I fitted the boxes - which is a pretty straightforward job.

Don't despair, Ocean/Savannah is a popular choice for an epic car in a very exclusive marque - so take heart in that - I'd worry more about keeping it clean, OB shows every spec of dirt, a s*d to keep clean, worse than black IMHO

I will need to get my front discs/pads changed soon as the latter are pitted on the edge, also both exhaust boxes need replacing as they have corroded seams (but not blowing yet).

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I doubt any repair bills will exceed this number, so financially you are better off keeping it, even if it does need the odd repair job here and there.

I had thought about changing the car for a younger model, but the cost to change, for something sensible, would be more than the cost of a new engine from Autofarm, so as I've had 2 years and 10,000 miles problem free motoring I'm happy to keep the old girl (I hope I don't live to regret it).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All
I will need to get my front discs/pads changed soon as the latter are pitted on the edge, also both exhaust boxes need replacing as they have corroded seams (but not blowing yet).
Can anyone recommend an 'Indy' near Ely, Cambridgeshire to do the work. Also, are any of the specialist exhaust boxes any better sound/power wise that the OEM product (I won't have warranty issues, from this June, the Porsche warranty expires and the car is now too old for it to be renewed)?
I had thought about changing the car for a younger model, but the cost to change, for something sensible, would be more than the cost of a new engine from Autofarm, so as I've had 2 years and 10,000 miles problem free motoring I'm happy to keep the old girl (I hope I don't live to regret it).
On this last point I'd also welcome views. The cars a 98 C2 Cab Ocean/Savannah, 70k, reasonable spec and in good nick mechanically/bodywise and a full OPC history. If I had the option I'd fork out another £895 for the peace of mind, but I can't as she is over the age limit. The other side of the coin is that in two years nothing has gone wrong. What would you do, stick or sell and if the latter what would you buy?
Thanks all, soz for the long post.
hello.
boxes - mine are in the same state. I aint paying OEM prices (£850 excl vat and fitting). You might want to consider the Oettle ones on ebay, which have been modified so they are like the PSE (if you want the xtra noise that is)
discs/pads - i bought textar/brembo stuff and got it done by an indy. Again, didnt want to pay OPC prices.
warranty/new car - trading up to a younger car is going to cost you a lot of cash. So think about it this way: add the cash that you save by keeping your car (which you have taken care of and enjoy) to the cash you save by not paying for a warranty. I doubt any repair bills will exceed this number, so financially you are better off keeping it, even if it does need the odd repair job here and there.
Maybe get it serviced by OPC before the warrant expires and convince them to be super thorough so that everything that can be fixed under warranty gets done.

I have a pair of the Designtek silencers fitted to my 99 C4 and only live down the road at Hilton nr Huntingdon. So if you want to check out what they sound like - we could meet up.
Bill
I went for some Agency Power rear boxes - good value at the moment due to the US exchange rate and really impressed with them so far. I take my car across to Huntingdon a lot as well so happy to also let you have a listen.
Wagonface
- thanks for the comments, helpful and adds a new perspective that I hadn't thought about. Looked at the Oettle boxes. I like the fact that they are OEM before the convertion, hopefull not too much use before the extra pipe is welded on! Ironically a breaker in the UK, quoted me more for standard boxes from a write off.
Chauch
- thanks for the input and offer, Agency power quote $854.99 did you have to pay the dreaded VAT and import duty on top of this? They claim a weight saving of 15lbs and increased power by 10bhp at the wheels does that feel right? Who did you get to fit them?
Bill
- thanks, reply appreciated, Design Tech quote £595 and are not too far away based in Iford. They also claim 8-10 bhp and say the boxes have a mirror finish - that would stand out on the underside of my car. Did they fit as well as supply them for you or did you get them fitted by someone else?
Has any other forum member purchased the Oettle boxes?
Thanks for all the help. I get great advise from OPC Cambridge and compared with some comments regarding other OPC's on this forum their prices seem reasonable, but it's good to get alternative things to look at.
I managed to avoid any taxes as I found a set in Europe already, but a "warranty replacement" usually avoids the hit
Mine certainly feels more responsive and certainly much smoother at idle, albeit I am not sure the originals had not started blowing so maybe not a fair comparison.
I found the sound levels are perfect, not droney at all. I got Auto 2000 in Bedford to fit them for me - about £140 including new brackets from memory.
Geehils, i've got the oettle back boxes, nice sound, not too loud except up at higher revs so ok for motorway cruising (I've got a cab) but sound better than stock boxes with some low down rumble and a bit of a howl higher up. I've also got thee K&N induction kit which gives a noce roar up at around 5000 revs so the oettle boxes add to that nicely.
If you're looking for noise alone at £300 these are great, if you want some extra power too then your other options are the ones.
My car is a '98 C2 Ocean and Savannah too. Oh lordy a dead common car and I'm in the same boat as well to a degree! Spoooooky!!
Finding myself in this exact position all answers will be really appreciated!!! I'll probably ask more questions as well .................... But you guys are great!! Who said a few fair words didn't get you anywhere??!!?? Lol
Ok ... Brakes. I'm tempted to get my local mechanic (friend too) to do this as he is equally as good if not FAR better than an OPC, Indy. Honest. Plus Oil change whilst he is at it!
I know one of you guys changed all 4 Discs and pads and gave a how to on the job.
He is a top Guy who I have great faith in! So that's almost a no brainier!
Exhaust. Richard Hamilton. PCGB. A forum guru and Moderator recommended.

