POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was trying to index the various forums because I need new rear tires for my 996 Carrera 4S. Besides the Michelins, are there other good tires you have used?

POST 2Original post

I have Sumitomo HTR Z3 on my 6Turbo which are a great daily use tire. They're up to Z4 which I have heard are not as good.

POST 3Original post

I use General G-Max RS tires in warm weather and Continental Extreme Contact in cold. Both have served me really well.

POST 4Original post

OP - What are you already running? All-season or summers (and put the car in the garage when you get the cold snap)? What kind of tire attributes are you searching for? Did you hit up Tirerack reviews?

POST 5Original post

AWD owners can comment more but isn't there a limitation or two regarding F/R tire diameters? That might play into your decision.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 19574792

Yes there is P-spec on diameter differences. I do not remember the exact difference, but rear must be smaller diameter than the front IIRC. There was a page on tires & diameters with various combinations. Lost it when laptop crashed. Others may know where to find it...hopefully. YMMV

POST 7Original post

General G-Max RS are a great budget oriented tire. Stiffer sidewall than Michelin which results in a bit rougher ride by comparison but returns a more direct turn-in. They're actually made in the same factory as Continental tires, just use a different mold. Michelin PS4S is still my favorite all around tire.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 19574792

Factory sizes for C4S/Turbo are 225/40-18 and 295/30-18. I do not think PS4 are available in these sizes.

POST 9Original post

I really like my Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires. Good grip, pretty quiet and a bit cheaper than the PS4.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 19575697

I have used these on my 996 for the last year and theyre a pretty awesome tire. Ive used PS4S before, but on a Golf R so its not really comparable, but they feel pretty similar. At the time Michelin wasnt producing the PS4S in the 285/30/18. It looks like thats changed, but I dont know if Ill change to them when replacement time comes.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No track or hard stuff...just summer in florida......

POST 12Original post

I had Pirelli P Zero Rossos on my C2 when I bought it. They were fine, but got really loud near the end of their tread life. I tried the Sumitomo HTR Z3 and they were pretty good for the price. The only think I didn't like about them was the shoulder profile as it didn't protect the rims as well as the Pirellis. Unfortunately I found it was easier to nick up the rims with the Sumitomos. I changed over to the Bridgestone Potenzas and have been happy with those. Price is a little higher than the Sumitomos, but the shoulder profile is similar to the Pirellis and the rims are a more protected. Wear has been good for me. Overall, I've been happy with that change.

POST 13Original post

My C2 came on Sumitomo HTRZ3's when I bought it and was very nervous feeling in the rear while understeering everywhere. Very weird, I've used that tire before on other cars and it's not great but also not awful. Unfortunately I don't see C4S sizes for this but I'm currently a huge fan of Advan V601's as a pure street tire. Seems to last longer than PS4(s) as far as heat cycling goes, ride quality is good and dry grip is basically equivalent once you warm them up.

POST 14Original post

I did contnentals on my C2 this year. 225/40/18 and 285/30/18. Quite happy. Had pzreros before which I did not like. Would flat spot all the time.

POST 16Original post

Agree. The RE71RS are exceptional tires. Still haven't experienced them in the rain, but for driving around town and on the track, they are very good sticky rrubber. Surprisingly, tire noise is very low for a performance tire. But if you want exceptional handling on the street, in warm weather months, these are the tires. Just as a heads up, make sure you have a good tire guy that has the tools to get them on the wheels with the stiff sidewalls. I have a couple of sets of wheels so I run the RE71RS on one set and the Michellin AS4s on the other for cold, wet crappy weather.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19576188

Same here. Sumitomo's felt like I had a bad case of bump steer (without any bumps, lol). Once in a corner they would not hold a line without constant steering corrections. In a smooth constant radius corner, would need steering corrections continuously. Dart back & forth slightly, not confidence inspiring. Checked alignment, perfect factory settings. Changed out to some half worn tires I had, Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tw 60. Well all the darty under steer was gone completely. Feels like I have magnetic tires on a steel road. Talk about holding a line....but tire noise is way way high. Got to be real careful, can pull so many g's with those tires, oil pump doesn't have a prayer of keeping up. Still have them on my 996.1. don't take it out except on sunny days/clear nights. As water and tw 60 don't work well together. My recommendation,,, I'd stick with factory sizes and the big name tires. All the recommended ones on Tire Rack all seem pretty good. Great tires aren't cheap.

