Hello all,
Brand new to the forum so please forgive my ignorance.
Just picked up a 2007 Cayman S with 36k miles on it, and a (TPC turbo kit)
Drove it back from Dallas, Tx to Chicago, Il. the trip went well.
After a hard pull going through Oklahoma (Mustang though he was special) I smelled clutch. OK not a big problem.
Took it to lunch 4 days later, pulled into a car wash, got out while it was still running. Washed it. Got back in and went to leave, and the car wouldn't move.
It shifter moves normally, the clutch pedal seems fine, when I shift I can hear the linkage move, but it no go...
Is it possible to wear the disc down to a point where there is complete slippage? I have never experienced this before. Its like someone stole the input shaft or the disc while I wasn't looking.
Any input would be appreciated. Friday night my new Spec 2+ clutch comes in and it goes on the lift. More factual answers then I guess.
Was it a private sale or a reseller with some form of warranty? Check all the local state laws where you are about second hand sales. I'd have it towed to the shop of your choice, have it diagnosed and then pursue a remedy politely with the seller if you can. Good luck. Others may weigh in about the turbo, that will take longevity off the motor in my opinion.
It was from rpmgaragetx.com out of Dallas, sold as is. No warranty given due to the Turbo kit. I have a full shop with a lift, I'm going to do the work myself. I'm just new to "Porsche" in general. I was just curious is anyone had experienced it. I'm running through the possibilities and I have come up with:
Stretched cables not fully engaging
Clutch disc toast
Input shaft stolen... lol
I'm sure I can fix it, I'm just boggled that there were no signs of the damage occurring. no clattering, no bang, no grinding. It's just weird.
I agree, I wouldn't expect the clutch to go from working to nothing with the steps you described. However, if you smelled it just doing a hard pull, then who knows... there may not have been much left (hence they wanted to dump it like they did).
I'd still go back to the shop/dealer to see what's up and what they might do for you. I realize you have little or no legal recourse, but you'd hope they would show some consideration... just don't hold your breath.
Certainly take it to another shop and see what they say... first. Just to get an idea of what might be the issue, then see what the seller sees the same thing. Depending on the issue, you may even contact a lawyer, just to see what options you may have... but, again, don't hold your breath.
Did you do any hard pulls when buying the vehicle? During the test drive?
I'm not hopeful that you'll come out of this clean, but I wish you luck... it's a crappy situation to be in. That said, if it's just a clutch, then it's not a terrible place to be... but I would consider a stronger setup since there's a turbo on there.
I ordered a Spec Stage 2+ that is due in tomorrow so I can do the swap this weekend. Again, I'm hoping it's the clutch. Just learned these things have a DMF. Pretty sure if that was bad I'd know it.
Admittingly I did a few hard pulls and smelled a little clutch, but I've never seen one feel like it just packed its crap and left town before.
You smelled clutch and the car is putting out more horsepower than stock, it's stands to reason that combination could cause quicker or more wear. What's "grey" is whether they knew it needed a clutch. It would be a PIA but I'd wager small claims would at least return the parts cost. Since you have your own facilities and skill its less a big deal than if they sold it to a non enthusiast, still kinda shady on their part.
Well the car is repaired at this point, I literally sheared the hub off of the friction material ring.
Whoa! First time I've ever seen that.
