Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's seems like it's getting worse. Same on both sides. Anyone know what is hitting or rubbing on the top to cause this?

POST 2Original post

A picture would help to understand where the top is being damaged, and what the possible cause could be.

POST 4Original post

Ya, I've got a little of that also, not as bad as yours though. Something in the frame work of our tops is binding/not folding in correctly thus abrading the top material. I was going to bring mine to a good convertible top shop familiar with 996 tops and see what they say. Did you ever find out what your engine knocking noise was...?

shoot forgot to update that. Muffler needed adjustment it was a little loose. Dodged that bullet.

POST 6Original post

You have a pretty big glass window and that could be part of it. My replacement top is plastic window, it folds in half probably about 5-6 inches lower than where those marks are on yours. I don't have any marks like that and I put my top up and down a lot. So I bet the glass window puts a different stress on the top. Maybe someone who also has a glass window has insights.

POST 7Original post

Have a cabrio as well. Some odd wear marks here and there but it is 20 years old now. Holding up great all things being considered. I have noticed some differences with weather and temp. The metal expanding in heat and contracting in cold. Im sure there were some tolerances from the factory and as things age litttle stiff in the knees. Do you have fairly consistent weather?

interesting. Im gonna watch closely when i retract the top.

POST 10Original post

Mine has similar marks. I just chalk it up to 20+ years of use.

POST 11Original post

Check the voltage isnt sagging at high rpm either. Could be limiting fuel or spark.

POST 12Original post

I have an ‘02 Cab with similar wear marks. My belief is that the elastic straps, with Velcro attachment of the headliner or convertible top, have worn out and are preventing the top from closing correctly. I have seen posts where the elastic straps were replaced. I don’t know if that fixed the wear problem.
