POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went for a drive a few weeks ago around the North Puget Sound. Had a blast for the first hour until a truck that I was following on Highway 2 outside Everett threw up some rocks going about 60mph. Its a two lane highway and I had no time to react and nowhere to go. I was about 5 car lengths back in the right lane and they still bounced off the highway and hit all the wrong places. Two rocks cracked my windshield all the way across above the front wiper cowl. Another took out a headlight. If you've taken one of your headlights out, you know how thick that front lens is. No idea. Thankfully nothing worse happened. New OEM Windshield - $1147.13 New OEM Headlight - $3430.05 Total - $4577.18 Check out your insurance coverages when you can. This incident ended up only costing my $250 deductible and a few weeks of sitting in the garage moping. The windshield took 6 days to arrive from I don't know where. There are exactly zero new headlights (outside of eBay or junkyards) in the US currently and even those go for a premium ($1000+). Porsche of Bellevue had to help my body shop order direct from Germany which took 16 days to arrive. All of this after the 2-3 days of processing the claim putting my car out of commission for about 3 1/2 weeks. Consider this a freak non-accident but still a warning. Make sure you're covered. I'll put up some photos soon.

POST 3Original post

^ Yeah that is nuts. Glad it is fixed properly. Honestly I'm surprised they paid for OEM parts at that price. Who is the insurance company? Most companies have caps on windshields (In Michigan that is) some have a super low $500 cap, other $1k and some more, obviously it depends on the car, but they'll push the non OEM replacement glass or you can pay the difference out of pocket on top of the deductible.

POST 4Original post

Every time I've gotten the itch to replace our headlights (MkI Xenon) that's what I've found (none in stock and long lead time). If that was the price for just one, then the price has gone way up (last I checked it was about $3k for the pair) which will nix my plans for finally doing it when I repaint the thing

POST 5Original post

"New OEM Windshield - $1147.13" Eventually this exorbitant price will be reflected in Premium rates increasing ? I am doing this job this weekend with a mobile service. The quote is less than $500. I am surprised. Will report back.

POST 6Original post

Say whaaaa???? 3480 for 1 headlight??? or 2? If I recall correctly they used to be 12-1300 years ago.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 13949246

I came here to say a similar thing. Fixing a small chip is like 800-100 bux. new windshield is 500ish installed. I think ill just wait and see it the chip gets bigger given the cost of new vs costs of repair ratio.

POST 8Original post

But if you have Comprehensive with a $500 deductible .......

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 13949374

I dont subscribe to full coverage insurance on toys, it doesnt make much sense to me. The money saved is better used else where for the car fund.

POST 10Original post

You'll change your mind when you have a no-fault accident and the other party is 'difficult and well represented'. Collision-only gives the Insurance company a litany of loopholes to weasel out of doing/paying anything. Collision-only is cheap until you need to make a claim. The incremental cost is usually small if you have a good record. YEMV

POST 11Original post

to each their own. driving around here is a tad different than LA. I got a dash cam forward and reverse and it is hard to argue no fault with video evidence front and back. That said the minor risk still makes more sense than throwing away money on full coverage for a toy for me, not for all im sure, but for me it doesnt make sense. EDIT: Ga is an AT-FAULT state as in CA. Pretty damn rare to get a no-fault wreck.

POST 12Original post

I just got a new windshield in November. $0 deductible for comprehensive, State Farm in PA. My glass guy said SF paid for original parts because there isn't an aftermarket generic. Took weeks as they had to source from Germany.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13949384

I saw a guy listing a freshly restored 914 for just a few grand on the local CL not too long ago. He was in an accident right after the resto and didn't have full coverage. What about uninsured motorists? I find that a limited use, agreed value collector car policy is about half the cost of what full coverage would cost. And at least for me, the difference between full and liability only coverage cost with my standard ins carrier is actually pretty small. I'd ask your agent, you might be surprised.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13949455

Uninsured motorist is pretty much standard coverage around here for most people (me included) and is pretty cheap (20 bones/yr).

$2495 each at Suncoast. https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X6HLX1L.html

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13949504

These have to be the most expensive headlights I've ever seen. Thankfully I didn't have to worry about the price as my insurer, American Family Insurance, was covering it. Although Suncoast, Sunset, or Sonnen usually have a few laying around all of their current stock is zero. We called them. On the dealer end there is a nationwide Porsche inventory system that also says its zero.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13949504

Interesting, for the MkI Xenons they want $3495 ( http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X6LITRONIC.html ). But you can get them individually for $1650 for a total of $3300 ( http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X6HLG1L.html and http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/9X6HLG1R.html ) Maybe I should order a pair (individually) before they read this post...

POST 19Original post

Personally for a cracked windshield and headlight, I would just fix it out of pocket. Its not worth having the raised premiums -- for me. But then, I wouldn't buy a new headlight, i'll just souce one off eBay and get a local windshield guy to come out.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 13949595

Maybe not for windshield only.

