I also replaced the back seat cushions with some black leather ones.

Suggestion
Could I please confirm that the red and the brown wire from the DRIVER side seat (disconnected from the black box) are the power lines to the 997 DRIVER seat?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. I've test fit 997 seat into a 996 and they are a superb improvement!
Can anyone help with advice on what exactly do I need to do to get 997 seat to work with in my 996?
Thanks for any advice.
If you have the full monty seats with memory, heat, lumbar, etc. the electronics are a major obstacle. None of the plugs of the 996 match the 997. Plus the 997 has an air bag so you have to be sure not to include it in any live wiring or best remove it.
I'm with ya on the 997's being better seats. I have a set but they are sitting in my garage because I gave up on trying to wire them up. I even have a set of donor 996 seat bases with all the plugs and modules to use but it's beyond my capabilities! Anybody in the Bay Area that knows how to do this or knows somebody and/or a shop please let me know.
That electronic part is what I'm trying to figure out.
The seats drop right in, but the plugs are different and I've read something about a reflash.
Appears that the SAM that controls the seats are different.
Trying to figure out what the process would be.
These 997 GT3 Sports seats only have electronic adjustment in seat back's forward/backward. So, that makes things easy.
To make things simple, I prepared a 996 seat's connector.
Speaking of seat swaps, can I swap a set of Boxster seats into a MkII 996? I've seen OEM GT3 style seats in Boxsters and wondering if I can use these in my 40th AE.
I put a set of hardback 997 sport seats in my 996. Simple swap, with a couple caveats. 1) the 997 sport seats only use power to the seatback recline function (2 wires) - height and distance from pedals are manual. 2) The seat belt from the 997 will not extinguish the "airbag light"... you'll need a 996 drivers side seat belt receptacle - you can either swap it for the 997 one or just leave it connected under the seat.
I found some 997 turbo s seats that I am very tempted to put in my 996tt. But they are the full electric seats with 5 buttons on each. Is the only option to manual solider everything like on the pelican forum?
I am also in the process of installing a set of 997 seats in a 2000 996. I bought s a set of Sand Beige full function/memory seat in great shape for only $300. I had been looking at many options for several years as my old seat were slowly coming apart. I had done the research and knew that the memory seat and the related electronics was more involved but after reading the Pelican Parts article on retrofitting the seat by modifying the drivers side switch I decided to intake the installation and picked up the seat a week or so ago. Then a week or so ago when I went onto Pelican I found that they had totally updated their website and in doing so the pictures that were part the the article had disappeared. Bummer! The passenger side is pretty basic but the modifications the the drivers control is more involved and the pictures were great I. Showing in detail the work to be done. I checked other tech articles and all the pictures came through on the new site. I talked to Pelican and they thanked me for letting them know of the problem and said it would be fixed but they were not sure when.
on line I found one of the pictures but that is all so far? I am wondering if anyone has a copy of this information? Without it I am basically on hold on the drivers seat until the site gets updated.
I am getting close on this conversion. I got the passenger seat done quickly as while it is a full electric seat the passenger seat has no memory so it I a matter of swapping some connector, actually pretty simple. The driver’s side with memory I much more complicated. I am not even trying to make the memory function/computer work, just by passing it and making the switches work. I have been able to recover enough of the information and pictures from the Pelican Parts article to get the switch reworked for the basic functions. I.e. back and forth movement. Tilting the fron and rear of the seat bottom and tilting the back of the seat. I will share this info when I have some time, and I figured how to use mor of the printed circuit board wiring. For this I only have to connect the wires from the switches to the motors.
The challenge has been making the lumbar support switches, pump etc work. I think I have it figured out and just need to find the time to retire this portion of the circuit board and connect this the the wires under the seat frame. Hopefully I can get this done soon and then share the information! The 997 seat are a big step up from the 996 seats, and with the
prices you can find the 997 seats, usually less than than 996 seat, I should be able to finish this project for less than even recovering with the L Seat covers
Wanted to bump this thread if the pictures / tutorial were ever recovered from Pelican, as I'm about to embark on the same project (996 comfort seats getting swapped out for 997 adaptive sport seats). Not interested in maintaining the driver's seat memory function if the bypass for that makes this project a lot easier. Would love any advice. Thanks!
If anyone has the url for the pelican article it might be found in a few if the internet archive sites.
Post the article url?
