Does anyone know if when the next version of pcm is released, could be retrofit into our Caymans? Can you retrofit a pcm 2.1 system into a boxster that could have had an older version of pcm?
Smounic,
I'll try to answer this the best I can from what I know from reading around renntech.
PCM 2.0 and 2.1 were designed around the MOST bus, while the original Boxster\996 (before MY04) PCM did not use the MOST bus. That made it so the new systems could not be retrofitted into the old cars. Amplifier designs and wiring changed as well.
A few things need to happen if to make PCM 3 backwards compatible to our cars.
1) Porsche has to stick with the MOST fiber bus system, so that we can still retain the use of the MOST fiber speed sensor for Nav, MOST fiber dvd drive, cd changer, dash display, etc. There is a good chance of this...
2) Software must be written for the PCM3 that will allow the use of the MOST Bose amplifier. There is a high chance that Porsche will no longer be using the Bose soundsystem after all the complaints of poor sound and that extensive survey Porsche put out asking customers want from high end sound systems. This means that PCM3 will be set to work with new, better amplifiers and why would Porsche go to the trouble of writing software for the PCM 3 to use the older amplifiers?
Now I imagine the PCM 3 will have analog outputs for the base sound system option, just like our PCM 2 does for the base and sound package plus, which means you can probably do some splicing and retrofit it. I highly doubt that the plugs will be the same, this is unheard of in Harman Becker revisions of headunits and will be even less probable if they get a new company to make the headunit. Also... there's a possibility they will change the nav drive, etc, and the older revisions won't be compatible.
Basically, backwards compatibility is contingent upon a whole lot and I wouldn't really bet on it. They're going to be shipping it with the Panamera from what the rumor mags say. It would be my guess is that if we see a PCM 2.2, it will work with our systems, but a 3.0... probably not, it'll be a complete overhaul.
