Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The screen on my PCM2 has failed unfortunately. Sent it off to get assessed and was quoted >£900 to repair... so that's a no! If I get a second hand replacement unit off the bay are they switchable, or do they need to be coded? Thanks in advance 👍

POST 2Original post

That is a very good question !! Logically if something is for sale on ebay it must be interchangeable other wise the company would just get that item returned all the time .. that's how i look at things anyways .. I've swapped out a 997 pcm with a spare to test a fault in the past and that worked just fine .. i would assume a 996 would be the same .. there is no security code im aware of .. i would go with a 90 % yes .. caveat .. i'm not paying if i am wrong but a 997 and i have done it . The question is why not upgrade it to a new non Porsche unit ? the original one is pretty dated these days and unless you really want to keep the car original then an upgrade would make more sense Imho .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Demort - 90% sure from your good self is enough for me 👍 My thinking was that if I could get a replacement unit for a sensible price it would do me for a while rather than investing in a modern unit or the new PCM plus (albeit the problems with this rather put me off). Plus I rather like the fact all the trip computer and functionality are integrated (although dated).

POST 4Original post

It is i'm afraid the best i can come up with .. been a long time since i have fitted a new pcm in a 996 but i don't remember a security code . As said .. i have swapped a 997 unit with no issues and also if they are for sale on ebay then logically there should be no issues . Be worth investigating the cost of say a Kenward unit first though . DON'T go down the classic Porsche radio path .. please .

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

👍 thanks as always DeMort. All understood with the Porsche Classic c:
