I fitted the same head unit albeit in a gen 1 987 but works seamlessly with the Apple car play function and with the correct adaptors it’s all plug and play 👍

Suggestion
Apart from I can’t work out how to use radio whilst the CarPlay is on - set source to TV (which activates the CarPlay) seems impossible to then use the radio without going back to normal PCM display

They replied - sort of - but weren't much help so I followed up again and so far nothing back, which I suspect means that their unit isn't compatible with the CDR-31.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am interested in this too. I have been looking at the NM Automotive CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade but I would need to get professionally fitted as I don’t fancy doing it myself.
Anyone done this or have a better alternative?

I had the NM system fitted to my 2016 981. I had a look at the fitting instructions but handed it over to someone who knows what they are doing. The head unit has to have a new printed circuit board installed, and there is a small mic added plus a USB port in the glovebox (for firmware updates) and some other stuff.
The mic sits out of eyesight in an area obscured by the left side of the steering wheel.
It isn’t compatible with keeping a Porsche warranty AFAIK.
The system is wireless. The phone and head unit do a handshake over Bluetooth then switch to a wifi connection broadcast by the head unit. The Carplay menu sits behind the AUX channel of PCM 3 - select AUX and you’re into it. Select a different source and you’re back to PCM 3. Control is by touchscreen or you can use the non-volume rotary dial to move around.
I've had the NMAutomotive unit put in my Cayman S. It has refreshed the car and brought it bang up to date, with back to old PCM on the few times I need it. Has worked almost flawlessly - I've had a few times where I've had to force the wireless connection to my phone to refresh but I understand that it is the occasional blip with any wireless Carplay system.
I also had front and back cameras put in which again integrate beautifully. Mine was fitted by Sextons in London - a bit of a trek for me but I can't recommend them enough, they fitted this, the cameras and front and back dsashcams and you would not have had a clue they had been in the car.
Happy to answer any questions if I can

It's probably worth clarifying this a bit:
Porsche Extended Warranty said:
A claim made under Your Policy shall be invalid to the extent that the defect results from any of the following:
...
Non-Porsche Genuine Parts have been fitted to Your Vehicle
...
So it doesn't invalidate your extended warranty as a whole (a common misconception), but if a fault develops specifically as a result of you fitting the unit, that fault won't be covered (full exclusions text
here
). In practice that probably means that if your PCM develops a fault in future it won't be covered, which doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
It's also possible that if an OPC sees non-standard parts fitted they may not allow the car to pass an 111-point check, but given that these days you don't need an 111-point check to renew a warranty (you only need one to put a warranty on an un-warranty'd car) that's much less of an issue. Also, based on my previous experience of 111-point checks, I'd say the chance of an OPC spotting this particular mod is close to zero.
Here's a video showing the "tricky" part of fitting the NMAutomotive kit - putting the new PCB into the head unit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIdQdn1PoT0
I've fitted one myself to my 987.2 and it's almost exactly the same process. If you're comfortable building a PC then you won't find it difficult as the instructions are very detailed (other than worrying about damaging the PCM and the cost to replace it if you do). The time consuming part was hiding away the box and making sure the cabling is neatly routed out of the way. If any of that makes you nervous it's well worth paying someone to fit it for you.
Totally transformed my car and with the better display on a 981 it'll be even better (swiping on the old PCM 3.0 isn't the best). Nice to be able to switch back to the standard display if need be and it uses the PCM bluetooth for calls which is handy. Well worth it and has run flawlessly for me over the past year.
I fitted a Sony XAV 550 system to my 981. Pretty straightforward. I have DAB and Carplay. Also drags the cabin into the 2020's.
Just works without dismembering the standard Porsche unit. Fitted two examples now into my previous 987.2 and now my 981

Is that what you have fitted ? be interested in thoughts on it if so and is fitting straight forward, have watched a couple of tutorials and it looks like its a bit faffy but doable.

No problem:
The Joy Auto Carplay module is a better route than the NM automotive one in my experience. It has more control for EQ and so on so you can really improve the sound quite a bit over standard.

thanks for that, I half like the idea of someone coming to fit it but at £700 they are charging £460 for fitting plus additional charges to come to you, I am tempted to order the isudar kit up at £240 shipped and fit it myself more I watch the video the more straightforward it's looking, seems to be plug and play.

No external unit or external power feed should make the fitting much simpler.
£240 sounds like good value too.
I think you should take one for the team, buy it, fit it and report back

Well I have ordered one, 5-10 days shipping so will see how it plays out. £251 shipped was the end cost with a discount code .

