It seems to me the issue is "getting info/answers to questions about our cars." If that's what you want, read the manuals/FAQ's, etc.

I'll probably now get accused of hijacking this thread, but I'm afraid to start a new one because maybe this has been discussed before and I don't know how to use the search function well enough to find it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Anyone know? The button that acts as a mute button.

POST 2Original post

Oh someone is going to ask you to read the owners manual but before that happens I will enter my guess as "traffic program"

POST 3Original post

Didn't get too far into the radio manual eh - its on page 2.

POST 4Original post

Doh. I suck at asking questiosns. From now on I'm just going to post pictures of my car and tell people their pictures look good.

POST 5Original post

Nah, it is good advertising for the ole manual...

POST 6Original post

hawc, No one is saying that you suck at asking questions, but what I think people are trying to politely tell you is that many of your questions can be easily answered by reading your owners manual or other common resource like the FAQ on this website, etc. That doesn't mean we don't want you to ask questions, we do. In fact there is nothing wrong with asking the question in this manner: "Hey I am at work today and my car is in the parking garage so I don't have access to the owner's manual at the moment, but I noticed on the way into work that one of the radio buttons has TP on it, anyone know what that stands for?" In that scenario you are stating that you don't have access to other sources of information, can a member help you out, and surely one will. Otherwise, some of the questions start to come off as the "Nth" time you've asked about something that can be found in the owner's manual are you just not willing to go to your glove box and get it, etc. A forum is a place to ask questions and there is always that old addage about if you give someone a fish they eat for a day, but if you teach them to fish they eat for a lifetime. I suggest that some of our members here are simply trying to teach you to fish. Who knows, by reading the owners manual you might find other good bits of information and commit them to memory and the next time some other member asks something you can chime in with the answer and/or help teach them to fish. BTW, I truly have forgotten what TP stands for, and I'm at work at the moment or I would go look at my manual to see as well, but I think it is for traffic program so that was my guess. Obviously, you and I now both know where to go find the answer thanks to Santa Fe.

POST 7Original post

Touche des messages d'informations routieres (TP) or Traffic Radio Button (TP) so where does TP come from?

POST 8Original post

I always thought TP stood for toilet paper.

POST 9Original post

It does stand for "traffic program" and in countries where this exists in the communications infrastructure, traffic information is broadcast to that frequency. In some places, the system can tell where you are and traffic information and warnings can be sent to you based on your location. You can also set it to interrupt your regular radio/CD programming that you're listening to, when something particularly important or certain warnings (like Sigalerts) are broadcast. My BMW 5-series wagon has this, too. brad

POST 10Original post

I know that it is forum policy and standard internet practice to look in FAQs and do a search but I really question the need for this. I don't expect it to change but it does make this and other sites of less interest to me. I don't post a lot beacuse I'm afraid of being criticized for not doing all my research beforehand. As far as I know we're not running out of space on the internet. A few duplicate threads aren't going to hurt anything. Not complaining, just constructive criticism. This is still the best forum I've found on the net.

POST 11Original post

Agree with your constructive criticism. The only stupid question is the one you are afraid to ask. CC gives awards for high post count and has members who feel obliged to post in every thread, often with one or two word replies like "Agree" or "Good Post" that add zero. There should be no guilt in asking any question, then someone interested in boosting their post count could politely answer with something like, "Per the owners audio manual page 2, TP means traffic program". This might nudge the OP to check the manual next time and gives the site a more friendly feel. The only time I have read the owner's manual was to set up homelink .

POST 13Original post

Beez: I guess I just don't agree with you on this one. I will now refrain from posting new threads for fear of asking the same question that someone else has asked in the past. Rules like this just make this site and forums like this in general a less friendly place. If I'm alone in this that is fine. Maybe forums are just not the place for me. I'll probably now get accused of hijacking this thread, but I'm afraid to start a new one because maybe this has been discussed before and I don't know how to use the search function well enough to find it.

POST 14Original post

Sorry to hijack this thread. I promise to be good from now on. Just don't expect a lot of posts.

POST 15Original post

Well, heck, I apologize for continuing the hijack... but, jgriff - That's ok - we can agree to disagree... but I think you're being a little too paranoid about this - when we do ask people to search, we do it politely and even provide a link that's a starting point. I think you should feel free to ask questions without fear of reprisal. Feel free to send me a PM if you want to talk further so we don't hijack this thread forever. brad

POST 16Original post

It seems to me the issue is "getting info/answers to questions about our cars." If that's what you want, read the manuals/FAQ's, etc. If, on the other hand, you just want to converse with strangers, ask your question without doing any research. I don't understand why people ask questions, get directed to research material, then feel "abused".

POST 17Original post

This will be my last post resonding to this... This is what I'm talking about. How about just saying "It's on page 2 in the owner manual." instead? The hijacking thread graphic from Beez is a little ridiculous also. I was not the one who changed the topic. People started talking about doing research before I chimed in. I only bring this up because I was so happy to find a forum on the internet where people don't judge you for not knowing things or asking obvious questions. The only thing you'll accomplish by treating people like they are asking stupid questions is to drive them away. That's why we are all here instead of the other forums, because people are polite and friendly here. I would have brought this up in person but I hadn't seen anything on the site like this at the time.

POST 18Original post

Everyone go to your neutral corners and wait for further instructions... Could this have digressed any further from the original thread? Perhaps this needs to be a new topic... please wait why I do a search... LOL All kidding aside, valid points have been made by both sides. I have done searches on common topics and gotten so many returns that I get pissed that no one else tried to do a search first and now there are all these threads that I have to skim through to find the information that I'm looking for. This is why I agree with Beez and K-man S. It can be daunting. But jgriff brings up a good point that this is a civilized forum and respect should be first priority. I think it just needs to be left that sometimes we should agree to disagree and drop it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is what makes this site great. Jgriff I hope you don't feel the need to not post because of fear of reprisal, your statement that this is the best forum on the net is 100% correct.

POST 19Original post

Man, someone please put this thread out of its misery. :argue:

POST 20Original post

Man, easy guys...this is somewhat ridiculous. Here you go: That's how you hijack a thread

POST 21Original post

You have to have a sense of context hear. The OP and I have had a bit of fun with each other the past few days about searching previous to this post so this was a continued theme. If you don't have a bit of humor about things like this it isn't worth it to contribute. I find stretching things out of context and jumping to conclusions to be treating people poorly as well. Spend some quality time here and you will find that the preceived insults are in the mind of the beholder.

POST 22Original post

Nicely done on the hijack, rep points to follow.

POST 23Original post

She's kinda manish looking. Big broad shoulders. Hmmmm....

POST 24Original post

LOL. How dare you say Ms. Biel is "manish" looking! OK guys... BAN HAWC!

POST 25Original post

[Image-only or quote-only post; no author-written text.]

POST 26Original post

lol Silent Will I find it funny that you often post pictures of hot women while at work.

POST 27Original post

I'm sat at home with my feet up on the couch hanging out with all you clowns and looking for houses in Colorado

POST 30Original post

Ok, no mas... this thread has gotten WAY out of hand, and has been hijacked three times now, including once by yours truly... so, since the question from the OP has been answered, and nobody seems to even remember what it was anyway... plus I think most of the other subjects have run their course, I'm going to lock this thing down before it goes off on some other crazy tangent. If you feel that's a mistake, feel free to PM me or K-Man S to plea for its reopening... if you feel there's more to say on the "posting" subject that's been discussed, then feel free to star another thread in "Web site feedback." brad
