), ideally with aerokit, ideally with lightweight wheels etc Would need quality suspension, exhaust etc as a minimum A 3.7 or 3.9 with associated suspension and brakes etc all the better.. I could be tempted to start with a £15k car and add bits/build but quite often it's cheaper to buy a car that's had a lot of the work done, ( not as much fun but I've experienced upgraditis before...) Hope this helps, Ed

POST 4Original post

Sounds a bit like mine. I did have thoughts creeping in about maybe selling but no idea what would replace it.

POST 5Original post

Sounds much like mine, which I took off sale to store for the winter: https://www.amsporsche.com/996-Carrera-2-Manual PM me if you are interested.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses..I'll bear them in mind but it's prob something along the lines of Mallones car, ( or popopbangs car on PH thread ), I'd be after I think on the basis they've had a good bit of work done.. Otherwise I'd probably start a fresh on basis i could choose the bits i want..I know sometimes you have to take the plunge but if the mods aren't that advanced or to my taste I'm not really buying a head start... As mentioned I'm not ready just yet put thought I'd put a marker down in case people are considering selling, ( but in no rush and just want to keep my details to hand for when the time comes ). Please do just drop me PMs if that's your situation and I'll respond and keep at hand for when the 7 has sold... Thanks, Ed

Have you seen this one? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202209280205967

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes thanks...I did also see it on here privately for a lot less too. Not a big fan if Zenith and tbh it doesn't look like that much has been done to it vs a stock car...It is very nice but prob not for me but thanks fir the heads up...

POST 10Original post

I love the wheels on that blue car, and obviously I'm going to say that the suspension is the right choice (although with the standard caveat around springs), but looks like most of the value is in the low mileage? If you wanted a driver I'd probably go for something higher mileage with more work done. But, I've made my car worth £5 by throwing a fortune at it, so maybe don't listen to me.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes my thoughts precisely....TBH I'm getting seriously tempted to buy my old Cayman back as its had so much money tipped into it and drives so well that it makes a lot of sense..Obviously I've been there and was looking forward to a new adventure but worry that putting close to £30k into a 996 might still come up short vs just under £20k into such a well sorted Cayman in terms of dynamics/performance etc...If a really well sorted 996 popped up at the right time then I'd take a look but anything mildly warmed up but at strong money is not that appealing tbh..

POST 12Original post

Some of the best advice I've taken was to decide what "era" of car I wanted and then throw all my money at that... i.e. the Cayman and 996 are from different eras and are always going to yield their own distinctly different/particular experience even on the other side of a lot of modding - better to start out from the right point and avoid disappointment - for me it was the very last of the cable throttle 996s - a cruder, softer, more limited car in a lot of ways, but what I enjoy (modern e-throttle cars drive me faintly nuts despite being better than my 996 in essentially every 'measurable' way!!!) :dont know:

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes...My predicament is I can't afford an aircooled hotrod or anything GT.. I like cars to be analogue, small and light so at £30k in Porsche land its 987/996/997... A nicely modded version of any of them would be great in its own way and 996 certainly appeals due to the more classic feel but a really good one will be near 977 money and a lot more than the Cayman.. I fancy a 911 because 911 but the window to buy my old Cayman back won't be open forever so I would need to move reasonably quickly if I want it and it just seems a safe bet and the most bang for buck..I loved the size balance, noise, built quality but at the time just craved a little more power.. That's really the reason I was looking for a modded car because tbh I don't think a stockish 996 would see which way the Cayman went so it would need to be well fettled to appeal.. The most frustrating thing is that I know I could potentially buy the Cayman and send it away for a 3.9 conversion which would create a great car for the same price as a boggo 997 and for £10k less than a Cayman R but I know it would be financially lunacy...

POST 14Original post

I've had fair few P cars now, in the era you seem to be considering, I went 996C4S / 987.1 Cayman + 987.2 Spyder / 997 GT3 / 996C2 throttle cable To me a Cayman and 911 are so very different to drive. I happen to prefer the drive and balance of the 911, and have the most fun in them. If you are hankering after your old Cayman, maybe you need a little time in a 911 to check if it's actually what you want? This is mine...

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nice car and have watched your videos with interest, ( I enjoyed modding the Cayman in a similar manner ).. I agree and would love to drive a few back to back but don't really have the opportunity ..I'm sure I'd like both for different reasons but starting to think i should grab the Cayman whilst its up for grabs and then see how I feel and sample a few 911's thereafter to see if I ultimately want to make the move in the longer term to 911.. I appreciate this all sounds a bit indicisive but you know what its like Im sure and if theres an element of time pressure involved its even worse..! :frustrated:
