Today, I started the car and drove off ... noticed no sound coming from the speakers. It was running on the CDC; the display showed a CD playing, turning the volume changed the display on the radio, but no sound. I switched to FM, then AM, toggled the mute (TP) on/off, switched the radio off, then on, cycled through the FM, AM, CDC, no sound.
Got to my destination, pulled the fuse panel and checked all the relevant fuses ... all okay. Started the car, sound! Searched for similar problems; I see where some say it's the key; some have had their radio replaced; some, like me resolved it by just restarting the car. I don't like electrical gremlins; they're the kind the dealer will say "no trouble found" or "could not duplicate".
Oh well, let's wait and see if it happens again.
I have had the same problem 2 or 3 times now since November. Nothing I seem to do can get the sound to come out when this occurs. Nor have I been able to figure out what causes the problem. The good news is that it always corrects itself the
next
time I start the car. The bad news is, that I always seem to notice it at an inconvenient time to pull over, shut off the car and re-start it.
Both of you guys have
Bose
I presume?
Bose
sound failure is a common problem on
Boxster
987's and since the audio parts are the same, it probably carries over to the
Cayman
. There is a TSB for it for the
Boxster
in which the solution is either a software update or replacing the amplifier with a newer part number.
No
Bose
for me; just the Sound Package Plus (the extra speakers).
Update: No sound again today. Just happened to be near the dealer so I dropped in and they took the car right in to the service area and reprogrammed the radio. Said if it happens again they'll replace it.
Meanwhile, I was looking at all the new cars that came in. The GT Silver is sure nice; might have to go that way
next
time.
gtkyl, that is a strange issue. Glad they're addressing it assertively.

Then I found the mute button! He he!
Same Issue
I have the same exact issue. I have the Bose premium sound package. This past week after I started the car, the display said CD but no sound. I turned off the stereo and turned it on several times. Then finally sound came out.
cd
I'm having exactly the same problem in my '07 Cayman. I just dropped the car off at Rusnak Pasadena, I'll post the outcome.
cd
Rusnak Pasadena seems to have fixed my CD player today.
Directly from the R.O. "diagnosis revealed internal problem with CD player radio. R&R CD player read and write coding 91241900-.60...91249590-0.00"
Anyone have the denison installed and is it likely the dealer will blame it on the denison?
