Needless today, I was very careful to observe which way the old ones point and installed the new ones that way, but one side is now making a lot of clanking noise just like a tensioner not getting enough oil in it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just replaced the two chain tensioners on my 997 Turbo. There are two different part numbers, and the parts look identical. Can someone tell me... 1. What are the differences between the two? 2. Which way does the nipple point, up or down on left, and on the right? Needless today, I was very careful to observe which way the old ones point and installed the new ones that way, but one side is now making a lot of clanking noise just like a tensioner not getting enough oil in it. The oil line on the left is attached to the top of the tensioner cover whereas the oil line on the right does not attach to the tensioner cover (which points down)

POST 2Original post

Post a picture of the 2 parts if you can, it'll be easier for members to give you details about them. -Dmitry

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Found my own answers. Bank 1, 1-3 Cyl, tensioner with the open nipple facing up, toward the cap where oil is pumped in. Bank 2, 4-6 Cyl, tensioner with the open nipple facing down, toward the cap where oil is pumped in. The difference in the two tensioners must be in the check valve to keep oil in while engine is off where gravity pulls one away from the opening or toward the opening.

POST 4Original post

Oil pressure is different in different parts of the engine
