My '06 Cayman S has only 5k mi, and I've owned it for only a few hundred of those miles. I suspected something was amiss when it began with the hard shifting into 1st gear...also, a very low clutch take-up point...consulted local dealer who advised having it flat-bedded to them (40 miles away). Just got it back today with paperwork describing replaced master and slave cylinders. The transmission was removed and the pressure plate bolts were found to normal. The car drives much better now; clutch take-up point is where I expect it to be, and shifting is a real pleasure. The dealer's service was excellent; car was delivered back to my home (40 mi away), even though car was purchased elsewhere.
Slave/master cylinder replacement at 550 miles
I was just told that my new Cayman S has the same problem. The car was impossible to shift into 1st or reverse. Thought it might be the pressure plate bolts, but the dealer said it was the hydraulic system. They pulled the trans and said everything else is OK. In fact, they said the system just needed to be bled. Seeing that the car only has 550 miles on it, I've asked them to provide some sort of compensation (I was going to buy a roof rack, so I suggested that) - I mean really, 550 miles and the car's out for 4 days? The Porsche rep was civil but thinks that fixing the car in 4 days is good enough (I do have a rental that they are paying for.) Regardless, the car is so damn good that I'm just pissed because I don't have it.
Hope this just a fluke.
Hope my next post is more positive.
07 Cayman S
My dealer told me the same thing. They need to change the master and slave cylinders, but they don't have the parts. Will need to wait for about two weeks for parts to arrive. I am doubting their diagnosis and think that the pressure plate is the problem, but the mechanic is sticking to his opinion. Will have to wait and see.
The clutch has lost its original smoothness in engagement and disengagement. I can feel, through the clutch pedal, abnormal friction especially when shifting at high RPMs. I've also noticed abnormal clutch smell, even after relaxed slow drives.
Your suspicions may be correct. After telling me it was the hydraulics, it turned out to be the pressure plate after all. Still no response from Porsche. Regardless, now that I have a proper clutch, the car is fantastic.
My 07 Cayman is awaiting recovery for what looks like a clutch problem.
Car went in 2 months ago, 2K miles, when it would not go into first gear. Dealer said it was me, greased the linkages and said all was well.
Last week, could not select any gear a couple of times followed by cluch juddering and not engaging correctly.
Sunday, sudden sound like metal in a washing machine, followed by a high pitch howl ! I managed to get off the road and the noise stopped as I turned left. Drove home very carefully, only a couple of miles, and the only symptom at present is a sound like you are running you finger over a glass rim when I turn left.
I am expecting the whole clutch mechanism will need to be replaced, not bad with 4K on the clock !
Dont like the sound of this thread or where its going with a reliability issue on clutches, including new 07 ones.... I need to stop reading peoples problems and scaring myself before mine has arrived
