When I installed my Dension, I broke the male connector that used to connect to my PCM and used one of the extra male connectors that came with the Dension after cleaning the wires a bit; now I never get the error.

Suneet - I'm having my Dension installed tomorrow and intended on having it located behind the PCM as you have done.

I really didn't want to do any splicing and soldering to power wires behind the headunit and I knew of a good chassis ground by the fuse box so I ran the power and ground cables to the fuse box and used a fuse tap onto the cd\changer, Bose amp fuse that is always on.

Since I unplugged the Dension unit and plugged it back into power yesterday (hard reset) it has worked every time.
i installed the gatway 500
i have PCM, nav dvd, phone GSM,, bose, and CD changer.
i connect the gateway 500 with CD changer (before cd changer). i tapped for power through the bose amplifier.
my problem is this, the phone does not work and some times the navigation. every thing works fine if i restart the MOST ring (i dont know how to do it exactly  ). after i turn off the car and then drive it for the next time i find it as i described (phone not working, nav somtimes not working)
PCM says "internal phone not available"
firmware of gatway 500 is v 1.0 (i did not install the newer version because it is buggy as described in the forum)
my ipod is mini
setting in gateway500 is:
Text on, Cache on, Paging on, Select on.
any help would be appreciated
thanks
faisal, welcome to the club! I'm not smart enough about the electronic things to help you but I'm sure some other members are. Please post some photos of your Cayman from there. I used to visit often on business and miss going there.
I've read about this issue on ********, when you have all those devices, the dealer needs to program their correct order\priority in PIWIS for them to all work seemlessly.
- Suneet
It's also possible, but less likely that you have a kink in the fiber somewhere.
Anyways, the thread on ******** is like 20 pages long and I can't find the exact post on the issue, but Eric from Bumperplugs posted this:
"Secondly, for those of you who had a cd changer, and installed the unit youselves, and found the unit to be working, but still not as fast as you'd like...
Once the unit is installed, it is likely to work much better if you reprogram the system using the Porsche system tester, to re-identify where each component is. For example, if the cd changer is at point #5 on the loop, and the Dension ends up at point #2 or point #7, it will still work (Dension) once the cdc is off the loop. BUT the functionality has been significantly improved on installs when we hooked the system tester to the vehicle and reprogrammed everything."
When I first got my PCM unit, sometimes I would fire up and get a Amplifier not available error. When I installed my Dension, I broke the male connector that used to connect to my PCM and used one of the extra male connectors that came with the Dension after cleaning the wires a bit; now I never get the error. This could mean that 1) I had dirt or a kink in the old fiber connection, or 2) Since my PCM was a second hand unit, it came out of a car with a cd changer and was programmed to look for the amplifier in a different priority location, and installing the Dension took care of that problem.