POST 18Original post

I have PS4S tires in 225/40R18 and 295/30ZR18 on my C4S and I love them. I could not believe how my car drove better after replacing my SUMITOMO tires. It was like having a new car.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 19578869

Same exact story here. PS4S is a superior tire to the Sumis and the transformation is stunning..

POST 20Original post

I have run Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s on my C4S for almost 20 years and am very happy with them. Almost all street use (just one track day). Great in both dry and wet. Im in SF Bay Area so weather isnt too extreme. My wifes 987.2 Boxster came with Continental xtreme contact sports and they were horrible. The car felt loose. Suffered with them hoping they would wear out but finally pulled the trigger and put on PS2s and wow what an improvement. Car is rock solid and weve run this way for the past 8 years. Just picked up a 2001 996.1 C2 cab and it came with Michelin PS All Season 4s. Pushed the car moderately hard in the twisties and it felt solid but not much seat time yet. They are WAY quieter than the PS2s on the C4S, which is nice. Im looking forward to us taking both cars out sometime to compare.

POST 21Original post

I have AS4's on an E93. They have impressive grip for an all-season tire and they're great in the rain. I haven't tried them in snow but doubt they would measure up to full winter tires, which I highly recommend to anyone who must needs drive in snow/slush/ice conditions.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 19579708

We have plenty of rain/wet so great to hear they are good for that. Fortunately, I also wont be taking the C2 anywhere near snow, slush or ice. (!)

POST 23Original post

At the end of the day, I don't think tires is a place where you want to save, especially when driving a performance car like your 996. You can have a new big motor, fancy suspension and etc but the tires is the only thing keeping you on the road. Even for PS4S which are on the top end price wise are quite reasonable when you spread the cost over how long you'll use them.

POST 24Original post

Agree with Pete. Get the best damn tires that match with your purpose and conditions you will be driving in. Assuming your chassis and brakes are in perfect working order, tires make all all of the difference. If you live in a 4 season town, you may need to splurge for an extra set of wheels to run warm and cold weather tires. As an example, I run a set of RE71RS for track and grippy road driving on one set of wheels and a set of Michelin All Season 4s on my second set of wheels for wet and cold weather where softer and less responsive characteristics don't matter.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 19579743

If all you are concerned with is rain, I'd go with PS4S or its equivalent. I run the AS4's because their compound is okay to run in sub-freezing temperatures; full summer tires like the PS4S don't like those temps.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 19581455

I leaned that the (almost) hard way with summer Yokohamas on my 3.2 Carrera many years ago. Growing up in a warm climate, I had no idea cold temps were an issue for summer tires, but then got caught in unexpected snow and the car had no traction whatsoever. I was trying to slow from already crawling speed (10mph at most) and the car slid about 100 feet with full brakes on before it finally came to a stop, a couple feet short of hitting a parked bus. It was like a slow motion nightmare. I really don't recall how they were on pavement in the cold, but on a bit of fresh snow it was like sliding on ice skates. I went with Michelin Pilot All Season 4 tires, replacing Sumi's. Much nicer than the Sumi's. I do have a separate set of winter tires/wheels, but since I never actually drive in snow or after salt has been put down on the roads, thought all seasons were a better choice. In my tire replacements on various cars, I've found the Michelins seem to always be better than what was there before (e.g. Pirelli, Continental, and other lesser brands).

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks to everyone for their replies...I am down in Florida and do not race, so your input is helpful

POST 29Original post

Ive been happy with 2 sets of Continental DWS and the DWS06 (though couldnt get 285 in rear, went the 265). Great for all weather, light snow too. Comfortable ride, but not as sporty as the Michelin summer tires.

POST 30Original post