I have done this myself by following the several youtube tutorials. The sections are 1) remove unit 2) split unit and add circuit board 3) put unit back together and in car 4) wire up joyauto box 5) refit trims etc 6) enjoy refreshed system. Has worked faultlessly since install 4 mths ago. Apart from a few skinned knuckles and sweary bits, its doable by a novice. Take your time, watch a section of video, take it step by step.

Looking forward to seeing how you get on with this - I'm tempted to get one for my 981 cayman. The PCM is the only weak point of the car IMO (Ive only had the car a month).

yeh It feels really dated compared to our Macan, first thing I noticed when I picked the car up but strangely after a week I am sort of getting used to it but if the carplay is as good as it looks it will fetch it up to date.

Obviously it will never have carplay but it does actually get the job done reasonably well once you get the hang of how it works.
If the interface was a little less long winded, which I think is the real problem, it would show it in a better light.
I look forward to following your progress, this add on could be just the job.
Watching this thread with interest too as I'm looking to add Carplay to my Cayman which has the CDR-31 (or CDR3.1, the basic unit whatever it's called!).
I've looked at the JoyeAuto, NMAutomotive, Isudar and various other similar units and it's hard to choose, but the big difference in price is making me lean towards ordering the JoyeAuto off AilExpress or Alibaba.
There also seem to be various knock-offs of (I think) the Unichip unit which also seems to be good and they are by a long way the cheapest at around the £170 mark plus shipping. Units by Mekede, TomoStrong and Fellostar:
https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&i...
Anyone have any experience of these units?
Also JeffC do you have a link to the unit you ordered and perhaps the discount code?
Many thanks!

I too have the CDR 31, and want to have a go at one of these. I don't think Isudar offer a solution for CDR?
Yeah I don't think they do one for CDR-31 either. I messaged them and they asked me to send pictures of the CDR-31 which I did but then didn't hear any more...
Hard to tell if any of these boxes actually support the CDR-31 apart from the JoyeAuto.
I have the Joyauto kit in my car which I fitted myself and works brilliantly. However if I was to do it again I would use the 'Isudar' kit as everything is then internal and no additional external wifi box or power source required.
Highly which ever option you go for it is so much nicer to get into my Cayman and a minute later my phone connect wirelessly to apple car play on the PCM.

Does seem for our CDR units, JoyeAuto is the best option.

I thought the 981s had a PCM 3.1, is there a CDR-31 option(?), and if so what is the difference between them?
This shows the difference between PCM 3.1 & CDR31:
https://thecarplayer.com/blogs/news/difference-bet...
Basically the CDR-31 doesn't have Nav and has CD/Aux & Sat buttons whereas the PCM 3.1 has Navi & Map buttons.

That would appear to be what I have plus the Bose upgrade, by the sounds of it what I have probably cost as much as a small family car when it was ordered
Very keen to know how you got on, if there’s any chance I could be so cheeky as to ask you to take a couple of pictures along the way, and post them, I’m sure I along with others would find it very useful.

Tackled the job tonight got my pal to assist he is good with stuff like this but tbh with the video to watch you can’t go wrong we watched the video and did it at the same speed so really start to finish it’s prob an hour to do.
We did however have an issue where we had no screen so had to pull back out and immediately found we had popped a ribbon off so was an easy fix , video said we didn’t need to use the mic as my car has The factory one already but it didn’t seem to work so I’ve fitted the supplied mic , I’ve come in now so just need to finish it in the morn but a quick play seems to be all working as it should . Will report back tmrw when I’ve had time to test it all properly but from what I can see so far so far so good 🤷♂️
Blimey you don't hang about
Out of interest, not sure if it is relevant or not but do you have the internal Jukebox or BOSE options on your car?
Also is the mic used for phonecalls, voice commands or both? In other words, if you didn't bother with it what would you lose?
Looking forward to the road test

mine has bose and jukebox, not sure on the mic thing,my car has phone , I did not go into the settings to see if there is a way on enabling the oem mic, I will maybe have a look this morn, I only briefly tried it last night before I heard a bottle of wine opening so I downed tools and left it.
I tried to reply to a text but it wasn't hearing my voice so I quickly plugged in the mic that came with the kit and straight away it picked it up and worked so worst case will mean routing the mic cable .

