Me too just checked my 991.2 never knew that groove was there - that’s engineering for you….

I got 4yr warranty (2yr remaining manufacturer, 2yr approved used), so don't have to worry for quite a while.

I've used the CTEK MXS 5.0 (part# 56-975) in AGM mode when charging the 718.

The V6 Exiges have been on my list, I should try to check these out.

Why they didn't fix it with the 718 iteration and reverse the direction, I have no idea.
I've decided to treat myself to my first Porsche as I've been a long-time lurker. I've just bought a Cayman GTS 4.0 with the manual gearbox - what I call a "dinosaur" spec.
I wanted a modern car that was as simple as possible - no turbo, no automatic boxes, less technology. I love the physical switches for everything, no touchscreens for controls is great.
The car had only done less than 500 miles by the previous owner in about a year, so for me, it feels like a brand new car (never had the brand new smell inside!). I got 4yr warranty (2yr remaining manufacturer, 2yr approved used), so don't have to worry for quite a while. The car was specced
exactly
as I would have done it myself, so I jumped on the opportunity to buy it:
GT Silver
GTS Interior
18-way Adaptive Seats
BOSE
PSP
Bi-xenon PDLS
Light Design Package
Folding Mirrors
ParkAssist + Camera
Two Zone Climate Control
Multifunction GT Sports Steering
Steering column in leather
Sun visors in Race Tex
I'm a long-term BMW customer (which I do not plan to change) having had the following:
316i (E46) (sold)
330Ci (E46, LCI) (own)
340i (F30, LCI) (sold)
M4 Competition (F82, LCI, manual) (sold)
340i (F30, MPPSK) (own)
I've driven most of the BMW M range and some of the Porsche range (997.2 C2S, 992.1 C2, 997.1 GT3RS, 991.2 GT3, 991.2 GT3RS).
Impressions
It's very early days, so a few quick impressions:
Exhaust Sound
: it sounds great from the inside, don't really care about the outside. There's no pops and bangs - love it. My other cars have/had loud pops and they become obnoxious very quickly. In the future, I'll do a drive-by test to hear how the car sounds from the outside.
Gearing
: The long gearing has been written about endlessly but for me, it's a nothingburger. Around town and in normal driving, the car has enough torque for this to not be an issue. During spirited driving, I can put it in 2nd and just focus on everything else - if I really need fast acceleration at super slow speeds, 1st gear is a usable gear.
Practicality
: Much, much less practical than any of my BMWs - space, ingress/egress, filling up, etc. I don't think I would want to put up with the inconveniences as a daily driver.
Manual Gearbox
: Honestly, one of the main reasons to buy the car - what an amazing gearbox. One of the best, period.
Comfort/ride
: Amazing, it rides better than my F30 - less crashy but a bit firmer. It's like pure magic.
Ride Height
: Mostly fine but I have lots of speedbumps on my road and a driveaway at an angle, so I have to approach at specific angles. I still have to worry about where I go and how I approach but so far, no real problems.
The roads are not in great condition right now, so have just been taking the car out on short casual drives. If anyone is in the Sevenoaks area and wants to go for a drive, let me know!
That looks great, there’s something very appealing about that spec, GT Silver with silver wheels, 18 way seats, manual just like I would choose.
Congratulations
I did something similar earlier this year buying my first Porsche. Manual too and agree the shift is fabulous.
Lovely stealth spec, congratulations and enjoy.

Looks great, agree 100% the “long gearing” is a bit of an internet myth.
The tall gearing isn't an internet myth. The fact that you can drive off from a standstill and then exceed legal motorway speeds by 15mph in 2nd gear alone tells you all you need to know. In the Alps and the Pyrenees, you find yourself never changing out of 2nd. 1st is too short and 3rd is too tall.
Don't get me wrong I've driven these in both PDK and manual and would have a manual every time. The car is near perfect but I wish I could have shorter gears everywhere except for the already too short 6th gear.
Lovely car, perfect spec, subtle and classy.
Our first 718 was GT Silver and I think it really suits the shape. I was very tempted to choose it again for our GTS. Silver wheels look great too, shows off the design nicely.
Enjoy!
Thank you all for the kind words

Well done OP, that does indeed look very nice. I think choosing an understated, classy spec for the GTS suits it. Wolf in sheep's clothing (relatively speaking for a Porsche sportscar!).
Been out in mine today, very similar spec to yours except no Power Steering Plus and just the basic seats. Mine's Gentian Blue with Satin Platinum wheels.
Enjoy!
Could anyone on here shed some light on how much the overall running cost of one of these is please?
Looking at spending about £65k on one towards the end of 2024, it will be used daily and will probably cover around 12k miles a year.
I read on some review pages the other day a figure of £1.89 per mile all in. This kind of worries me a bit.
Any answers would be much appreciated.

