Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Guys, I'm looking for info on pinning the IMS gears. I've seen it done a few different ways, but I'm not really sure what's correct. Based on the image below (found online), it looks like the gears are independent and both need to be pinned?

POST 2Original post

Yes, but before then are pinned (or welded), the gears need to be indexed (checked to make sure the both are in the correct position, as they can move on the shaft).

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! Does the shaft need to be balanced after?

POST 4Original post

The IMS tube is surprisingly thin, the gear sprockets are thick and a different alloy from the tube. So this job is not one for a novice with their cheapo MIG welder(like me !). If you use a set screw make very sure to use the correct grade of Loctite. Can you imagine if it loosened and fell out? Consider shipping it to someone who has done hundreds of these ? Ask here for referrals.

If it is done right, no.

I'd send it to LN Engineering and have them do their 3 row bearing while they are in there. Mike

POST 7Original post

LN did mine with the 3 row bearing. If I recall the set screw went down between the sprockets at each end.
