I have tried to search and not exactly sure what to call it. I’ve seen that the 987.2 and 981 engines use the same engine block.
Does this count for the 2.9 also?
I’ve only see one other person who asked about this on ********.
Maybe I am missing something, since I cannot find much info and I’m rather late to the game. The 3.8 engine swap would be a phenomenal game changer. But at a lot of cost.
Are we not able to have a 3.8 block and mount our 2.9 heads on it. Maybe with bigger valves, ported and polished with bigger injectors and a tube. Or even using the 3.4L crank with the 2.9 sleeved up more.
Not much in this at all, and I see I am not the first to ask. I do understand it would not get the same power output. But just seems that would be an easier option. Maybe I am wrong idk.
Anyone have any insight on this, or maybe the proper terminology for a search.
I tried to look into this a bit before and didn't find much. With the 987.2 both the 3.4 and 2.9 share the same stroke and the bore diameter makes up the displacement. These are closed deck blocks and from some of the pictures I saw of the 2.9 opened up it sure looks like plenty of room to go bigger. With that said I never opened a Porsche engine before but been intrigued with the 2.9 as you get them at a very reasonable price. Hopefully someone has some insight on the 2.9.
Yes pricing engines out the 2.9 and 2.0 from the 718 seem reasonably priced. I love boost, but I’m guess tackling putting the turbo engine in with the electronics would be a night mare. But I agree 2.9 seems like a good place to start from.
I need to look into and find more specs. Everything is so vague or maybe I do not know a lot of the proper terminology. But does seem possible to make this happen and keep the efi heads with valve work, bigger injectors and cam or cams. I need to research much more also. Hopefully someone has attempted this or did it as you said and can give us some feed back.