Tbh, that mileage would be far cheaper in a 2.0.

Ditto. Am not a million miles away and had a Boxster 4.0 until recently. Now have a couple of other new Porsches and always on for local drive with similar friends. PM me if you're on for getting together and having a drive. Will be v good to have a nose round your new beauty
Excellent choice, both car and colour!
I've had mine 8 months now, so far it is proving to be just about the perfect car for me.
I've scribbled my thoughts and experiences with it in a Reader's Cars Thread here

Wow, that's a great write-up M11rph! I love the look of your car without the rear badges, I would have preferred to just have either just "718" or nothing at all like yours.
I've been looking into getting a ferry to Spain to enjoy some nicer roads in the summer, your post will definitely come in handy.
Many thanks! It's definitely worth the trip over if you can find the time.
I specced mine without rear badges, but they can be removed. They are fixed using strong double sided tape, a length of dental floss is the preferred tool for getting between the "badge" and the paintwork and gently removing with a sawing motion. If you make a template from them before removal it would make it easy to reinstall if you had a change of heart.
Enjoy the car, mine induces a smile everytime I start it up.
Lovely car OP. I’m 18 months into 981 GTS ownership, also a phenomenal car IMO. Also very local to Sevenoaks will keep my eyes peeled, and happy for a drive out sometime…
Love these and I’ve had many P cars .
I had a 981 GT4 and the long gearing wasn’t an issue , it doesn’t get in the way of great drives and isn’t as issue on track days. Or at least wasn’t for me .
I think given the state of our roads now they are a perfect Porsche for daily driving and yet it’s also still very capable.
I’ve been looking at used examples . High 50’s can get you into one with some mileage.
I’m a fan enjoy your car
Just to add - I thought more would spec cars with buckets too but seemingly not

Cool, I'll swing by!
Good turn out considering the weather, clash with Bicester Scramble, the salt on the roads and did I mention the weather?
Think we need more of this when the weather improves - good to meet you C3M. Looking forward to a proper drive when the spring comes!
It's been freezing cold over the past two weeks, so I thought I'd write up how to trickle charge the 718 - I saw a lot of confusion across various forums.
Procedure
There are two ways to charge it: through the connections under the bonnet (need to remove cover) or through the 12v socket in the passenger footwell (every car has this, regardless of whether the smoking package has been ordered). The passenger socket is a lot more convenient for me, as I don't have to faff around routing the cable, etc.
Turn on the ignition, so the 12v socket becomes operational (otherwise, it's off)
Plug in the charger into the 12v passenger socket (do not yet turn on the charger)
Turn on the trickle charger (the charging lights should now indicate charging is in progress)
Close the door
Turn off the ignition and lock the car (car detects its being charged, it leaves the 12v socket operational)
Equipment
I've used the CTEK MXS 5.0 (part# 56-975) in AGM mode when charging the 718. You also need the "Indicator Cig Plug" (part# 56-870) for the passenger 12v socket.
Routing the Cable
There are two ways you can do it.
Underneath the door. There's a special groove for the cable, so that it doesn't crease the door seal (it's very flexible, anyhow)
Crack open the window
The door has enough space underneath for the charging cable to pass through easily.
Car looks great op I like the silver on silver, I poked the connector of my ctek out from the top of the bonnet by my windscreen on my gt4 and that did the job.
I connected mine to the battery and 8mm negative post under the bonnet cover.
The plug is poked through the lifting hole and I connect it via a couple of Ctek extension leads, by shutting it in the bonnet rubber.
I also didn’t know about the channel in the door.
GT3Manthey said:
I've got an old 996 and use a Ctek thru the cig lighter .
Assuming you can do that too if you have a cig lighter ?
Yup, cig lighter works as well - I just don't have it (car didn't have the smokers package).
One common complaint about these cars is that CarPlay is wired.
Various forums suggested that the Ottocast is the best device and I can confirm it works brilliantly - absolutely zero lag, instant connection. It's better than my BMW's built-in wireless CarPlay.
I got the Ottocast U2 Air Pro currently reduced from £100 to £55 (I bought through their eBay store "ottomotion"). I ordered on the 29th Jan (Mon) and arrived from China a week later on the 6th Feb (Tues). Highly recommended!