Sounds like an identical setup to mine, maybe it will work with the original mic and you wont need the extra one which would be even better.
Either way sounds like this is heading the right way
Well In true bloke fashion not reading the instruction manual there is a setting to enable the original mic so that’s all good been out a good 4 hours today and it’s not missed a beat , connected every time pretty much instantly and disconnected , would almost go as far as saying it’s pretty impressive ,Only thing I would maybe say is and again it might be in a settings menu but when it reads a text out the volume is lower than the music so with roof down I couldn’t hear it so I found myself having to turn it up and then Back down when the music started, I will have a fiddle with that later see if I can find it , I did go in the volume menu and turn everything up but didn’t appear to help with that. My car doesn’t have a rear camera but has the option now of fitting one into this which I thing would be really easy, also noticed now when I turn my wheel it comes up on the display , I’ve disabled that though til I sort a camera .
In short for £250 it’s worth every penny even just to fetch the dash display up to date and doing one again I think you could have one in and out finished in around 30mins.

This looks great, thanks Jeff. I've been trying to get an answer from Isudar as to whether they have a unit which works with the CDR-31 (or CDR3.1, whatever it's called - the one with Sat and CD/Aux buttons!).

I'm now thinking the JoyeAuto unit is the best bet though struggling to find a good price for it.
There's also this unit which appears to be simpler and I've seen versions under the Navifly/Mekede/Krando/generic brands:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003395942064.h...
Don't suppose anyone has fitted one of those?
I'm looking at adding CarPlay to my 2015 Macan when I stumbled across this:
https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod152772/MOST-Car...
Looks to be just plug and play and offer better sound quality as it's straight into the MOST.
Says coming next month... anyone know anything more about it or have experience of Mr 12 Volt stuff?
Which videos did you use for following instructions??
Edit to add, removing previous comments, I've found a couple of videos now and can see you need to shuffle the Bose cable into the new harness. The only question I have now is, did you have to buy some additional standoffs to raise the board above the DAB module? Or did they supply tall enough ones in the box? (this info was taken from a Isudar vid (which doesn't have DAB) vs a Macan install vid that does have DAB))

How do you switch between the CarPlay and standard Porsche interface?

it's just a push of the button and you back to the Porsche display.

Can I ask what happens if you have CarPlay up and its doing its thing and somebody rings you?
I've got the Joy auto setup, including some fixed firmware that upped the fps to make it smoother and corrected the aspect ratio so circle are round.
It's the same as any other carplay setup - your phone is the screen and has control of the speaker and the mic (for most that is the mic in the kit). YOu can keep your phone connected to the car bluetooth thing that will then grab the screen back, but for most keep it in carplay/android.
Currently my microphone is rubbish, truly dire, need to revisit that.
Other than that the system is awesome. Somehow sounds better than bluetooth through the standard PCM. I'm 981 with the Bose. The one thing I did do is turn the volume of the music in the joytech system down to 8/10 as is was distorting before.
EDIT: The other thing I did was replace the HDD in the head unit for an SSD whilst I did the fitting. The HD failing seems to be the main reason for PCM issues that are the best part of £2k to resolve. If you've a post '13 head unit (with the jukebox) it's a standard SATA drive (£30 upwards), but a bit more tricky on the early 2012 models like mine as it will only work with a very small selection of IDE SSD drives which are very rare now. It's 5 more mins with a screwdriver and 30 mins on your laptop/PC. You can also backup the software, so if the new SSD fails you can just pop in a new one. Plus side is the head unit starts up faster now too.

Hi Fiesta, so what ide ssd drive do we need for a pre jukebox model have you got any more information please?
Also wonder on the early 2012 cars are there any other potential issues with adding the CarPlay ie heat sink etc?
Thx

