Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Changed the discs and pads today, just did the fronts for now but I've a quandary with the pads?!?? The pads I've got from design 911 list as for a turbo but are a different design to the ones I've removed?!?! They're installed and I've gingerly been for a drive for five miles, all ok. But I m wondering if there was a pad revision and maybe I need a different pad retaining clip?!

POST 3Original post

The old ones have the anti rattle shims on them. You can just buy new ones and stick them to your new pads. MC

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I bought new anti vibration/rattle plates but the pads themselves are of a different design. The old ones had the 'lugs' on like the rear pads have.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The old ones were like these?!?

POST 6Original post

They may well do the job but they are the wrong pads from what i can see .. your old ones have what i would call balance weights .. New ones certainly don't . I know that pad replacement can be a bit of a nightmare .. not uncommon for me to do this job and go .. new ones aint the same as the old ones . If parts turn around and say they are a replacement then fine .. but i always ask the question .. are they correct as they aint the same .

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks demort. So that's what they are?!? Balance weights!! I'll ring design911 tomorrow and check. The new ones are textar and list as for a turbo, the 'balance weight' bit is the only difference. Funnily enough the parts drawing from Porsche shows the ones I have now got without the weight bits ?!? More confusion!

POST 8Original post

It's always possible the original pads fitted are the wrong ones :dont know: I do know pads whilst a simple item come in many different types and you obviously don't have the same ones fitted . I would want confirmation what you are fitting is actually correct as they are kind of important . My feeling .. the original ones are correct though .

POST 9Original post

The balance weights are a Brembo thing, so it's likely just that your old pads are Brembo and your new ones aren't. So as long as the shape of the pad backing plate is the same then there won't be any issues. I had Brembo standard pads in mine and they had the weights, I then put a set of 'track" Pagid pads in and they didn't have the weights (but were the same shape) these squealed toooooo much so I put a set of Brembo HP sport pads in and they again have the same weights.

POST 10Original post

I've had a quick look and some pads listed for the turbo don't seem to have the balance weights. FYI, balance weights aren't specific to Brembo, i've had them on Pagid, Textar and TRW But these listed on eBay that are actually genuine Porsche Textar pads and have the balance weights. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/25461693...ThugJPKVdL+TZRQWP3eGAw4mcR|tkp:Bk9SR6SRxqTmYA Maybe contact the supplier and ask them to check they are the correct item ??? Craig

POST 11Original post

Interestingly, Textar brakebook is showing them as suitable for the 996 Turbo (front axle, Textar part number 2313901, no roller weights): https://textar.brakebook.com/bb/textar/en_GB/PKW/92/2033/14400/applicationSearch.xhtml The data sheet cross reference is 99635194912 which I believe is the Porsche part number. I have also seen Brembo pads without the roller weights.

POST 12Original post

IF ... you are unsure of any part then you phone an OPC parts dept .. give them your chassis number and get them to look it up .. get a price , availability and a part number .. At that point you can order from wherever with the correct part number . Sometimes .. OPC prices are pretty good .

POST 13Original post

Thanks, hadn't ever seen them before until a) buying the Porsche and b) buying the two sets of Brembo pads, but I stand corrected.

POST 14Original post

That's the good thing about this site, we all get learn a little something from time to time

POST 15Original post

They're not "balance weights", they're harmonic vibration mass dampers to reduce/stop brake squeal. As you were