Presumably you plug the box in in the centre console and away you go?
First Sea Lord said:

Yup, exactly - took 2 minutes to set up, it’s tiny and now don’t have to faff around with plugging in the phone each time.
Get the Carlinkit, you can get them off Amazon and they are more reliable and widely-used. I ran it in my Cayman for a year without issues, wireless Carplay just fired up within 10-20 seconds every time.
And yes, just plug it into the usb port in the armrest and forget about it.
In fact, as I've sold the car I still have it so i'll put up an advert on PH. Edit - I also have the full set of black Zunsport grilles and an unused Indoor Cover for this car up for sale on PH too, see the Marketplace forum.

Snap - I picked mine up late last year. I agree with your comments on the car - in particular about the manual gearbox and the ride and handling - they really are outstanding.
It is difficult to find fault with them - they just do everything so well.

Identical twin, amazing!
Our specs are very similar too - I don’t have the GTS interior (went black leather instead) and I have the LEDs, but otherwise identical.
I haven’t seen another one in GT Silver with silver wheels until I saw your post, but I think they are a great combination.

I think the Sport wheels look better than the two alternative designs (Carrera Sport and Turbo) and they really come alive in Silver.

Yeah, I have no idea how the automatic handbrake passed design review! I can never remember the direction and just go "Okay, just do the opposite of how you expect it to work". Why they didn't fix it with the 718 iteration and reverse the direction, I have no idea.

Did you go manual or PDK out of interest?!

I don.t really know the market that well but i'm guessing above list.
Wondering what happens now with ICE cars now production is about to cease in the EU.
Having thought about buying a 718 GTS i ended up buying a 981 GTS Boxster which i'll be collecting next weekend all being well.
Couldn't believe just how much i'd love PDK until i tried it and wanted open top motoring .
I might in a few years go for the 718 GTS although not sure the extra power i'd really benefit from as i'm getting older and my eyesight iis definitely worsening !
Having owned many 911's including GT cars, the Boxster/Cayman platform i think is now perfect for me needs.
I'm on about 5000 miles in my Cayman GTS 4.0, and I absolutely love it still.
Very happy to get back onto PS4S's last weekend, as there's finally a little warmth (or less cold) in the tarmac. I'd completely forgotten how well planted it is on dry tarmac with half-decent tyres. I also find it quite amazing that something so compliant and composed over bumpy roads can still handle quite as well as it does in fast and smooth corners.
I think it's probably the best road car I've ever owned, although the 2 x 718 Cayman 2.0s that I've had before it were pretty close too. 981 GT4 definitely not as good in most ways (certainly not as quick), but has something about it that means I'm keeping it for the foreseeable.

Good to hear and interesting comment on the GT4.
I’m at 1,700 miles after purchasing the car at 500 miles 4 months ago.
I’m still discovering new aspects and it takes a bunch of time for things to sink in. Furthermore, being able to compare against my other cars in a longer term fashion really helps.
I’m actually very surprised and impressed by the engine. We’ve all heard about the response of N/A engines but a quick test drive doesn’t tell the full story.
After enjoying the car for a while now, every turbo car feels laggy. Once you get used to the instant response, your expectations just shift and you can’t escape noticing the lag with turbos.
Unless Porsche backtrack on the whole electrification of the Cayman/Boxster, these cars are last of a breed - mid-engined, manual, naturally aspirated 4 litre flat-six sports cars.

I'm collecting a PDK 981 this Saturday but I just love the size of these cars . Havnt got oversized compared to other marques and the 911 if feels.

Took the 718 for a weekend trip to Belgium. I remember the roads were so smooth once you cross over to France (that was 12yrs ago in my 330Ci) and now with the Cayman, it was such a pleasure.

Is this Agate grey? Looks so much nicer with silver wheels! I’ve seen one in Agate with black wheels and it just doesn’t look right to my eyes!

Opening post indicates it is the best colour... namely GT Silver
. Does look good with the silver wheels, or platinum, or black. GT silver works with everything.
GT Silver, Platinum wheels with a 1000 miles of brake dust...

I didn’t realise that was the OPs car!
I had a 991 in GT Silver but hated it in the end - lovely in the sunshine but found it really dull and almost brown muddy edge to it on overcast days. That said it did work well with the Espresso interior!
Just done a 500mile road trip to take the wife to a 3 hour meeting in Norfolk. Any excuse to stretch the legs on the GTS. Car now stands at 16075 miles and loving it. Averaged 35.5 mpg and i wasn't lenient on the loud pedal.

