hi, does anyone here know what type of bulb the OEM HID's use? car is a
2007 cayman S
, bi-xenon, etc
my local dealer wants something like $700 for bulbs, but considering i actually live in the middle of nowhere, figures
if i can simply get some replacement bulbs on my own, even if the shipping made up for the difference, i'd still feel better
anyone?
thanks for the time

Did you check your user's manual? I believe the bulb spec is listed on page 249 or around there.
Xenon's only come in two types of housings, d2s for projectors, and d2r for reflectors. You need a philips D2S at 4100k (sometimes marketed at 4300k, their color temperature after burn-in). You could also upgrade to a philips ultinon 6000k bulb if you prefer a more blue look. Don't buy a Japanese bulb to save money, go with a genuine philips d2s bulb.
I'm surprised your xenon bulb has gone out this early and warranty is not covering it, the bulbs are supposed to last for thousands of hours and if it has gone out this early it was a defective bulb and should be covered under warranty.

Been using and selling HID's since 1997 ,(for rally car pods) and although supplied a small number as "spares" never ever heard of one failing....yet. FYI:Retail in UK is about £65-70.00/bulb.
Sorry to resurrect this thread.
I installed
LEDs
in my fog & running light housings in my 2006 CS for something less dim. Unfortunately, those color temp ar 6000k whereas the factory low beam HID is 4300k.
I've looked at YouTube for replacing the bulbs and it appears that tey have a small circular base held in by a wire spring clip.
I just received 6000k HID low beam in the mail and they have a rather chunky sheet metal aluminum base (1.5 X 1.5 X 1") although just above the aluminum base is a plastic, grooved collar.
The bulbs were advertised as direct replacements for an 06 CS with bi-xenon HID (D1S labelling, OEM bulbs are labeled D2S)
Before taking everything apart, can I expect these bulbs to fit? Has anyone else run into this?
I've just ordered replacement bulbs for my 2008 Boxster with bi-xenons. The correct xenon bulb is D2S, which does not have that aluminum ballast attached. It looks like this:
Some internet sources say D1S for the 987.1 but that is
not correct.
D1S bulbs will not fit. Also, for best visibility you're better off staying in the 4100-4300K temperature range. The 6000K is very blue and might look cool but doesn't illuminate as well.
Philips bulbs are the OEM, and Osram Xenarc Night Breaker are a German-made equivalent with slightly better illumination. I've ordered mine from a respected vendor on Amazon.
@suneet
- do you know of ANY other part on a 16 year old vehicle that the manufacturer will warranty if it fails with low mileage? Or do you anticipate the bulb manufacturer has such a warranty policy?
@docman
- they sold you the wrong bulbs. Return them and look for a refund. I would not purchase from that vendor - those are no-name bulbs. There are LOTS of counterfeit and mislabeled bulbs being sold - even on Amazon. You might visit a few of the known manufacturer's websites on how to make sure the bulb is authentic. The issues with the bogus bulbs are - they're known for short lives. They've also been known to explode causing damage to the headlight housing - which is quite expensive to replace.
