Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Disconnect negative (earth) battery terminal' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect negative (earth) battery terminal' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To help members who may want to remove their 996 steering wheel I have put together what I now believe is the correct procedure: (It works for me
)
- Turn Ignition 'On'. Keep key in Ignition (this is to prevent the alarm siren going off)
- Disconnect Negative (Earth) Battery terminal
-
Wait approx 30 mins to enable the Airbag Capacitor to discharge
- Turn Steering Wheel 90 degrees to the left. (anti-clock)
- Remove Torx screw (size 30) from rear of steering wheel
- Turn Steering Wheel 180 to the right (clockwise)
- Remove the 2nd Torx screw from rear of steering wheel
- Turn Steering Wheel back to straight ahead position
- Remove key from Ignition
- Slowly pull Airbag towards you and disconnect wires as necessary (noting positions)
- Mark both the end of the Steering Wheel and the face of the Steering Wheel Hub, at the straight ahead position. You will need to line these marks up when re-assembling to ensure Steering Wheel is straight when driving straight ahead
- Using a 24mm socket, undo centre nut holding the wheel on.
Do not totally remove the nut at this stage.
- Pull Steering Wheel towards you. This may require some force
- With wheel free from spline, now remove the centre nut
- To re-assemble, reverse the above procedure
NOTE: store the removed air bag
with the terminals facing downwards
, this is just in case it should get a signal from anywhere the bag will deploy, if you have it up the other way it would act like a projectile going at least 10 mtrs into the air!!
Dependent on the model you may need to do the following after re- connecting the battery:
Carry out procedures that may be listed in Owner's Manual under 'Replacing the Battery' e.g.
- Re-set Electric Windows (probably just the driver's side window) to provide one-touch operation by winding window fully down, pressing button for a second time, press again to wind full up, then press button yet again.
- Throttle calibration by turning key to the 'on' position, wait 30 secs (don't touch the pedals!) then start the car.
- On vehicles with PSM. If the PSM warning light illuminates, then re-calibration of the Steering Angle Sensor may be required. Check if it goes out by just driving the car (it should do, as it should be self calibrating) If not, then move the steering wheel away from the straight ahead position by more than 15 degrees (whilst static), then drive the car, at more than 5 mph, keeping the steering wheel at straight ahead for more than 10 secs.
- Re-set Clock
- Re-programme Radio Stations
