Hi, I need some help with my 2008 987
Cayman
2.7 manual.
Th battery went flat after a period of time. I charged it. All the functions of the car are fine except that when I turn the key in the ignition absolutely nothing happens! This is the same with both keys.
Any ideas?
One idea not sure it will do anything but... Put the key in the door, lock the car. Wait a minute, insert the key back in the door, unlock the car. Try to start it.
Do you get anything when you insert the key? Any dash display or chime (door open)? Are you absolutely sure you, at no time, connected the battery terminals backwards? No shorting the cable when removing or reconnecting?
How dead was the old battery?
The dash displays as normal - even the stereo works it’s just the key does nothing turning through the positions.
Thanks I did try a version of that but will try again.
Yeeeeears ago the same thing happened to me... turns out I was turning the key to the left to start it... Godd how embarrassing....
There is a key fob relearning process. From my old memory....put the key in the ignition, turn it to the position just before it cranks the starter, hold the lock button in got about 10 seconds, then remove, reinsert and try to start the car. Worth a try.
It is possible your battery has failed. I misread your original post - thinking you
changed
the battery, not
charged
it. Once a battery goes too low a charge, it can be permanently damaged. It needs to be load-tested to make sure it actually has enough cranking amps. The fact that the radio plays doesn't mean the battery is fully functional. A weak battery has been known to cause all sorts of odd electronic symptoms. And it seems that the battery's condition is the only thing that has changed - that would be the first, and most likely, culprit to check. Other more remote possibilities would be unlikely and require diagnostic testing.
So, if none of the other suggestions you've received pan-out, I'd recommend removing the battery and taking it to an auto-parts store where they can do a load-test. In the US, most will do that for free.
I replaced the ignition switch module when I had similar problems with my 2007 2.7L. It's a fairly easy repair.
If its a manual, check the safety switch that is connected to the clutch that ensures the clutch is fully depressed before the engine will turn over? Mine went and I had exactly the experience you are having. Everything worked except the starter would not engage.
On my 987.2, you get a message on the display - something about depressing the clutch. I'm not sure if that applies to 987.1.
