Hi all, Merry Christmas
has anyone got any experience with the yellow engine mount on a
cayman
987? Not just the insert but the whole bush. The car is only used on the road so wanted to see what people’s thoughts are who have fitted one. Do they cause vibration, any noise? Etc
Thanks
Simon
I haven't done one on my
Cayman
, but various firmer engine mounts on other cars over the years has always transmitted a good bit of vibration to the cabin.
Not exactly the same but I have the FF insert + 996
GT3
Hard rubber Transmission mounts. You feel the stiffer bracing on the throttle, gain extra traction to the wheels. The trade off is that the engine rumbles into the cabin a little but I like it in my
987.1
. I am in the demographic that likes their car a little sharper, a little raw, a little more of that old school feel. I'm the type who doesn't turn on the stereo and just listen to the mechanical symphony - never gets boring
For a
987.2
, this config would be quieter than the
987.1
.
I have a FF orange insert in a new OEM motor mount and the FF orange transmission mounts. The transmission mounts make the biggest difference to the NVH especially tire road noise (RE71R's currently to use them up). But those two tranmission mounts also control the rear end better. Its a 3 pivot plot, with the main one being the engine mount. I started with a new engine mount and added the FF orange insert. Then a couple months later added the two orange transmission mounts.
I would suggest to go softest on the transmission mount. As to addicted2wasabi, not sure how the
987.1
Function First Orange transmission mount compares to the 996
GT3
Hard rubber mount. The 996 engine/transmission is turned around so I'm not sure you could even compared these two transmission mounts in a 987.1S. Does the install pad on the bottom of the mount fit the holes for the normal transmission mount?
I am satisfied with this setup for my cars intended use, but if you want to listen to music or have a quiet cabin, free of engine and road noise, I would not go this direction. The good news is this FF Orange mounting system really helps keep the engine/trans axle from moving around, especially in slalom road type driving.
I bought my "hard rubber mounts" about 7yrs ago from Carnewal. There's a picture on the website which also states there's less rubber. The received part number was 996 375 049 91 and I recall my indy had to grind 30+mm off the stud to install it.
Hard Rubber Motor Mounts - Carnewal
At the time, this was replacing the Wevo 3 piece system which had way to much NVH for me - like a race car with no sound proofing.
Configurations I've used
1. Wevo engine mount + Wevo transmission mounts -> too much NVH
2. OEM engine mount + Wevo Transmission mounts -> Less but still to much NVH
3. OEM Engine mount with FF Insert + Hard rubber transmission mount -> Still some NVH but liveable as I think this set up adds enough sound (NVH) to make it enjoyable. I'll try to upload a better driving clip but this vid might give you a sense of the sound from inside
I installed the Powerflex (octagonal shape) mounter mount bushing on my
986
. There is most certainly an increase in vibration at idle - somewhere between worrisome and slightly annoying.
