Leading evidence: 'amp' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'amp' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair amp' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The guy who repaired the amp for me told me it's because of the bad roads and, of course, the hard suspension.

I got mine repaired twice so far and it cost me a lot.

I got it replaced under warranty and everything is fine now.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I recently picked up a
Cayman
... All good, love the car!
One problem however. The front 20CM door speakers seem to drop in and out, which is quite annoying. I'm not much of an electronics whiz, but it sound sto me like there is a loose connection somewhere.. Now before I start pulling the car to bits, anybody have any ideas/suggestions as to what the problem might be?
I understand these speakers are driven by an external amp that is wired to the
PCM
? Where is this amp exactly?
Thanks in advance!
I had that problem with my Plus System. It was a bad amp. I got it replaced under warranty and everything is fine now.
The amp is located behind the tire repair kit
That's great - thanks for the quicky reply... I'll have a look at it this evening and assuming everything is plugged in properly I guess it's going back to the dealer.
If it does turn out to be the amp - is it worth paying up for another
Porsche
one or would I be better off with an aftermarket one do you think? I don't have the
Bose
so my understanding is it might be easy enough to integrate an aftermarket amp into the system?
Thanks again!
It's the amp. These are defective. I got mine repaired twice so far and it cost me a lot. If you're out of warranty, get an aftermarket (if not too expensive, of course).
The guy who repaired the amp for me told me it's because of the bad roads and, of course, the hard suspension.
That's great - thanks for your help guys! Any ideas what a decent replacement amp would be. The car is out of warranty so I don't really want to overpay for another dodgy
Porsche
one!
Thanks again.
I also had the same issue with my ASK amplifier before upgrading to an aftermarket head unit. I have a 2008 and the ASK amplifier failed within 1 yr of use.
Robert
Will I be able to simply replace the amp with an aftermarket one or will the fibre optic system screw up that idea?
Sorry if I'm being dim this isn't really my area of expertise!
Not my area of expertise either... I hope someone else will chime in. In the mean time, some reading:

Cool thanks for the links!
Ideally I only want to replace the amp as I don't want to lose the
PCM
in the car. Maybe it would just be easier to buy a replacement
Porsche
Amp. I wonder if this one from a 997 would do the same job?
PORSCHE 997 STEREO AMPLIFIER UNIT 2008 997.645.331.01 on eBay (end time 25-Nov-10 20:01:50 GMT)
It looks the same! Mine says HW11 on it not HW10 however. Might be worth a try.
Brian-Boitano,
Which head unit do you have? If you have the CDR-24 with sound package plus non
bose
you can install aftermarket amp with no issues. however, not sure if you are aware the ASK amp only drives the subs and center channel.
Not sure of the configuration if you have the
Porsche
Nav unit.
rob
Hi,
I have
PCM
2.1
I'm aware thanks to these other guys that its the ASK amplifier that drives those door speakers and the centre speaker... and those are the ones which are malfunctioning. All of the other speakers which I understand are powered directly by the
PCM
are working ok.
I assume I can replace the ASK amp with an after-market one, however this will result in me losing the centre speaker? I might just do this, as I'm not sure what value the centre speaker adds anyway tbh!
Just something to think about.
you could run a 2 channel amp and have the door subs run mono on one channel and have the center channel run on the 2nd channel. hope this helps. I have been researching this also in the event the ASK amplifier fails again.
Rob
It seems we can make a club of owners with failed ASKs. Mine failed 2 times. Bottom line: 400 euros and 2 months without amplification
Funny thing is the guy who repaired it for me told me it's bound to happen again and nothing could be done about it. Guess it's bad design.
Ok thanks for all your help chaps... I think I'm going to simply replace the amp with another Ask one for the time being and the
next
time it breaks (as it sounds like it invariable will!) I'll try and come up with a more creative solution!
It was the amp.
I bought one from a crashed 997 off ebay which was visually identical but the connector had plastic nodes in ever such a slightly different position so I melted those off and hey presto it's working again! The ebay amp saved me about £150 from the new
Porsche
price which was nice.
Thanks to all those who helped me with this problem. I don't hold out too much hope of the Ask amp lasting forever, but at least it is working again for now!
Hi folks, I got a tip that you were discussing the ASK amplifier issues here. I repair these amps, and have fixed a lot of them. They all have had the same fault, a couple of internal components fail due to a design flaw.
Fixing it is fast and very cheap compared to buying a new amp. The new ones probably have the same problem too.
Contact me for details.
Cheers,
Tore
hello,
a bit of a thread resurrection here, but I have an indentical problem with my ASK amp on my car (997) and an internet search brough this up.
I was wondering if any of you could reccomend either
a) European based repairers for the amp; or
b) A suitable slot-in replacement, also non OEM; or
c) A source of second hand amps
Thanks in advance,
Riccardo
Hi Riccardo, I repair and stock
Porsche
original amplifier replacements.
I've done extensive research on these amplifiers used in M490 Sound Package Plus, an option in several
Porsche
models, and as standard in S models without
Bose sound system
.
Porsche
part number is 987.645.331.01 / 997.645.331.01 or other. (9xx.645.331.01)
The amps can develop an internal fault caused by a design flaw. The fault can be observed as either no sound at all, (a failing internal power circuit) or abnormal high sound volume on the bass channels.
Cheers
Tore
Hi Tore,
Thanks for your reply and separate email.
As an FYI for the forum, I have decided to send my amp to Tore as he guarantees his work for longer than
Porsche
would guarantee the new amp.
Tore B, you are a guru when it comes to fixing electronics. The first person I had my mind on when reading this tread was you. "Wounded if Tore would be aibel to fix this". And there you where
Surely know who to contact if I ever have problems with my electronics