I think I am off to see him. I prefer a recommendation from someone over than glossy brochures/web sites! I am only looking for better sound mainly!! Now is that sad? I just think the 996 needs that engine note unleashed!
Cost. I recall £300--ish
My car has been a pleasure. Sadly I bought high and now 996 prices have plummeted. C'est la Vie, etc............................
I too toyed with the idea of selling. I want a 996 Targa. Saw one whilst browsing the net but to view properly had to enter my car details, etc, and so on. SUNDAY NIGHT!! At 5.30pm I am packing a bag for a brief stay in hospital so not in the best of frames of mind obviously! The guy from the garage then chooses to phone. I explain I am off to hospital so it's not a great time to chat. He then says I must have some idea as to what I want for the car. I AGAIN POLITELY SAY I AM OFF TO HOSPITAL. IT IS 5.30 ON A SUNDAY NIGHT! He then comes back with well you know it's only worth £14,500 in the trade. I managed to politely end the conversation!!!
Is it only worth that folks?
My warranty has run out and I'm sorely tempted to pop up to Hartech and go down this route,
Any thoughts anyone? Is t worth it? Is it worth risking not doing it as in not having a warranty?
http://www.hartech.org/lifeplan.html
FINALLY!! After doing all to put the car 'right" I'm off to see Chris Franklin.
http://www.centergravity.co.uk/
This is supposed to be the best way of getting your car really properly set up. I've read lots of posts about him and his work. Luckily he is just down the road for me but people have driven the length of the country to see him reading some posts!
I might actually drive it then! If I can afford some petrol!
Thanks for the replies in advance!
Hi David
Don't despair, Ocean/Savannah is a popular choice for an epic car in a very exclusive marque - so take heart in that - I'd worry more about keeping it clean, OB shows every spec of dirt, a s*d to keep clean, worse than black IMHO
Thanks for all the info, very helpful.
Hartech appear to have a good reputation, but if I understand their offering correctly, I struggle a bit with how a single service to get you in their system, enables them to underwrite a major engine catastrophe. But then I also struggle to understand what the odds are with this. I'd also struggle to get there as they are, unfortunately, 200+ miles from where I live! Given the OPC warranty is £895 and covers cars up to 9 years/120,000 miles surely that would indicate it's only a very small proportion that fail, otherwise I'd have thought the premium would be sky high or not available at all after say 4 or 5 years.
Re the value of your car, it's all on condition but I'd have thought that sort of level was just pitched to see how keen you were to get shot.
Hope all that hospital stuff is way behind you and now a distant memory.
Does anyone know if the 996 GT3 exhaust boxes are the same as in the basic C2 996?
Regards
Geehils
Hi,
Can't comment on the Exhaust, but can help re Hartech.
They looked after my old 996 cab before it was totalled.
Initial inspection and service (no matter when done by OPC), plus fixing anything they say.
Then, £70 ish per month for 2 services a year (less for one), including MOT. ANY breakages (including wear and tear stuff) fixed for free (within their warranty) you jusy buy the parts.
In my experience a good bunch of lads, they'll give it to you straight, (told me I was being a bit of a girl on the brakes!!!), and very ***** regarding Porsches.
Bit of a drive for you though.
Bit of a drive true! But they have a deal with a local car hire firm to rent a car for £15 a day!
Thing is I struggle to work out ... total engine failure catastrophe tooooo!!as all my other cars have been been ok and never just blown up!
I know I'll regret saying that!
Am I just being paranoid over it being a "Porsche", "supercar"!!??!!
For Brakes and Exhaust bits give the Porscheshop Website a checkout @
http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/
They are also very obliging at doing stuff while you wait.
