Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Guys, I'm planning a road trip to the alps this summer. I'm just curious; what things would you check before hading off to make sure the car is in great condition? I was thinking:
- Brake pads
- Fluid levels (oil, coolant, powersteering, brake, washer)
- Oil leakage on the underside
- AOS / crankcase vacuum
- Play on the wheels
.... anything else you'd add?
Check that your headlamps work right, you might need them
. Also make sure the fans work right and your oil pressure is steady before you leave.
I'd pack some tools. Basic wrenches / spanners, a multitool, OBD interface, some oil, microfiber cloth, etc.
Also, don't look at the oil level gauge when going through passes. You're almost never parked on level ground, so it'll read all over the place.
I would love to drive the the Alps. Its flat as a pancake here in the Midwest USA.
Check your service records on last time you replaced
1. Cooling tanks, hoses and water pump. If questionable with age, consider replacing. A leak will put you on the side of the road.
2. Power steering hoses, reservoir, pump, etc. Bring a bottle of power steering fluid with you if you spring a leak. If something breaks, you wont have to sit on the side of the road, but it will make a hell of a noise and will make the steering heavier.
3. Ignition switch failing can cause lots if problems
4. Headlight switch failing will give you no headlights
5. Oil pressure sending unit failing will show no pressure and gove you some nasty messages on your dash.
6. Bring your durametric or equavalent so you can troubleshoot.
7. Check your spare tire to make sure its in good shape and can be inflated. Consider bringing a large enough trash bag to put a rear tire in or a tire cover just in case you need to drive a few miles on the spare.
8. Map out where the Porsche dealers and indies are along your path as a just in case.
9. For sure, make sure you have a good set of all season tires.
If your car is in great shape amd has had proper service and parts replacement, you wont have any problems. It will end up being a great drive. Hope you post some pictures!
#1 ; check you Bank Account for plenty of Reserve Cash...
#2 :: have at least 2 Credit/Debit Cards so if one gets locked after business hours you still have access to $$$
#3 :: get a Tech Inspection Sheet for PCA HPDE preparations and follow the process. If it is a good enough process for Track Events, it is good enough for a Road Trip !!!
Tire air pressures. Get an accurate gauge and set it correct. Pressures are listed under the gas flap cover.
If your car has a spare, it is a space saver. Check to see that the air-pump works in the cig lighter or attached to battery. Don't forget the "Wheel nut Lock Key" and the post thing to help get the wheel off. Good idea on a bag, get one from a tire store.
Yes on smallish tool kit, plus Jesus Tape, some zip ties, disposable rubber gloves, maybe paper towels, etc. (Jesus Tape is " Final Assault, Jesus I hope this holds!) otherwise know as Duct Tape or Silver Tape.
Battery Tender and some sort of electric cord med-long. Pcars are notorious for using electric and car will actually use
LESS
electric if locked. Spare fuses.
Get Rain-X or something similar on windshield and headlights. It
almost
eliminates windshield wipers at speed and helps getting bug splatter off. Pracing started this 35-40 years ago on 935s.
Check brake pads, Alps are not flat like an Illinois pancake.
Maybe a small airline size pillow for left arm padding. Nice and not too big.
Other folks may have more thoughts....
YMMV
I usually have some spare parts, easy to change. 2 spark plugs, 1 ignition coil, some rubber for vacuum lines, crankshaft position sensor, some quick patch for tyre puncture, full set of pharmacy things such as band aids, pills, a booster, piwis on the laptop extra headlight bulbs...
Come out here in the West, visit Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Moab areas. It ain't flat.
Dealers and/or Indies very few and far between. Many not worth the effort.
Drive VERY DEFENSIVELY & ALERT. Big critters here, they are the boss, don't hit one. ((especially Buffalo and Moose)
Other than that, lots of "ordinary roads" have a zillion curves/ups/downs.
I came from IL, near zero mosquitos in the high mountains. I have never even seen one at my house, elevation 5700 feet. No humidity. Thin air, you get here I spoze it is "thicker". Lotsa bugs = lotsa birds = lotsa big fish. Pickup trucks everywhere.
YMMV
Thanks for all the tips guys, good stuff! I'll turn this into a small google doc that might serve the community and will update it as the thread progresses;

p.s. I live in the Netherlands, if it comes down to 'flatness', I think I'll win. Highest point of our country is 333m above sea level. We often joke about not having any mountains, but plenty of (head)wind
The alps is a 1.000km drive, well worth the effort. Done it a couple of times on a motorcycle, but would love to repeat (parts) of those trips by 996 with the family.
Either put on a new serpentine belt now, or carry a new one with you. Sound like you may be far away from sources. Nothing ends a trip like a broken belt.
Sounds great. Spent alot of time in MT and WY in the 90s driving around each state in rental cars. Incredible views. Never been to ID. But I hear great things! most of my long distance driving is from Chicago to phila and back. Lots of indies, lots of dealers. Great hills in PA.
Nothing better than a long distance road trip in the 996!

On "flattness", there is Death Valley near here, about Minus 360 feet, about -100 meters below sea level, and hotter than the Devil's Anvil.
Well, maybe my thoughts on GPS would work in your neck of the woods.
