The plugs from the new style airbags will need to be used but can be tied in a circuit together to fire both charges simultaneously.
Leading evidence: 'Use but can be tied in a circuit together' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill gap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Even with the spring it would probably have a small gap, but I'm thinking of making a fairing of some sort to fill the gap.

Our first order of business has been replacing all of the mentioned parts with replacements more fitting to the experience we were after.

I want to use a 992.1 SW and understand that the 991 air bag is a fit, even though it is just slughtly different.

Fortunately, in various posts on the subject, I saw references to an adapter used on old VW and Audi cars that some said *might* work but I never saw any part numbers, links or even definitive evidence that it would actually work in practice.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

BLUF: Yes, you can cheaply retrofit a 997 or 991 wheel onto a 996, at least on a manual car for about $53 USD. Airbag conversion TBD. Parts listed below.
I recently bought a modified 1999 C2 with a manual transmission for my wife to replace her s2000. We got a great deal and I think partially due to the fact that a lot of the interior had a lot of cheap "upgrades" that would push a lot of buyers away including crap sparco seats, harnesses, and cheap NRG steering wheel/quick release. Our first order of business has been replacing all of the mentioned parts with replacements more fitting to the experience we were after. For the wheel I considered moving to a Porsche classic wheel or standard momo equivalent but I am a bigger fan of the OEM+ type of experience. So I looked into installing a 997 or 991 wheel. I was able to find a banger deal on this reconditioned 997 standard wheel and airbag for 180 bucks shipped from a member here on the forum. I would have prefere a 991 wheel, but wheel and airbag together are about 5x the cost.
With that said, I thought, what's the worst that could happen if I try? Maybe I lose the cost of any conversion parts I order.
For those that don't know, 996 and older have ~17mm steering column spline and 997+ have ~26mm spline. I was curious if there were any options to adapt them together. From my research a lot of other people in the past have asked if it was possible but most responses were "no" or "only with the spacershop adapter that adds about 50mm of depth and costs 400 bucks on top of the price of the wheel. i couldnt find any solid answer, just a lot of "maybes". Fortunately, in various posts on the subject, I saw references to an adapter used on old VW and Audi cars that some said *might* work but I never saw any part numbers, links or even definitive evidence that it would actually work in practice. So after some digging I found this adapter that looked like it *should* work.

A few days ago, it came in and it was a perfect match for the splines On both the wheel and steering column.
FITMENT: The splines on the adapter are a perfect match, but the adapter itself sits probably 5mm or so too deep on the column so the threads for the nut don't go far enough to clamp. Luckily it was an easy fix and I was able to find a thick stainless washer from my local hardware store with the outer diameter to sit flush to the mounting point on the 997 wheel without any interference and an inner diameter that matches the column. It only cost about $3.
After tightening everything down, the wheel looks and feels fantastic.
I still have more to go on this project regarding the wiring side, but for now, I'm happy with the result. I want to get the horn button and airbag working eventually, but considering that my old wheel was a quick release, I didnt have an airbag to begin with. For now, I removed the clock spring so I can examine the wiring to choose a route forward. The only thing visually that looks out of place is a small gap where the clock spring would have gone. Even with the spring it would probably have a small gap, but I'm thinking of making a fairing of some sort to fill the gap.
More to come.
I just I have some photos of the adapter on the column and of the spacer/washer I used.
It's very simple from the mechanical side. Once the old wheel is off, adapter goes on column, then wheel on adapter, then washer/spacer, then original nut and washer.
Were you able to get the airbag connected satisfactorily? Did you attempt to install a 997+ clock spring or are you thinking of adapting the 996 clock spring?
I am exploring this project for a 993, which has the same spines, clock spring and single stage airbag as the 996.
I read an
article
in Excellence magazine that says the 987 has a single stage airbag but I havent found any different parts pertaining that.
Below are pictures of the 2 stage airbag connectors vs the single stage airbag connector.
Did you make any more progress on the airbag alternations needed - I'm considering a 997 steering wheel in a 996 and there is very little info available on it - presumably because no one has really tried to do that maybe?
Has anyone figured the airbag out yet? I tried searching everywhere. On the BMW forums from single to dual stage, some say it just means only one stage will fire if you connect it in only one area. Not sure if that applies here as well.
I believe that the airbag is a single stage thru the 991.1. If so it should be a simple connection. I want to use a 992.1 SW and understand that the 991 air bag is a fit, even though it is just slughtly different. What I dont understand is the clockspring problem. The 996 clockspring is larger than the 991/992. Is a 997 clockspring the duze of the 996 or 991? I also understand that my undrrdtanding us limited and I msg be totally uninformed.
In short, I have the VW adapter and the SW But dont have the knowledge. Any help would be appreciated. For example, is there an issue mounting the wheel without the clockspring? Thanks for clarification.
I used the 996 clock spring and removed the top half facing you once in place. It will work fine but I've been talking with someone on Facebook and he is 3D printing a part that will cover the top of the 996 clock spring, more like factory. It's not needed....but I think it will be better. I bought a spare 986 clock spring to fiddle with.
I'm not sure about the 992 airbags being single stage but I would imagine they are dual stage. Everything I've read indicates that the stage 1 is like a 30% charge for low impacts and the stage 2 is about a70% charge which fires with the low stage for a 100% charge on higher impacts.
Single stage airbags are obviously fired 100%, high or low speed. The wiring is pretty easy, the dual stage have two separate loops, low and high, but our 996's only have one firing loop and one connector. The plugs from the new style airbags will need to be used but can be tied in a circuit together to fire both charges simultaneously. At least that's what I'm doing in the 996.
And yeah, I still need a permanent wheel for my 996.
The 996 was the last 911 to use the single stage airbag. I am not sure what the difference would be for using a more modern bag as a single stage inflation.

Hi, any advance on the solution of the airbag problem? I am buying a 992 sterring wheel and will try to install it but I would love some advice on how to make the horn and the airbag work.
