Suggestion

A point worth remembering would be to state that you want a factory windscreen when you are getting them replaced. These are usually Securit brand and will be stamped on the bottom centre or left of the screen itself. They fit a whole lot better than the Chinese knock offs that most insurance companys try to have fitted.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone know if it is possible to polish light scratches out of the windscreen? I have only succeded in making it slightly worse so far by using something too abrasive. Any information on what to use and how to go about it would be much appreciated. Terry

POST 2Original post

I use this stuff: <Zaino Z-12> They say it will remove light scratches - I just use it as a cleaner. If you would like to give it a try next time you are passing, let me know.

POST 3Original post

I've got an area of scratches in my passenger window which I'd love to remove. I'd be interested to hear how you get on!

POST 4Original post

I've got a few scratches on mine as well. Not from the wipers, but up and down as if someone was drying the car with a gritty cloth [:'(] I didn't find the Zaino Glass cleaner & polish helped much, but I can highly recommmend it for a deep-cleaning of the glass [8D]

POST 5Original post

You need Jeweler's Rouge (look for suppliers on eBay) and a small high-speed mop. Something like a Dremel is perfect.

POST 6Original post

But does that not cause a small distortion in the patch of glass you polish? Or there is this stuff, specifically marketed as windscreen scratch polish http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8109&frostProductName=Windscreen%20Scratch%20Repair%20Kit&catID=20&frostCat=Glass&frostSubCat=&subCatID =

POST 7Original post

You'd have to spend a really long time in one place to do that.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the feedback. I will give the windsceern scratch polish a go and see if it works. I will let you know how I get on. Terry

POST 9Original post

I just caught sight of this thread in passing and it occurred to me that there is a company called Glas-Weld ( http://www.glasweld.co.uk/ ) who not only repair chips and cracks in windscreens but also can polish wiper scores and the like. The chip repairs are usually done free of charge without excess payment under your insurance but I don't know if the scratches can be repaired on the same basis. Got to be worth asking though. Regards Dave

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I tried contacting Glasweld as suggested by Computamedic, I was told they did offer a windscreen polishing service and that a technician would contact me - I am still waiting! Eventually I decided to order a Windscreen Polishing Kit from ABC Polishing, they can be found at http://abcpolishing.co.uk The kit was £21.50 plus postage. It arrived within 4 days of ordering and comprises an abrasive powder, a polishing powder and 2 polishing mops for an electric drill. It worked pretty well and the end result is good. The scratches that I had were not too deep but there are other kits available for deeper scratches. Thanks for all the suggestions. Terry

POST 11Original post

The side and rear glasses are all zone toughened the front screen is laminated and has had no heat treatment. You may be able to remove very lite scuffs with car cutting compound or basso but be careful not to press too hard.Be very careful to stay away from any cracks or stone bruises on the front screen as added pressure may cause them to move further.Rule of thumb is if you can run your finger nail across the scratch and feel a definate recess in the glass then its probably too late. A point worth remembering would be to state that you want a factory windscreen when you are getting them replaced. These are usually Securit brand and will be stamped on the bottom centre or left of the screen itself. They fit a whole lot better than the Chinese knock offs that most insurance companys try to have fitted.

POST 12Original post

Thats a really useful bity of information there - thanks very much

POST 13Original post

Be careful! I had a scratch polished out and ended up with lens effect right in my field of vision. It was a weird effect. Had to get a new screen.

POST 14Original post

I think they must have dwelled to long on the one patch possibly due to a really deep scratch. Normal wiper scores should polish out with jewlers rouge. I used it where a girlfriend with a big effing diamond ring used to scratch the glass while messing with her hair (she never admitted it, but you could tell from the scratches how it happened).. I also used it when i had a wiper blade go off walkabout during rain, causing the arm to scratch the glass for about 4 strokes until I fumbled for the wiper stalk.
