FWIW, I inspect (with great anticipation) the OE-style filter (MAHLE) on a 2000 996 every time the oil and filter are replaced with new and fresh Mobil One.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Further, when the time comes for clutch number two, the owner will then replace the IMSbearing with the proven best one along with renewing the RMSeal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, went to change the oil and didn't have the right oil filter Oil Filter Wrench (duh) which I discovered after draining the oil. So, ordered the correct wrench (the one I had fit but wouldn't grab well enough so clearly not the exact one) which will be here in a few days.
My question: How much oil will I loose (put the new oil in without changing the filter) by jut removing the filter and replacing. I can capture the oil but want to know if I'll have a gusher on my hands, just a quart or two, or not much.
Thoughts?
No lack of prep can account for stupidity, I know.
Laughing at PCA7GGR and then JP's follow up. Yep, not a good idea unless I want to purchase a new canister.
Thank you Porscheag_101. If it's only 1/2 liter, I'll unscrew the canister and replace the filter without worrying about getting a couple quarts of oil all over the place. 1/2 a liter is manageable, 8 quarts is a bit more than I want to have to capture then refill.
Arguably, you "could" remove the filter, very carefully to avoid spilling the oil in it, remove the cartridge (with the canister still full) and replace with new cartridge, and loose no more than a few ml. Removing the filter cartridge is not like removing drain plug. The only oil you will get is what is in the filter, regardless if the engine is drained or not. You're likely aware of this, but seems lots are not. This is why it's easy to do a filter inspection without changing or draining the oil.
@JTT. Thank you.
I recognized that the filter sat higher than the drain plug and was hoping that I wouldn't lose a few quarts but wasn't sure. Have never really looked at engine oil lubrication schematics.
I don't mind about disposing of the oil in the filter canister, just didn't want to have a few quarts draining out. First time draining the oil on a 996.
@PCA7GGR: Yes, 82 911 would have been an option to just jam with a screw driver. No worries.
@inamini: I haven't read about the conversion so need to investigate. Porsche filters are way more expensive than they need to be however since it was my first time, went with OEM.
I installed the LN filter adapter/NAPA gold filter on my 99 996. Trying to give my motor a fighting chance with full flow oil capability. Have not changed the IMS bearing as i did not see any metal chips/filings in the filter element before I changed to the LN filter adapter. Something you may want to consider. I also had an early 911, sold it and bought this 996. I'm sure others will chime in regarding this filter issue.
My engine was replaced under warranty in 2006 (blown head - previous owner). The new engine is the redesigned engine that doesn't have the replaceable IMS bearing. So theoretically, I'm good on the IMS. Have not heard the newer engines to be a problem.
Then hear it now: The third generation oversized IMS bearings still fail, just not is as large numbers as the earlier bearings. This is exactly why Porsche gave up and designed the IMS out of the newer 9A1 engines.
I prefer the original equipment style cartridge within plastic housing so to make the cartridge's opening for inspection less challenging than having to hacksaw a spin-on filter housing open to examine the filter for metal particles, shavings, or bits. Plus, I'd guess hacking a metal housed filter might complicate the exam and leave the inspector wondering the origin of the metal he might find within - "Did it come from the filter housing OR the engine's insides?"
FWIW, I inspect (with great anticipation) the OE-style filter (MAHLE) on a 2000 996 every time the oil and filter are replaced with new and fresh Mobil One. The Carrera just turned 75,500 miles, owner is the third one, IMSbearing and RMSeal are original and the sportscar runs six DE track-days a year in addition to dry and saltless-road regular exercise throughout the year. We feel this thoroughbred has passed the death point and will run for many more years to come.
Further, when the time comes for clutch number two, the owner will then replace the IMSbearing with the proven best one along with renewing the RMSeal.

Only a butcher would "hacksaw" a spin oil filter, a technician would employ a filter cutting tool, which operates much like a can opener, leaving not one spec of metal filings:
So, job successfully completed with one exception (travel this week so couldn't get to it till today).
The new oil filter (from Porsche) looks different from the one I replaced (S. Korean). I have included a picture however it looks like the old one had a spring enabled bypass filter on it. Anyone know why this might be? Nervous that my engine requires a different type of filter cartridge than what was standard on a 996. My engine was replace in 2006 under warranty so upgraded engine with non-replaceable IMS bearing.
Any thoughts on this?
I think what has happened is the factory bypass had become dislodged (very common problem) from the bottom of the plastic housing and is stuck in the filter (photo below shows were it should be):
As you cannot buy a replacement bypass, but only an entire new housing, now would be a good time to consider switching to the LN spin on filter adaptor which uses much better filters.
@JFP: Thank you. You were correct that I was able to pull it out of the old filter.
@Forum: Any harm in just placing it in the new filter and running it that way or do I need a new housing? Definitely going to go with the LN (or other suggestions) adapter but want to know if I can run it with just putting the bypass in the old or am I risking oil filtration by doing that? Clearly it was running that way previously.
I have not opened up the filter (I'll be using a hacksaw) yet to inspect however the oil plug was clean and nothing in the outside of the filter.
More than likely, that bypass valve is toast, so reinstalling it may end up giving you 100% bypass, which equals no filtration. Porsche only sells the assembled housing, so unless you can find a used unit, now would be the time to switch to the spin on.
@JFP: I was hoping you wouldn't say that.
OK. Can I chose any filter then or do I have to order the LN filter? If I read the product description correctly, I can use any filter once I have installed the adapter.
I'm sure there are a lot of recommendations. My instinct tells me to go with the Bosch or Mann however is the NAPA one worth the extra money?
You can use any quality filter of the correct size, such as the Wix/NAPA Gold 1042, which is a better filter and a lot cheaper as well. And with a spin on filter, you can also run a FilterMag as well.