santa fe thanks for your welcome. i will post photos of my cayman soon.
suneet thanks for your reply and suggestion , i will check my wires and fiber connection.
Glad to hear I am not alone.
For the first week the unit worked flawlessly now. Now about 50% of the time that I start my car the Navigation doesn't work, it can't find it on the ring. I turn the car off and back on and it is a crapshoot as to whether things work or not. Today for the first time the Nav quit working while I was driving and of course the Dension unit went away as well, as if the power were cut to the Dension unit. I pulled up in the driveway and opened the hood and looked at the ipod. It was as if the Dension unit was rebooting itself continually or something as the display on the ipod kept changing. I pulled the power wire to the Dension 500 unit and plugged it back in (hard reset to the Dension unit) and then it worked fine, ipod showed the screen it should, Nav and Dension worked in the car.
Obviously "something" still isn't quite right with these units yet...
for what its worth...
i have no trouble at all since updating my navtv unit to its newest version as of Feb 2007...and i also have XM installed as well!
Ken,
are there times where the Dension works fine and the navigation doesn't work?
Is the unit hooked up before or after the nav in the loop? Per the Porsche supplement I uploaded, they say you should hook it up after the PCM but before the cd changer (and I'm assuming before any other components).
"In all other compatible Porsche models with optical MOST BUS (Boxster, Cayman and 911), the
GATEWAY 500 interface must be integrated into the optical ring after the PCM / CDR unit and in front of
the CD changer, like shown in pic. 1, page 2 in the English installation guide (DENSION
The pictures 4b and 5 on page 3 might raise the impression, the GATEWAY 500 interface is meant to be
installed into the optical line-out cable after the CD-changer. This is not valid for Porsche systems; please
ignore picture 4b and 5 on p. 3 regarding the optical ring direction."
I would also double check the power connection and make sure its stable and a constant 12v...
- Suneet
Suneet - I'm having my Dension installed tomorrow and intended on having it located behind the PCM as you have done. Should I need to disconnect power to the Dension, is it possible to do so from that location? Or am I better off installing it in another location?
Suneet i have no cd changer and viewing my article should show where in the ring it is, never an instance of dension working but nav not. i concur going to double check power supply soldering job.
Midnight,
Depends on how your installer powers the Dension. I really didn't want to do any splicing and soldering to power wires behind the headunit and I knew of a good chassis ground by the fuse box so I ran the power and ground cables to the fuse box and used a fuse tap onto the cd\changer, Bose amp fuse that is always on. So I can just disconnect the power by removing the fuse or fuse tap.
Actually now that I think about it, even if your installer solders the wires onto the headunit, you can always just reset the power by taking the fuse out...
but the interface isn't physically accessible in my location unless you remove the headunit, but you don't really need it for anything.
- Suneet
Kman S, I see from the article that it's installed before the nav drive but I can't tell if there are other components connected after the headunit before the Dension.
I think the solution for you and faisal will probably be dealer programming so that you can get the MOST ring prioritized correctly.
Oh by the way, Reeves finally got my Sports Chrono code, I will be making a trip to Tampa later this month to get it programmed.
- Suneet
I know you got your sport chrono code because I got Porsche to release them.
I have mine as well, doing it on Monday. There is nothing else between the head unit and the Nav. I think the issue is power, I talked to Mike and he said the power must always be on, and I think the CD changer power tap is not always on.
K-man S, the green\brown wire on the cd changer plug you tapped is 12v always-on, it's the wire most people on ******** are using too without problems. It's the red\white wire that isn't constant.
Thanks for getting Porsche to release the code
- Suneet
Yes I double-checked the power connections today and they were solid, we left a tester on the wires for an hour while the car sat and the voltage was a constant 12.41
Since I unplugged the Dension unit and plugged it back into power yesterday (hard reset) it has worked every time. Maybe that was all it needed.
today was the first time i try to enable the cd changer and desable the dension unit (through mode selector)
what happen was strange, it did not desable the dension unit (continue to play the music from the dension unit).
i have read once (not sure where) that the most ring in porsche has a maximum no. of 5 equipment .
i have, 1.pcm, 2.bose, 3.nav, 4.cd changer, 5.GSM.
so in my situation i think there is priorety in most ring. (with lowest priority to the phone).
i experemented (before my final install) by connecting the unit with the amplifier, and the phone was down.
i thought today since the mode selector is not doing any thing, just desconnect the cd changer and connect the dension immediatly to the ring.
first it said no cd changer.
after a reset, every thing worked fine.
so what do you think?
p.s. i am theorizing here
Mode selector changes aren't valid until the BUS is reset, this means, disable the Dension, get out of the car, lock it, wait a few minutes, unlock it and then put the key in, then your Dension will go into bypass.
Faisal, in your case, I think the Dension should be plugged in before the cd changer, and then have the dealer code it all. I doubt you will have access to cd changer and Dension at the same time though, you'll have to make use of that bypass switch if you want to listen to the changer. Or, if you're ok without the cd changer, I say take out the cd changer and ebay it
those things make good money.
