I've just fitted the 997.2 GT3 shifter to my 996.1.

Speak to a good indy like 9e they've fitted every version to these turbos.

I used Alex's SSK and it is very accurate, but I found it a little too much effort.

Suggestion
I've actually not used the car since fitting the new one so can't really give you that much insight into what it's like to use compared to the standard 997, but the standard 997 one has been fitted to my car since I bought it in 2013 and was very easy to use.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everybody,
Bit of a newbie and first post as looking for advice.
I have a 996 turbo with a sloppy gearshift which I'd like to improve. After reading so much praise about Alex's SSK I reached out to him about purchasing one.
Then a few days ago a tried a car with a SSK fitted (numeric with cables on a very track focused GT2) and didn't like the shift. Would be amazing when really going for it probably.
Did what everybody said it would, accurate, rifle bolt but feels like would be tiresome on a road car. I use it mainly at weekends for a bit of spirited driving but unlikely to track the car.
I also tried a standard 997 and felt this would be more like I was looking for, more accurate, slightly shorter throw but still feels like would be ok for normal driving.
I explained to Alex my concerns and he said the SSK kits take a bit if getting used to but they are great after a few miles and would blow the 997 shifter away but he didn't want t to sound like a salesman and said I should ask the forums to see if anybody can offer comparisons between the options I've tried and Alex's?
Many thanks
Richard
I'd go with 997 turbo short shift but if you want something more rifle bolt like 997 GT2 version which has less rubber. Never tried the Alex SSK. I have 997 turbo shortshift. Doesnt actually make the gear change any easier or faster in my view. I prefer the shorter throw but if anything it makes first to second a bit more notchy especially when cold. Speak to a good indy like 9e they've fitted every version to these turbos.
Love your turbo :thumb:
I've just fitted the 997.2 GT3 shifter to my 996.1.
What I removed (which was fitted to the car when i bought it) was the standard 997 shifter (997.424.010.00) which to me was actually a decent shifter, fine in traffic and a good feel when going through the gears, I just fancied a change and was told the GT3 shifter had a nice mechanical feel so thought I'd give it a go.

I've never used one of Alex's SS Kits so couldn't say what it feels like in comparison.
I bought a 996 Turbo with 180,000 km on the clock, and still the original shifter (along with most other parts
). The shifting was vague to say the least...
Alex's kit sorted it out and now the shifting is smooth and precise, not tiresome in the slightest.
I can't make a comparison with other shifters, but I can guarentee it will be a massive improvement over what you have now.
(Beautiful car BTW
)
If you want a few quid for your 997 shifter, drop me a pm.
I used Alex's SSK and it is very accurate, but I found it a little too much effort.
In the end I used all his bushings and used them with the OEM shifter.
It now feels slick, but really easy to shift, I spent along time getting the alignment exactly how I want it, so each gear is where I expect it to be without thinking.
The standard 997 shifter is 15% shorter, rather than 30% most SSK shifters are, which I feel would be a good compromise, and with Alex's bushings etc. should make it feel like the 997.2 GT3 shifter.
I have a 997 shift, as you say, shorter than 996 and not too short. Alex modified it for me so I have the best of both worlds, rifle bolt action with a reasonable throw length. Ask him whether he's willing to do another......
Thanks for all the advice folks
I've bit the bullet and ordered one of Alex's kits.
I tried another 997 yesterday which felt nice but different again from the previous one I tried so I'm inconclusive on them.
Once fitted I'll try report back.
I am pleased with my short shift kit and was also surprised at the positive effect of new engine mounts on the gear change. I can not remember which went it first but would recommend both.