I am hoping I will never have to do this but if you did does the capacity of the drive have to match?
How do you back up the software?
There is literally 1 SSD that would work, but zero availability given they've not been produced for about 8 years.
I went with plan B -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017VQT5YW/ref=p...
works with a small (64GB iirc) mSATA SSD. Again, it's this specific chipset that works, so cheaper mSATA -> IDE adapters don't work. This exact adapter is available under different brands, so look around and make sure the picture is the same, but Amazon got it to me in 2 days from the US and was happy to pay to secure one (as these will disappear in time too).
The HDD in the car will fail at some point - regular use will reduce the chance but still. I used Aomei to grab an image of the existing drive. That's now safely stored as a copy so if the SSD fails, I can write another. Macrium etc will work but you need to specify sector by sector copy.
Size wise - as long as the SSD is same/bigger than the HDD then it will work (but you don't gain space for the jukebox if bigger). I think (it was a year ago now) that the standard HDD was 40GB in mine (no jukebox) so 64GB was plenty. I think the jukebox drive are 100GB, but don't quote me. 64GB->128GB->256GB is only a fiver a hop, so no danger in going big, and larger SSDs last longer on writes.
Happy to help if people have more questions / need a hand with the computery bits. You need a few bits of kit like USB->ide adapters as well.
EDIT: to be clear - this is for PCM3.0 (987.2) and early PCM3.1 (981) units. From 2013 the 981 units use SATA drives that are cheap and plentiful as still a current standard.
So I bought the Mr 12 volt “plug and play” solution
It isn’t… still need to take your PCM apart and insert a new board etc
That said, I got there in the end. Didn’t bother with fitting supplied mic as calls divert to PCM (your phone will be connected to 2 Bluetooth at once) or cables for reverse camera. Mounted the box by drivers left knee under the lower dash . Cables fed through from there.
Fiddly business 5hrs all told, used their (s
t) video and the test drive Scotland one - v useful (and a great bloke) tips like removing the gear lever and some of the trim
You need a selection of torx a soft tool (or I used a plastic spatula) and I would say a lot of patience
But worthwhile in the end !
I’ve been looking at the Mr12V one for a while but was waiting for someone else to take the plunge. ☺️
The install looks similar to all of the other kits, I was hoping there wouldn’t be a need for the daughter board in the PCM unit though.
How does the CarPlay interact with the PCM functions? Does it feel clunky and/or stop the use of some of the buttons like other systems?
Sound quality okay?
When removing the PCM from the car, do you lose all of your settings when replacing it? Does it just work when plugging it back in or do you need it to be coded? Sorry for the stupid question but I’ve not removed a head unit from a Porsche before.
I missed out on the pre-order discount with them unfortunately but did you have any ordering issues? I guess they shipped it from their UK warehouse so no extra taxes to pay?
Hope it works out well for you, it’s the only thing I miss as I use this car as a daily driver now.
Morning
Install v similar yes
Sound quality is excellent as it uses the optical
No resetting / coding of the PCM needed
The kit came with no instructions and the video was pretty poor. That said it’s pretty much the same whichever kit you buy
So far it has worked perfectly. Apart from I can’t work out how to use radio whilst the CarPlay is on - set source to TV (which activates the CarPlay) seems impossible to then use the radio without going back to normal PCM display
For me that’s fine as I mainly stream from Spotify anyway esp on longer journeys when I want apple maps or Waze running
Handoff to phone on original factory mic works fine
The taking apart the PCM is v fiddly and a delicate job - would be v easy to damage something and then be into big money for a replacement - so I wouldn’t put you off but it’s a risky operation !
Bought it from their website - arrived within a week
To add - that’s the inside of the PCM. You have to install an additional circuit board and 3 new ribbon connectors.
The blue box is the Mr 12 volt box, I fitted this using number plate adhesive foam pads. It cannot be seen from any normal angle driving or getting in / out. It’s too big to get behind the pcm or buried behind the centre console and I would have overheating concerns
Odd you need a full hardware solution, for the newer pcm 4 there is a way to do it just using an Sd card…

Quite handy if you’ve a 718…

I'm swapping my 2013 981 CS for a 2016 GTS this week.
As shown earlier in this thread, i fitted a Sony aftermarket head unit to my Cayman S which works really well and has Carplay. I'd like to fit the Sony to my GTS but realised it has Bose which makes it incompatible. There don't seem to be any wiring harness adapters to get round the Bose install. for a slightly earlier year of the 981 there is a solution but apparently not for my 2016 car.
I can't be the first to encounter this problem, does anyone have a fix?
I have had this a few months now and it is a little hit and miss TBH, sometimes I have to manually search for the connection, this is more so If I start the car, turn it off and go back to it within a few minutes and 9/10 once I drive away it disconnects after about 30 secs of driving and them comes back on, it's always fine once connected though. Also noticed when I turn the car off and in reach it still seems to be connected even though the car is turned off.
I would be interested to hear if anyone else had similar issues or is it just me.

I have my Sony XAV AX 555D headunit complete with all cabling, fascia trim, new DAB ariel etc for sale. Works really well with carplay, cost about £700 11 months ago. See installed pix near the start of the thread. Absolutely as new, £350 plus shipping to the UK. Selling as my new Cayman has DAB and Bose.

There has been reports of a ‘popping’ noise when using thie Mr12Volt CarPlay system with Bose PCM setups which has put me off if I’m honest.
See the thread below for details.

