i would be tempted to leave well alone if you have dual row, or at least if you do an oil change then get the oil sent of to blackstone or similar for analysis, and or open the filter to see if you have any debris.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I have just been able to allocate a significant chunk of money to taking care of some things on my 996. I will be getting the LN Engineering IMS retro fit bearing. But my question to you all is, what else is good to have done "while you're in there?" The total budget is $4k or less. Clutch? If so, any recommended clutch upgrades? (Keep in mind, it is my daily driver and I really like the current character of the car) Timing chains? Anything related to the VarioCam? Thanks, in advance, for your suggestions.

POST 2Original post

I'm in the same boat on fixes. In greater Boston, there's a shop that does ims and rms for 1850. After I do that, I'm doing motor mounts, suspension and maybe bushings. Possible fabspeed cold air intake down the road.

POST 3Original post

Just some ideas. AOS, Water pump & low temp thermostat. There's some helpful info I just copied from Jake's FSI site into another thread.. careful what you wish for page 1 http://www.flat6innovations.com/inde...l=&limitstart= page 2 http://www.flat6innovations.com/inde...owall=&start=1

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

AOS was done 7k miles ago. I'll have to check my records to see if the water pump was done. Low temp thermostat... check. Tensioners... check. Oh- I am currently at 112k miles. List so far: IMS Tensioners Low-temp thermostat Water pump

POST 5Original post

The traditional trio is IMSB/rear main seal/clutch. The OE Sachs clutch kit is fairly popular and probably makes sense if you like how the car feels and drives. You might consider AOS replacement while it's accessible. There's a lot of information in various thread about the AOS, and (surprise) many conflicting opinions. Given the recent discussion regarding the dubious quality of brand-new AOS's, you'll definitely want to read up on this. It's not a very expensive part, but the AOS is in a difficult-to-access spot on the transmission side of the engine. As a stand-alone repair, a shop will probably charge several hours of labor for an AOS replacement. Bundled in with IMSB and RMS, I'd expect maybe an additional hour of labor. (Sorry for the duplication ... for some reason, this post took a long time to get posted) As a former 944 owner, you may not be shocked to hear the water pump mentioned as a wear item. Again, that's something to read up on and think about depending on the age and service history of the car.

You're talking about South Shore Autoworks. I found them because LN Engineering recommended them, and calling around to other shops had a few also say I should take my car to South Shore. My 01 C4 is there now. With tax it's $2550 for IMS, RMS, and clutch. After some tests we decided to do the cam pads, plugs, coils, and a few other misc things in the interest of getting to a known place on my car that is currently at 105k miles. It's not a cheap week for me, but I've found their communication to be excellent and based on the amount of work being done the price is fair.

POST 7Original post

I'm also in Boston, which shop did the IMS and RMS for $1,850 in 2017?

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 19606472

www.southshoreautoworks.com Thats what the IMS and RMS cost me in 2017, but I added on some other things (clutch, cam chain pads and so others) and was $2550. Id bet its at least 1k more now if not double.

yup, just IMS and RMS (no clutch work), getting quotes between $$3,500 (direct oil fed IMS) to $5,200 (Ceramic bearing IMS) to $7,532 (LN IMS Solution). If prices start getting up to $10k might just let it be if it ever dies, just get a new engine for $15k. Currently no issues with mine, 78,000 miles 1999 dual bearing, just thinking preventive maintenance...

POST 10Original post

To the OP, is your car an early dual row bearing? do you need a clutch or do you have an oil leak from the RMS? i would be tempted to leave well alone if you have dual row, or at least if you do an oil change then get the oil sent of to blackstone or similar for analysis, and or open the filter to see if you have any debris. honestly depending on your answers to the above questions i would be very tempted to wait and budget for an ultimate AOS aka the UAOS ...

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19606571

mine is a 1999 so I believe that year was the dual row row (any way to find out without opening it up), it's a Tiptronic so no clutch to replace. There is oil under the car from when I bought it, looks wet, but no oil leak on the floor in my garage. just had the spark plugs, tubes and coils replaced. Doing the oil and filter myself this week, will look in the filter and send the oil out for analysis. is the UAOS something I could do myself? Can the engine stay in? thanks, lucas

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 19606603

See what your engine number is.. physically look at the engine up on a lift as you don't know if its original write it down once you get it, it should be an M96.01...if it says AT in front of the number then its a factory reman.. but take a picture and decipher it...... as its useful to know for future reference.. wet engine is pretty much a given, as even porsche couldn't completely cure the RMS from leaking.. and the leak could be from anywhere, as far as could you change the UAOS not sure do some reading on here, the regular AOS is apparently very difficult to do with the engine in place for the professionals to do... so i wouldn't tackle it myself but i got older bones...

$7500 for an LN IMS Solution? Wow ... Isn't there a 996 short block from Porsche for $8,000 ?

Hey who cares as long that money is spent on the dreaded IMS $7.5k is making someone $$$$ and the owner less fearful and ready to spend on the next items Vendors have laid out to remove further fear on the 996

POST 16Original post

Quotes source posts: 19607900, 19607724

Got take into account that with Tiptronic cars most shops remove the entire engine and transmission to do the job unlike manual cars that clutch/IMS/RMS can be done with the engine insitu. And, with the engine out of the car, it would be crazy not to do other known wear items.
