Suggestion

Ive been told the timing of the gear changes adapts to reflect the style of driving, not sure how or if true but I guess if driven in a spirited fashion it changes later, if driven softly they occur lower down the rev range.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I've noticed aggressive driving will hold 3rd (for example) at a higher rev for about 10s...but then back off and it goes back to normal.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone, I have an 996 Targa from 2002 - Lovely car...but...there is always a but ;-) The triptronic changes gear at very low revs which makes the engine a bit rough. When I am crusing the gearbox changes at around 1500-2500 Rpm's and at 65 Km/h I am in 5th gear... It is not a huge problem for me, but it does make the engine response a bit slow - If I kick down the torque comes quick, but still - Dont understand why the gearchange is done at such low revs. Is this something that can be tuned or adjusted, or is just how it should be?

POST 2Original post

Ive been told the timing of the gear changes adapts to reflect the style of driving, not sure how or if true but I guess if driven in a spirited fashion it changes later, if driven softly they occur lower down the rev range. I havent really tested it as Im a relatively calm driver. Mine eventually changes to 5th when cruising at 40 mph. Either way, one thing that would worry me is the engine sounding rough. No matter how sedately the car is driven it should purr at low revs and not sound rough.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well...let me rephrase, The engine is not sounding rough, it purrs like a kitten, but of course a porsche engine does not have its optimal tourque around 12-1500 Rpm's so when I clamp down the speeder then it takes a bit before the torque comes. But when it comes it is massive... Nic

POST 4Original post

I'm away from my car at the moment, so I can't check at what speed my Tip goes into 5th, but from memory, it won't be far away from the speed you say (45-50mph). If you drive it quicker (ie. push the throttle down 3/4, but don't engage kick down), you will find the gearbox holds onto the revs longer. It definitely adjusts to your driving style (but only temporarily), eg. I've noticed aggressive driving will hold 3rd (for example) at a higher rev for about 10s...but then back off and it goes back to normal. I've never had an auto before (well, never had a Tip before, but driven/borrowed a few automatics) and they definitely take a bit of experimenting. Based on your explanation, it sounds very normal to me.