POST 22Original post

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 13949634

If it is done as an uninsured motorist or you are not at fault and they can go after the other person/insurance, then it shouldn't raise your premium. It's when you do bad things that your premium goes up.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 13949827

But that's not what we're discussing here. Road debris resulting in cracked headlight/windshield will fall under comprehensive. Comprehensive claims generally will raise your rates, may not be immediate, but may occur when you renew your policy.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 13949992

I'm not saying that's impossible. But I've run 3 comprehensive claims through State Farm and my rates haven't changed (or if they have it's been pocket change). One was a windshield for an old SUV, Safelite glass repair. One was the 911. The third was a few years ago, giant sheet of ice from the top of a truck flew off and mashed the windshield and roof of a Volvo XC90; repair bill was pretty close to totaling the car; upwards of $5K. YMMV, and I have some pretty extensive lines with them so my experience might not translate, but I've been a really happy State Farm customer as a result of these experiences.

POST 26Original post

Consumer Reports - this months edition confirms this ! stan23 said : Not -at -fault "Comprehensive claims generally will raise your rates, may not be immediate, but may occur when you renew your policy"

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 13950003

It may have a lot to do with your geographical location. I'm thinking if you live in a major metropolitan city with lots of comprehensive claims - then the chances of raised rates are higher. Where I live, it's a sure bet that if I filed a comp claim, my rates will go up at next renewal. Just recently, some rogue rocks hit my wife's new '17 XC90 T8, marring the windshield. Decided to just live with it and will probably swap windshield out of pocket when it gets worse. There is nothing magical about insurance companies, they are a for profit business. They are not in the business of paying out without getting something in return - which is your premiums. A $4500 comprehensive claim, for sure they will be knocking on your door for more money next time you renew. What's worse, you can't just change insurance companies, as that claim will follow you. Insurance companies share the same claim history profiles.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 13950025

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure my agent has said explicitly that my rates won't change. Maybe I'm paying more up front to compensate. Dunno. Extrapolating insurance experiences across state lines is especially difficult, as our resident insurance expert will readily concede.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 13950048

Next time, ask this question instead, "will my rates change at next renewal, and if so, what percentage is based off my comprehensive claim?" Insurance agents are very well versed on what and how they say things -- usually giving you a very good sense of security. Of course YMMV.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 13950025

May be, but like DTM I've made Comp claims to both Progressive and USAA with no impact to my premiums. Unlike DTM, I don't live in the sticks (D.C. burbs in VA). Dunno. Maybe it's time for new insurance?

POST 31Original post

Yeah, I don't have to ask that question. I have a budget spreadsheet that goes back 12 years. The premium for every car I own is unchanged by any meaningful amount (less than $1.00/month) across that entire time. In that time the invoiced amount for comprehensive repairs exceeds $6500.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source posts: 13950102, 13950116

I switch insurance companies every few years--when I start to feel the rates have become unreasonable. Have had all the bigs ones; State Farm, AAA, Progressive, Geico, etc.. Never made any claims outside of the occasional windshield replacement. Never an at fault accident. As I mentioned earlier, it's probably my geographic location, and age--i'm probably a bit younger than most folks here. Interesting, still I would take a closer look at the rate when the next renewal comes up. May be surprising.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 13949342

Not for OEM glass. Chinese glass, yes.

POST 34Original post

Just had mine replaced here in CA. Cost $956.18 but I had a $100.00 deductible. Said it was OEM, label says Pilkington and from what I was able to find is that Pilkington makes the glass for Porsche with their name on it. Not sure if there is any difference? Pilkington is a German Company.

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Didn't realize this would spark a coverage/insurance debate. Was hoping to simply provide a PSA on the cost of replacements. Every one of us is going to have different situations and ideals about insurance. There are far too many factors involved for this to be a straight forward internet discussion (driving record, policy limits, credit, insurer, location, age, etc.) I'll give an update if my premiums should change but if I'm honest I don't expect them to.

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's some quick shots of the broken headlight. The lens is missing pieces as it cracked across the middle and fell apart. Before: After:

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 13950722

I apologize for derailing your thread. Your car looks great, and i'm glad it's fixed. There's nothing like a new windshield!

POST 38Original post

In purchasing a 996 I knew I needed a pretty liberal budget for mechanical repairs. I have good insurance and would surely be covered for a situation like this. I cannot help but wonder what is the justification for the high prices on these parts. They do not seem to be able to be explained away by engineering or being 'handmade'. I am starting to rethink if I want to open up myself to these type of expenses.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 13950188

It was for Pilkington glass.

POST 40Original post

POST 41Original post

Hi @vandersmith, do you still have the broken headlight? I'm designing a DRL setup and need a testbed.

POST 42Original post

Now you have a car with one new and one old headlight. The two will old differently. I would have asked the insurance company for a good used one instead. Regardless, don't throw out the cracked headlight. Someone might be looking for one because theirs has a cracked housing. Swapping out the lenses is not that difficult. Just need and oven and some time.