My question. I have 997 gt2 I want to put into my 996. Im wondering only about the seat belt. Would it just be easiest to keep the 996 belt receiver tucked under the chair with a belt clip in it?
well in truth Im also wondering if the airbag can be wired up. I assume no because the 996 seat didnt have one, so why would power and any kind of deploy airbag signal would get to it.
I just installed 997 seats in my 996. Very simple and straight forward swap. There's a power and a ground on the main body harness and there is a power and a ground on the 997 seat. You will need to remove the wires from the plug connector on the seat bottom. Reuse the stock 996 seat receptacles. No go getting the airbags to work but there's absolutely no point as the 996 has the same airbags mounted in the doors. I haven't had a chance to go in and remove the airbags from the seats. One note of warning
DO NOT LEAVE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. I did so and it tripped the airbag light. Easy enough to clear but best to be avoided. Lee's video is actually a fantastic reference. This is one mod that is worth every penny. The 997 sport seats are leaps and bounds better than the 996 units. They sit lower and have better lateral and lumbar support
So dporto started this all for me 3 years ago. Been looking to swap from the gray lounge chairs to Recaro Sportster, 996 sport or 997 sport. dporto made the swap and posted how he did what so many of us wished we could. I just couldnt quite wrap my head around the slickest way to do the wiring. I have a simple 2-way seat, so I figured I could do this without frying stuff. Absolutely no way Id consider doing a power seat swap. Makes me pucker just thinking of how that adventure to Futilityville would end: Large garage fire, divorce, institutional care. Oh, and I needed to find a seat set.
I like the looks of the 997 sport seats. Really like them. But I worried the newer Recaro style would be, well, too modern looking for a relatively spartan 996 interior. The 996 sport seats look ok, but guessed theyd be too much like the comfort seat padding with some wings. The newer Recaros are very nice as well. Lots of $$$ these days. Turned out I found some black 997 manual sports from a wrecked Cayman. The only difference from 997 to 987 is the seat back control button. And the price was wicked good.
The light bulb went on for me when I saw the 997 seat connector and Petza914 posted a photo of the pin layout for the power and ground in another thread. Easy! dporto really did a great service for me with his posts. The hard part for me was determining wire gauge and how I was going to locate and wire the seat in my car.
Im only hitting highlights for my 2-way install and adding some part numbers to add to the plethora of previous posts on the interweb to help the next person spend less time staring at stuff, like I did. And again, huge props to dporto and the brave few whove accomplished this. The pictures should be very helpful for the next person. Part numbers are found in the captions.
I cannibalized the 996 seat connector. Slide out the airbag wire then twist and remove the connector from the 996 seat bottom and clip the power and ground wires to your desired length, leaving pins in place. Or, you can order the 996 connector shells, the little covers and pins to make a new set for the 997 seats (easiest). Making two jumper sets, like I have in picture #4 is simple and would cost $40 shipped from AutoAtlanta, is the boss solution for any manual 996 to 997 swap.
I kept the driver 997 belt and tied it to bottom of seat. Youll understand why when you see that connector.
The brown ground is always at the top, closest to the bottom of the seat.
Reuse the 996 belt receivers.
No need to worry about seat bags. Zero electrical connection.
I like the hook ends on the seat back buttons. But, those are pretty simple to change, if you want.
If you can find the parts and make the connector look just like mine, before you touch a wrench, I could see this whole swap taking no more than 3 hours.
Worth all the effort! I used an Extend-a-Seat with the 996 chairs. Not needed anymore. The seat is lower, but more supportive. The backrest shell color is a darn good match for Seal Gray. I also replaced the back seat cushions with some black leather ones. No more sea of gray!

C. Mount for seat connector is same for 997, just different color.
A. Airbag/belt wire connector easily slides out laterally. No pin keepers to find. B. There may be a couple of spots you might try to mount a second connector. All depends on how you decide to configure.
This is all you need for a 2-way seat.

My problem is that finding a set of used 997 seats up in western Canada is really really difficult. I'm here now checking oit this thread because a set has popped up but man he wants $3500 CAD for them. They're nice, no argument there, but what kinda dollars are you guys paying?
If that’s about $2600 then that’s a good price for sport seats. I shopped for many, many months and didn’t find any 997 sports for $3000 or less (except for some tan or blue). If they’re in good shape you might wait a good while to find any 2-way 997 sports for any less. 996 sport seats are over $3000 for ok condition and I do not believe any 996 seat, except the buckets have noteworthy ergonomics.
