Suggestion
It's good to check the tires with an external gauge at every fill up and before any "spirited" driving.

Only real advantage is compressed gases are dryer from being compressed to 5000 psi, but you get the same advantage filling from a scuba tank, which is also filled off a dry 5000 psi cascade.

Might also try the relearning function on the TPMS after you've filled the tires to the correct value.

When you check the tire pressure the old-fashioned way, with a gauge on the valve stem, you are reading relative pressure - the differential between the pressure in the tire and the pressure outside the tire.

Nitrogen won't affect the TPMS, as your air is already 80% nitrogen, and lots of misconceptions re: use of nitrogen not varying as much with temperature changes, no oxidation of components, etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It also will show the tire temp and how many psi the tire is off adjusted for temp.It has worked good and a lot cheaper than trying to retrofit the Porsche system.
Drove about 150 miles yesterday on good roads. Put the key in this AM & the TP indicator showed the left rear low. Checked both rears & fronts with my dial tire gauge. All showed PSI at spec. Checked after driving 60 miles this AM. All with-in 1 lb of opposite side. Indicator still goes on at start up. Have a dealer appointment for Monday. Your experiences or thoughts please. Thx.
Old dude, I haven't put many miles on my car yet, but I can't get TP readings anything close to what my pressure gauge reads. I wish the thing weren't even on the car! 987f
From another post on TPMS "The system itself never really knows what the actual "relative" pressure is - meaning, the differential between outside (ambient) temperature, and pressure inside the tire. The sensor is only INSIDE the tire. When you check the tire pressure the old-fashioned way, with a gauge on the valve stem, you are reading relative pressure - the differential between the pressure in the tire and the pressure outside the tire. The gauge reads zero before you put it on the tire, it does not read 13.5 PSI, which is the absolute air pressure of the atmosphere surrounding the tire." It is meant to be a warning system (and operates pretty much real time according to the supplier- see the files section) not a tool for inflation. Hope that helps. That said it could be a TPMS module or sender problem so let us know.
Mine is always showing the right side to be one or two psi below the left side...I fired up my compressor, and got out my guages...both guages showed the same pressure right and left...I'd like to rip the thing out by the roots...can the PIWIs turn it off?
My TPMS varies from time to time. I use TPMS only as a frame of reference or a general status of the tires. Nothing substitutes for a good quality external tire pressure gauge. It's good to check the tires with an external gauge at every fill up and before any "spirited" driving.
I had a similar issue recently. The TPMS will not agree with the external gauge due to gauge accuracy and what Santa Fe mentioned about Gauge vs. Absolute pressure, etc. I ended up going to about 3-4 psi above spec to get rid of the TPMS error message. I think I went to 36 psi front and 40 psi rear on the external gauge to get the TPMS to read within its 'normal' range.
I have an aftermarket system, Smartire system. The reading I have on the display is the same as my tire gauge. It also will show the tire temp and how many psi the tire is off adjusted for temp.It has worked good and a lot cheaper than trying to retrofit the Porsche system.
Thx for your input. I've always checked my tires on a regular basis with a gauge, but seeing the indicator light on all the time is a pain in the butt. Will post a follow up after dealer checks it.
Checked this AM, indicator still shows low left rear. Checked all tires with gauge. All at correct PSI. Inflated both rears to 40 PSI & bleed down to 36. Indicator now off. Damn tech head Germans! Still going to dealer on Monday & get their opinion on it.
Might also try the relearning function on the TPMS after you've filled the tires to the correct value. Might resolve the issue (did on mine when I picked it up originally from the dealer -- they checked the tires, weren't low, and did a relearn -- been fine since).
I have been having a nightmare with the TPMS sensors on my aftermarket wheels. I got the sensors directly from Suncoast. Everytime I start the car it shows that the left front is -4 pounds. I reset the TPMS and it shows 30lbs like it should. Turn it off and the thing reads -4 add air. I HATE this system.
deanabmf, does it only happen to the one tire? If so it could be the sending unit or antenna in that wheel that is bad. My readings do not match my regular guage (for reasons explained earlier are not expected to) but are consistent between themselves. The difference between the TPMS and guage is the same in all four.
Santa Fe, Yes it is just on the left front wheel. Shows a flat on startup every single time. Run it through the reset and it will be fine as long as I am running. Shut the car off and restart...flat again. The individual pressure readings are pretty consistant, off about 3 to 4 pounds or so compared to my guage.
I think it is a bad sender as well. The problem is I am going to have to take it to Porsche and pay to get it replaced as they are not stock wheels. The senders are supposed to be Porsche and Tomas from Absolute Motoring ordered them directly from Suncoast for my HRE's.
I now have the same problem. I filled my tires with Nitrogen. Ever since TPMS acting weird. Right rear shows 0.3 less last couple of days. Tire gauge says all tire pressures on check. Drives me nuts. 6800 miles on the car.
Deanabmf, probably worth asking Suncoast for a replacement. It sure sounds like a sensor. Could it not be properly installed? There is a picture in the files section that indicates the proper installation and parts.
Same happened to me
I had the same error, rear left tire, minus 4. After a week the rear right had the same reading. Three weeks later disappered by itself.
Nitrogen won't affect the TPMS, as your air is already 80% nitrogen, and lots of misconceptions re: use of nitrogen not varying as much with temperature changes, no oxidation of components, etc. Only real advantage is compressed gases are dryer from being compressed to 5000 psi, but you get the same advantage filling from a scuba tank, which is also filled off a dry 5000 psi cascade. In the absence of water vapor, the oxidation from 20% O2 is negligible.
TPMS saved us from an ugly night last weekend, as shortly after leaving to go to dinner then see my brother-in-law's band, we heard an abrupt "tic tic tic tic tic" in about a second, then the sound stopped. A quick visual inspection failed to show the source, but as we began driving, I noticed my right rear tire pressure was 2 lbs lower than it had been, while the other 3 were increasing as the tires warmed up from driving. You guessed it, we picked up a nail, and were able to deal with it BEFORE leaving the car parked at a restaurant only to discover it AFTER dinner and thus possibly miss the show!
As SantaFe is fond of pointing out, the actual numbers are less inportant than the trends. It does sound like afew people either have a bad wheel module or a bad antenna.
Greg
All tire pressures still holding at spec. Went to the dealer yesterday. Service manager said that TPS is an on going complaint from owners & that the 07's are more so. Tech told me that they have not replaced any sensors as yet. Just have to use the tire gauge & live with it.
Santa Fe, thanks for the info in the files section but my wheels have a "hidden valve stem" system on them and I can't use the regular in-valve sensor. Mine had to be banded to the center of the wheel. I am going to try to get a replacement sensor but this is getting ridiculous. Now my right rear is acting up, telling me flat tire yet reading 34 pounds like it always does. Seems the warning lights go off after a few minutes. I don't know what's going to happen when the law goes into effect that all cars must have this by the '08 models. Dealers are going to be flooded with warranty repairs on this stupid system. I didn't ask for it and I don't want it.
I just posted in another thread so I don't want to repeat myself but my left rear TPMS acted up all weekend on a long weekend drive. Now it is working again.
