I hate to keep coming whenever there's an issue and not on good terms!
But there's something else going on with the
Cayman
(
987.1
). I've attached a couple of videos to the post so you can hear what's going on. It started after I took a couple of long distance trips, although there's no hinderance to performance, just the noise - car has not given me any issues like this before this started. I walked out to get in one day and I seen a puddle of water coming from underneath the car which makes me think it's the water pump failing but I haven't smelled, or seen any overheating that validates that to be the issue.. Like I stated before, doesn't seem to be a issue with performance, just a awful noise. If you look at the video posted , it's that slight rumbling.. Pretty noticeable. Thank you in advance for any help you all can provide!
Maybe I'm missing it, but this sounds exactly like my
981
2.7.
Can't tell from the video, but I remember when my water pump bearing got noisy in my previous
987.1
Cayman
2.7, the noise developed over about a 50-60 mile trip. I took it in for repair before there was any coolant loss, but the bearing was definitely getting louder.
If you have coolant loss from the front of the engine, and a bearing noise, those are pretty strong signs your water pump is failing.
May need headphones to hear it.. that’s how I was able to, I apologize about that.
Was it a pretty expensive repair? And is there a way to verify that? I’m thinking about taking it to get looked at, considering my regular mechanic is 3 hours from where I stay now.
If you're up for it, should remove the front engine access panel, slack off the belt and see if the water pump pulley has any detectable play in it. Mine was just barely noticeable and my PPI recommended that I replace it.
I was talking to my dealer last time I was in there, and they recommend replacing the water pump @ 10 years preemptively. The price they gave me for my
981
was around $1,100.
I'd be interested in doing this, is there a guide or something you can refer me to to do this?
Just wanted to check back in, took the car to a PCA used car dealership and they confirmed it was infact the water pump bearings, total came up to $1100 which isn't too bad becasue the pump is $500 by itself.. They also confirmed that besides an engine mount, the car is in great condition!
Glad it worked out. Seems like a pretty reasonable cost. I was quoted 4 hours labour to do the water pump. For future reference here's how to access the front panel.
