Anyone have the problem of old foam coming out of the vents? I have small bits of foam flying out and occasionally even hitting me in the eye when the A/C fan is on high.
I read that on some 996s this was a problem, but don't see any posts with the 987. Is this an easy fix?
Yikes.....this is a first for me. Never heard of it.
LOL, on reading the title, I had visions of a frothy mixture spewing out the side vents of the car. Glad I was wrong. OP how old is the car? I've seen something like this on one of my BMWs. It looked like it was from an open-cell weather stripping/seal from inside the heater/ac fan housing. You want to be sure it isn't some mold that accumulated and finally broke loose. I just turned the fan on full blast to clear it out, then vacuumed the interior so I wouldn't be breathing in that stuff.
It's a '06 987 that is parked in 100 degree heat a lot of the time.
For the 996 owners, it was coming from a flap that separated hot air from cold air that had disintegrated.
This weekend, I used a powerful vacum while putting the AC fan on high and A LOT of stuff came out. Mostly black foam, but also a large piece of white foam. Hope this is the end of it. I don't fancy taking the dash apart.
I wonder if there is something that you can circulate through the system to keep the foam from drying out?
Happened on my dad's 996. Quoted something crazy like $5K to fix. Involved taking the whole dash out. He is also in a hot climate. He isn't planning to fix it. I like the idea of trying to suck it out with a strong vacuum every once in a while. I was hoping this wouldn't wind up happening on the 987/997 series. Never heard of it in other, less expensive cars.
Had a similar issue on my system (see my thread and potential fix)

Also have you checked your cabin filter?

I have a similar problem with my
987.2
. I saw that is a common problem on aging VW, Audis and think it's aging foam used to seal doors inside the boxes. I came across this link to a pretty invasive DIY video.
Humble Mechanic: How to fix blend doors
Nasty stuff inside the climate control boxes.
I don't have foam blowing out my vents (06 BS) but it was a Texas car until recently and judging by the seats has spent quite a bit of time with a hot interior so perhaps the foam has already left the facility. What I lso don't have is hot air blowing from my vents, just tepid slightly warm air. Looks like I'm going into the dash....

Haha, yeah there are getting rid of the "little foam bits" solutions and some more invasive I've learned of.
The lack of proper air mixing is the result after the foam is gone.
Lemme know how it goes.
here are some major take-apart solutions and some less take apart more more "Rube Goldberg" solutions I've seen. Not a problem in these parts...yet.
