You won't have to be careful and I doubt you need to check it past the first week or two, like any repair of this nature, to make sure it was done right.

Suggestion

If the crankshaft cradle was too out of line on the 996/986s they would replace the entire motor, otherwise they fixed the seal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Yesterday as I was leaving to go to work, I noticed streams of oil running down the garage floor, right down the centerline of my baby (2007 S with 2600 miles). I took it to the dealer and he said it was the dreaded Rear Main Seal (actually dreaded was not the term the dealer used it is my term). The dealer is fixing it for me now. I have read a lot of posts here on the site and I still have a few questions. If some kind soul would help me I would sure appreciate it. 1) Since I know so little about this, can I expect that once it is fixed that I not have to worry again or is this something I will have to be careful with and do constant checkups in the future? 2) Will the car leak (drip) oil in the future? 3) Is there anything I should be doing to make sure the problem is taken care of properly (The dealer seems to understand the problem and I have a lot of confidence in the dealer but I know next to nothing about the innards of a car – I doubt I could pick out a rear main seal if I had to pick between a dozen parts that were laid in front of me). Thank You for any help you can provide.

POST 2Original post

Sorry to hear about this problem. My recommendation is to go over to ******** and 6speedonline and read everything you can about the RMS issue on the 996 boards. Those guys have had a lot more time and experience with this issue. Best of luck and don't worry too much, you still have the warrenty and Porsche has been dealing with this for a while. I'm sure this was just a fluke.

POST 3Original post

If I recall correctly, prior posts on this website indicated that the RMS problem had been fixed with the 997 and 987. Is this not true?

POST 4Original post

The RMS problems seen with the 986 and 996 models have pretty much disappeared, and the endemic problems in the manufacturing process that caused them have been fixed... when there is an RMS problem with a 997 or 987, it is about 99% that the seal itself was installed incorrectly when the motor was put together... usually when this happens, it is found that the gasket has been twisted in some manner... I don't think this is cause for general alarm, I seriously doubt the problems seen in the 996 and 986 cars are back... if you want to read up on it, do so, but there's a lot of "sky is falling" type info on both of those boards mentioned above... To answer your questions: 1. This is one fix the dealers really know how to do now... if, for no other reason, than they have a lot of past experience. If the crankshaft cradle was too out of line on the 996/986s they would replace the entire motor, otherwise they fixed the seal. The seal has also been redesigned, and is based on the rear main seal on the Cayenne , and is made of Teflon. You won't have to be careful and I doubt you need to check it past the first week or two, like any repair of this nature, to make sure it was done right. 2 If they've fixed it right - no, it won't. 3. See above - They've done this before, many times... back with the 996/986s. Please let us know how it goes... brad

Won't add to the sound advice above, but I can help with this part of your problem. Of the dozen parts, pick the one that looks like this:

POST 6Original post

I'm sure this is rude, but I laughed at your post. And I wouldn't know an RMS if it tapped me on the elbow....

POST 7Original post

Thank You all. Sometimes when things happen you feel that life is against you, to be honest my note seems to show panic that I do not really have. Thank You BEEZ for your information & calmness and thank you STLPCA for your picture. Now I know to pick the part that looks like a condum. I will follow up if there are any problems, Thanks again.
