The suggestion of a trickle charger is a good one after you've changed the battery though.

I have a non-standard one in mine (replaced an original); car fired up straight away after 5 weeks of non-useage.

Suggestion
- You can use a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up (either via solar or via mains).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
Just new onto the site and wondered if anyone can help.
I've recently bought a 911(996)C4S and am having serious issues with the battery discharging.
Nearly everytime I leave the car for more than 2-3 days it's a pig to turn over, resulting in the click click noise we all know.
The battery is a original Porsche one and was replaced about 6 months ago as the receipts in the car confirm. Looking at it today the vent hose on the battery seems to be on the wrong side to connect to the actual vent hose on the car ! Could the battery be fitted the wrong way around and if so is it messing up my electrics and not recharging properly ! Would or should it even start the car ?
I'm at your mercy for advice but please don't tell me to go to the Porsche garage as it's 90 miles away and closed until Tuesday.
Cheers, Nigel.
Weak Batteries are known issues particularly with the 996. Even though the car turned off, battery drain will still occur (see 996' FAQ's).
- You can use a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up (either via solar or via mains).
- Sometimes it can point to the alternator, but as you say it occurs after staying inactive for a few days, indicates a likeness's on the battery.
If the battery is less then 1yr, then I presume you would still be covered under warranty. If you cant make it to them (OPC), give porsche assistance a shout and get them to start the car up.
If the diagnose the battery as the culprit, with you reciept im sure you could get them to change it over FOC there and then instead of going to OPC (never tried myself though).
I dont think the vent hose is relevant, Ive forget its purpose but it dont not influence battery drain AFAIK.
Cheers
ps- We have a great search feature here that will yeild alot of posts under "battery".
...and of course - Welcome! :bye:
Hi
I too would go for the battery. The suggestion of a trickle charger is a good one after you've changed the battery though.
Sorry but batteries dont last for ever
Regards Big Bob
Porsche standard batteries are cr@p even by (Chiswick) OPC's own admission. I have a non-standard one in mine (replaced an original); car fired up straight away after 5 weeks of non-useage.

loads of people on here have the CTEK 3600 which is great. I have the CTEK 7000 cos mine is parked on road, so I cant leave it plugged in permanently in my garage, so I want more power so I can charge for shorter times. (Porsche branded ones are CTEK 3600)

also - you can buy a connector plug that you can bolt to the bettery terminals and leave it on permanently, which is neat if you trickle alot (so to speak). And if your mains socket is miles from your car, you can buy extra wire and extra connectors from Maplin. I often have a cable running out of my letterbox and 10m down the pavement.

I use an Oxford Maximiser 360T

Its better than the optimate thing as it has a nice quick connector you can attach to the battery permanently and then its a simple plug in and out with out having to takethe battery cover off