Note: I found some that were in great shape with one small rip that was easy to repair for $1900 (CAD2350) from a salvage shop. Those are the ones pictured.
Thanks for the notes. I do see a $1000 set of 987 seats available in Seattle, which is a 100 miles and a border hop away. I don't know if those seats and the sport seats I found locally are the same...
Hard to compare without having themside by side....gotta take a closer look at the photos tomorrow and do some research to find out what was available at the time.
Your label "Ground" is the ground for the seat motors.
Your label "Power+" is the power for the seat motors.
Your label "brown?" is the ground for the seat heaters.
Your label "purple?" is the power for the seat heaters.
Your label "blue?" is the control wires for the seat heaters.
Your label "yellow?" is the seat belt latch sensor, this appears to be the passenger seat as the driver's seat uses all 4 positions.
I thought about the sport seat route bit I'm planning some Sparco QRT seats soon so I imagine I will have to pull out the wiring/ plug from the original seat to keep the airbag functional and light off..
Super helpful!!! thanks so much.
I have now made an updated version with the actual colors from the wires, and also the wires and 991 plug that I am making an adapter too.
hopefully you can also confirm some of that?
This is great! I am just about to transplant some 997 heated power seats to replace my 996 heated power seats.
Is anyone able to explain where those 4x wires from the 996 plug (labeled for seat heater control in the bottom photo) would interface with the 997 seat? I see the seat heater power and ground connections, but these four control wires remain a mystery.
Thanks!
Never mind. I figured it out.
For folks trying to get the heated 997 seats to work in their 996, youll need to add one of these guys.
The 996 has the seat heater relay as part of the seat. The 997 does not (probably in the car). So you have to add the 996 relay to the 997 wiring to get the 996 sweat heater switch to function properly. You also get the added bonus of having the correct plug to mate to your 996 body wiring harness to give you a more factory look.
Not really sure how all this would translate for a 991.
I can tell you that I was able to figure out my issue by comparing the 997 and 996 wiring diagrams. I suspect that you could solve the 991 riddle by comparing that wiring to the 996. Bueno suerte.
Could I please confirm that the red and the brown wire from the DRIVER side seat (disconnected from the black box) are the power lines to the 997 DRIVER seat? I have the battery disconnected so I don't know if they are the right ones to test. Thank you.
The red 14 gauge wire is seat power and the brown 14 gauge wire is seat ground, so yes. #1 and #2 marked on the plug.
Those two wires will plug into positions 4 and 9 with female spades on the 996 connector.
Hallvardr were you able to resolve the heating on your seats. I am currently undergoing the installation of 991.2 all power seats. Reading all related treads it seems ventilation and memory is not possible to get working. I do have an additional plug with power and ground in the middle of the 3 plugs. Do I send power there also?
I believe that the 991 have the controls for the heated seats on the control panel, so they get the proper amount of power directly from the unit. And the 996 only sendts signals to the seats where relays gives the proper power to the actual heat panels. I sold the seats and the new owner also had heated seats, so he wanted the relays. I therefore never got to confirm my theory, and I have not bought new ones to test. So it's still a theory.
I still have the old comfort seats with the relays so I can confirm your theory, just need to know how to connect them. Also I have two power lines going into the seat should I connect only the one in the yellow harness? Thanks
Everything you should need to know is in the diagram I sent. Main power and ground is all you need. To get the heat working you need power and ground to the relay on the seat, and then the usual connections from the car to control them.
Hey
@paopao
saw your name mentioned here with regard to a harness. I tried PM but it looks like you're over your limit. I'm curious whats the harness that you sell.
Hey all, just picked up a cheap pair of full power 997 seats with DC Auto going out of business.
@hallvardr
Would your diagram above work for the full electric seats or only the power reclining seats? Also, I noticed in your video you've got the 996 end of the harness you made which I understand you got from Rosepassion. But where did you get the other end of it, the yellow part that plugs into the seat? Is that something I can buy online as well? Thank so much!
You Tube
Thinking about taking this approach and attempting to take the individual wires out of the yellow adapter on the 997 seat and connect them one by one to a new 996 adapter that I'd buy online. Then attempt to plug into the car. Thoughts.
I'd spend a LOT of time looking at wiring diagrams first. On the surface it doesn't seem impossible but a lot depends on what options are included on each seat. In the case of that video they are going from a more complex seat to the simplest seat. In that case I would definitely think that moving a wire or two would be practical. However if you are going in the other direction it might not be straightforward.
Study the wiring diagrams.
