Reported cause

It turned out that although the wheels and tyres were perfectly balanced on the rig, ie rotating in free air, the problem was that one tyre was not perfectly round and had a slight high spot.

It's possible that one or of the wheels has been damaged, or the tyres have worn unevenly and one or more has been fitted the 'wrong" way round (are they directional / asymmetric?).

The only thing I have thought which I'd value opinions on is that the tyres were 4000miles used, Michelin pilot3's.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had my wheels refurbished. Look good but...........been on a road trip and there is a hideous vibration!! Not too bad up to 70mph but above that on the motorway it can be felt in the steering wheel, base of the seat. That bad at one point my missus even commented how terrible it was. I'm assuming just a woefully inadequate job on the balancing as the bolts are tight, hubs and rear faces of the wheels were clean. The only thing I have thought which I'd value opinions on is that the tyres were 4000miles used, Michelin pilot3's. It's conceivable these are now on the wrong side, would that have an effect??

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All the weights are near the spokes, which makes me wonder as surely an 11inch rear would have some weight on the other side also if they were balanced properly. I'll take it to someone in the week. Bit disappointing when you've paid for a service and it's a tad crap!! Done 650miles over the weekend which have mostly been spent gripping the steering wheel like I'm trying to choke it!!!

POST 4Original post

You probably aren't feeling the rears. Whether a wide rear needs weight on both edges is up for debate. Unless it's a higher weight, most places would just place at one edge. You can start on Google and look at static and dynamic balancing. Or try to find someone with a Hunter Road Force Balancer. The people I used to use are no longer trading, sadly.

POST 5Original post

Sounds like poor wheel balancing. I had the exact same issue (only felt it at v high speeds!!) after having some new tyres fitted at a local place I've always taken my cars to. Anyway had them rebalanced while the car was recently at RPM and now there're perfect!

POST 6Original post

Interestingly i had a horrible shake that started above 90 mph, changed coffin arms, tuning forks, balancing etc. severral indy services and the problem persisted. Recently had a full geo setup (was miles off) plus new springs and dampers and the car is transformed so thought I'd add this as a possibility, my feeling is the geo was the issue.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car has had most of the front suspension replaced prior to me owning it but recently and I'm planning on doing the rear. It's not got as much 'poise' as my previous 996 so I think there are items that will improve it in general but the vibrations are certainly new after the wheels have been refurbed or definitely a lot worse anyway since that so I'm fairly convinced that's related. I was concerned the tyres been worn and then on the wrong side could be an issue but 650-700 miles this weekend would surely have put that to bed so I'm guessing it's balancing. I'll have them balanced somewhere I trust this week and they'll be dynamic balanced so we'll see what that produces. The road force balancing looks great but I can't seem to find anywhere that does that locally or even relatively local to me!

POST 8Original post

It's possible that one or of the wheels has been damaged, or the tyres have worn unevenly and one or more has been fitted the 'wrong" way round (are they directional / asymmetric?). From what you've described though I agree it's by far most likely to be balancing so hopefully easily resolved.

POST 9Original post

I had the same issue, had the wheels rebalanced properly and it's been fine since.

POST 11Original post

I had a very similar problem. It turned out that although the wheels and tyres were perfectly balanced on the rig, ie rotating in free air, the problem was that one tyre was not perfectly round and had a slight high spot. So it gave similar symptoms to an out of balance (mass) but was actually out of round. New tyres fixed it instantly.

POST 12Original post

Not hollow spokes are they? If they are the may still have sand inside Winny

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Right so the plot thickens and now I am concerned!!! Nipped to see a guy I know, wheels off and onto the balancer. Not a one of them balanced up anywhere near. So he rebalanced and I set off. Car felt better, gave it a run up to speed and then onto a motorway for a quick run and shaking itself to bits again!! I'm going to get the car on a ramp to check it this week but I can't understand why a suspension component would fail and it be in coincidence with the wheels been refurbed. It's not inconceivable but it'd be a hell of an odds. In desperation I'm trying to find some other wheels to borrow to check them against it. The hubs and wheel backs are clean. I was going to reclean them and swap wheels (left to right) but I feel like this something more than that

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They are hollow spokes but I had them refurbed by someone familiar with them?!? Although now I'm a little concerned that this may be an issue

POST 15Original post

I can't see it myself as they'd have noticed it when balancing. i.e. spin wheel, add weights, spin again to check. They'd never in a million years be able to have them running true on the balancer.