I've decided to treat myself to my first Porsche as I've been a long-time lurker. I've just bought a Cayman GTS 4.0 with the manual gearbox - what I call a "dinosaur" spec.
After 8 months of ownership, with a heavy heart, I've now sold the car - it wasn't meant to be. The main reason is that I didn't fall in love with the car - the emotion/drama wasn't here.
I'd say the biggest reason, for me, was the (lack of quality) exhaust sound. I've realised just how much good sound matters to me and the 4.0 engine just doesn't sound good. There are two aspects - volume and tone. I care about the sound when cruising between 2-3k rpm as that's where I spend most of the time.
And the valves on these cars always close between 1.8k - 3.8k (in sport), the car becomes super quiet. Potential solution - valve controller or keep the valves open (collar mod). With the valves open, it actually sounds reasonable in terms of volume but I didn't want to void warranty by installing a valve controller. The problem with keeping the valves open all the time is that the drone is headache inducing if you drive for any period of time.
The nuclear option would have been a SoftTronic remap which reprograms the exhaust button to actually do what you expect - when turned on, valves are permanently open at any rpm. That's how the car should have been from the factory (I'd assume it's due to regs?). I do have another car, pre-Sept 2018, with an OEM catback valved exhaust which works this way - press button, valves open permanently - it's brilliant.
And then there's the actual tone itself - not great. The solution seems to be the JCR Titanium Exhaust but at £6k + warranty issues, it's not the route for me.
In the end, my relationship with the car soured and I didn't enjoy driving it. So it had to go and I don't miss it.
Things that have been great - the manual gearbox, analog dials, practicality, comfort. But it didn't stir the heart.
So, what's next for me? Nothing post-GPF/OPF, so pre-Sept 2018. The only cars from Porsche that I like the sound of, during normal driving, are the 3.8 engined ones - 991.1 / 981 GT4+Spyder. No matter what I do, it would have to be the back catalog, those filters and regs have ruined sound for good.
I'd be interested to hear about the best sounding post-filter cars - is there anything out there? Not necessarily sports cars.
I think you are in the minority with you views. Not sure what you expect but read any well respected review and you clearly are out of touch. Not sure what you are wanting but good luck in finding it.

And it's precisely those well respected reviews that convinced me to go for the GTS 4.0. I'm sharing my perspective of the car and it doesn't matter if I'm in the minority, majority or what other people think.
With the wisdom of hindsight, I would have gone for a 981 GT4/Spyder.
My advice to anyone buying a 718 - make sure you test drive both 981 and 718 versions to pick the
right car for you

Totally agree, to me the sound is as much of the package as the rest, no harm in that at all.
The later cars do sound bad compared to the earlier ones for sure, it would properly put me of the thought of one.

Yeah, agreed - there's little doubt the 718 is a better car than the 981 in every aspect except one - sound.
For some of us, a sports car without a great sound that stirs emotions fails at its primary purpose.
For others, sound is not so important and the 718 is a great package.

Having had a 981 GT4 for the last 6 years, and a manual Cayman GTS 4.0 alongside it for just coming up to a year (and 8000 miles), your posts remind me of a friend asking if they are different enough for it to be worthwhile owning both. They absolutely are!
If you haven't been in a 981 GT4 lately, as well as noisier, they are all around less refined. Controls are a fair bit heavier, especially brakes need a big prod when cold, but clutch noticeably heavier too. PCM seems old-fashioned in comparison, most everything else pretty similar. To me, the 981s are so much prettier, especially around the rear lights. You will also notice a relative lack of low end response and mid-range torque from the 981 GT4, but much smoother behaviour in traffic. The GTS 4.0 is noticeably faster than the 981 GT4, but the engine is somehow less "sweet", and of course the 981 sounds amazing in comparison.
I feel very priveleged to have been able to own both, as they are both fabulous cars in their own slightly idiosyncratic and individual ways. Sounds to me like you've made a good choice for your preferences.
Liam
[Just saw your follow up post. Pre-PPF engines drive more nicely. And for whatever reason, I will possibly never have the same emotional attachment to any car that I do my 981 GT4 - somehow a very loveable car! A real shame it has to go, while I'll keep the GTS 4.0, but sometimes we have to be just a bit sensible about things...]

