Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I posted this in another section, but really want to find a solution... I've just taken ownership of a 996 Millennium Edition, which I'm really happy with. However, the car has the original PCM1 system fitted as standard. I'm aware that this has serious limitations in terms of upgrading maps and hooking an iPod up etc. As this unit was standard fit in the car, I don't want to get rid of it altogether and I'd prefer to keep the 'in dash screen' look and set-up. I've seen a lot of debate on the forum around the possibility of upgrading this unit, so my question is... should I upgrade the existing unit and is it possible to connect an iPod to this unit, or is there a better solution i.e. should I remove the unit and replace it with an aftermarket double din unit (e.g. Pioneer, Becker, Kenwood...) and (naturally) keep the PCM unit safely should a future owner want to return the car to its original spec? If anyone has 'ripped out' the original PCM unit and fitted an aftermarket unit, which is the best to go for and what does this mean in terms of the info from the OBC? Any advice or solutions would be really appreciated. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Hi, do a search on PCM1 and you'll see that it's possible to upgrade the maps, so there's no point putting in after market version. Not sure about the iPod, but suspect you can connect it in via the CD changer socket on the back of the unit. Cheers, GD

POST 4Original post

Hi, Pioneer AVIC set ups are the bad boys. PCM 1 very dated and now, even PCM 2 has poor functionality compared to after market products. PCM 3 looks like Porsche have finally woken up to ICE to a point. Many debates on here about this. Certainly the days of if a vehical has PCM or not is no longer a deal breaker come residuals. AVIC is my personal choice. Alan