Seems like a total mess that Mr12Volt unit. I can't fathom why people just don't stick with the MM Automotive solution as that has local UK support. Mr12Volt and his WhatsApp seems a questionable way to be managing customer service queries.
Plus as others report, the MOST approach is harsh sounding - I could tell that even from their YT videos.

Is this one without issues? just looked there its double the price of the one I fitted and wonder now if it would have been worth the extra.
For most of the time the isudar I have fitted is fine just the odd niggle but every journey it does work and all the carplay functions work well.
I'm now on my second NM Automotive unit having upgraded from a Cayman S to GTS. Both fitted professionally. Not had any problems with either, and getting it booked in to be fitted was the first thing I did after agreeing to buy the GTS. Really seamless, has worked flawlessly and Nick who runs NM Automotive is really helpful and responsive on email with any queries.
Expensive but in this case I think you get what you pay for - I couldn't; make the car my daily without it...

You get what you pay for. As the subsequent reply mentions, NMAutomotive are hands on, easily contactable, will FaceTime you or your installer, provide video guides, and help with every part of the customer journey and installation. I'd rather pay more and know I can pick up the phone and speak direct to someone.

Just bumping this thread - has anyone tried the units from Elite Carplay -
https://www.elitecarplay.co.uk/product-page/porsch...
Apparently an offer on for £99 off with the code "ELITE" though doesn't seem to be working at the mo.
They look like rebranded Joyeauto units and at £400 with the coupon are a comparable price to ordering from Joyeauto direct (458 Euros).
The Isudar units appear to be simpler to install but doesn't look like they have one to work with CDR-31 (CD-R 3.1 unit or whatever it's actually called!!).
Does anyone know of anywhere to get the Joyeauto units a bit cheaper, or know of any alternative car play units for our base stereos?
I've looked on Alibaba but it's a bit confusing and the search is rubbish.
Thanks!

Fitted mine on Thursday afternoon. Works really well, gets onto the carplay screen automatically about 10 secs after turning the ignition on.
I had cause to phone Nick at NVM for a bit of help initially. He was really helpful, guessing my issue instantly and I guess resisting the temptatioon to mention that I was a bit dim.As I expected, I hadn't read the instructions carefully enough and missed the detail about fitting a couple of the ribbon cables. (There's a notch at one end which must be fitted to the sub board that I hadn't noticed.)
The actual mechanics of opening the headunit etc is very straighforward even for someone who hasn't trained as a gynaecologist. I also made sure I covered everything in cloths, even taping one to the at risk area of the steering wheel to be extra careful.

Can I ask if all is well with this upgrade after some real world experience, some of the ones available sound a little flaky?

I've had my NM Automotive one for almost 2 years (albeit in my 987.2, but it's the same tech) and it's been great. Continues to work flawlessly and I wouldn't be without it. Really has brought my oldish car into the modern era!

Mine has worked perfectly since I installed it. Such a fundamental piece of kit these days, I'd be lost without it - especially the Waze and Google maps functionality.
Get it bought!

You're not helping convince me I don't need to do this
I presume you have a 3.1 PCM, does yours have BOSE and DAB?
Mr12volt do a wireless Apple Carplay / Android Auto solution for PCM 3.1 that is well regarded and uses the digital MOST audio line and comes through the TV tuner input.

Works with BOSE.

they come and fit at your home. If you look at their Instagram they seem to be trusted by owners of some serious cars.
Hi, how much better is the smart-tuning Car Play than the others? Is it reilable and are there any disadvantages? I like the idea of using the original bluetooth and mic etc for high quality audio. Also is it possible to use the existing radio and a Car Play app for navigation concurrently? Many thanks!
For what it’s worth, i installed the Mr12Volt system a couple of weeks ago and it works brilliantly.
Very happy customer and managed to do the install myself.
OK so I went with the Smart Tuning option recently. It’s completely hidden, and works really well. I also added a new reversing camera at the same time.
I like the fact that it uses the original Bluetooth AUX so the audio sounds very good. This works both through the existing PCM screens or via Car Play. Car Play joins automatically when the engine is started, though it’s necessary to switch to BT AUX each time you want to hear anything from Car Play (I don’t mind that for the quality gain). The Info button easily switches back into Car Play, and the Option button activates Siri (you can also say Hey Siri). The dials allow scrolling which I found is easier than using the screen as it’s a little slow to scroll (assumed due the touch screen rather than Car Play).
The reversing camera activates any time reverse is selected (no matter whether in Car Play or PCM screens), and draws reversing lines which bend as the wheel is rotated (which I didn’t expect).
Installation was professional, and pretty quick given the need to take the PCM apart to fit the new board.
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