Liam, it's great to hear from someone owning both cars at the same time!
Fully agreed regarding the 4.0 engine and its drivability - the low-end torque makes it so effortless.
I have no regrets spending 8 months with the beautiful GTS 4.0 as it allowed me to learn more about myself and what I truly value.
As you say, both of them are amazing cars in their own right.

Interesting post .
I'm a huge fan of the 981 platform having had a GT4 back in 2015 hence why I bought a BGTS 981.
I took my car to my local OPC last weekend for a key reprogram and the service lady there drove the car to an offsite facility to do the job.
I was wandering around outside the dealership watching cars pulling in and out including a rather lovely 718 GT4 when the service lady blatted my car back which I could hear in the distance.
She got out and said, " this car sounds great, I do miss the sound of the non filtered cars".
I did consider a 718 4.0 and the reviews are great but I'm very happy with my 981 and can't see me changing anytime soon.
C3m it depends on what car you are after for noise I suppose really.
I have never driven a 4.0 but can understand your comments. I had a 981 GT4. It did sound good but unfortunately I didn’t like it and found it boring. Despite the popular reviews. Just shows everyone is different.
If you want noise how about a tvr? I have a V6 Exige now and it sounds a lot better than a Toyota should! But obviously all subjective.

So you have to read a well respected review to tell you what you should think of a car you own and drive?
The only opinion that matters is the one of a person who has bought and drives a car, who cares what anyone else thinks.
I am tempted to say the best sounding car on the road is the Lambo/Audi V10 but unfortunately I have not read a review on either so wouldn't know for sure.
Re the noise, having come from a 981 GTS into a 718 4.0 GTS I was initially really disappointed by the more muted aural experience (I think it still sounds lovely its just a lot quieter).
What I would say though is that the car gets NOTICEABLY more vocal with miles. I'm now on 19k miles from new and its chalk and cheese compared to those first few thousand miles. Sounds great, right through the rev range, including the bottom end, and I've got to say I love it (albeit I'd prob still prefer the the 981 sound given the choice!).
Noise aside, the 4.0 is a big step up from the 3.4 though, its a real peach.

Yeah, absolutely.

The V6 Exiges have been on my list, I should try to check these out.
I wonder how the V6 Emiras sound - my understanding is that they don't have GPF filters because Lotus is a low volume manufacturer and the these regulations don't apply to them.

Yeah, it was that 1.8k-3.8k rev range where the valves are closed when it becomes quiet.
With the valves open, I was happy with the volume but there was no way of keeping the valves open with a button that didn't create warranty problems.
I'd imagine in 10yrs when the cars get older, just mapping the ECU to get rid of the closing in the mid revs would be the way to go.

I've heard the same from multiple sources - they do get louder, apparently the GPF deteriorates over time.
The performance of the engine itself is excellent, the low-down torque combined with high revs, no complaints there.
Not sure on the mileage of your car but mine is 3 years old in March 25 and currently has 16500 milea on the clock and it sound great.
As an example I left the toll booth on the M6 toll road a few days ago with some 'spirit' and it sounded like the wrath of God!!! So much so my wife shouted 'Holy SH!T'.
I don't think there are any bad choices here, just differing shades of the overall Cayman experience.
I've owned a 987S, then a 981 GT4 and now a 718 GTS 4.0,
Personally I'm very happy with the GTS 4.0 but it would be even better if it sounded like the 981 and steered like the 987, and also had the 987's proper handbrake.
I'm just thankful that I've been able to experience these cars for well over 100,000 miles in total.

With the benefit of hindsight, if you had to choose again between the 981 GT4 or GTS 4.0 which way would you go? (usage brief would be wanting something that feels & looks special, no track use, weekend drives, occasional trip to Highlands/Wales/Spain)

Definitely the GTS 4.0 with that usage brief, unless 'looks special' is the prime consideration.
In my opinion the 981 definitely looks special, but the GTS 4.0 beats it hands-down as a fast road car.
I blew hot and cold with the GT4: on the right road in the right weather it's a fantastic thing. Tracked it four times and it was good, but not necessarily any more fun than tracking another Cayman. I tracked my 987.1 S more than 10 times and shamefully I've yet to take the GTS 4.0 on track but I have complete confidence that it will be a lot of fun in that environment.
The GTS 4.0 is still quite a firm-riding car on its -20mm Sports PASM as standard but it's notably more supple than the GT4, and it's nowhere near as low at the front so negotiating slopes is much less of a hassle. And it's really fast in the real world.

Thanks for that, really interesting. A firm riding car is not a problem, currently in a Cayman R with buckets and have no issue with the ride.
