I seriously doubt that is an aftermarket IMS bearing, more likely a shoddy fix.......

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I bought my 1999 996 in september. It has 100000 miles on it and it is in quite good general condition. However I don't have much history. So this winter I took out the engine and tranny to do many things including the famous IMS bearing. I wanted to know if at the factory Porsche was puting silicone on the IMS cover (see photo with arrows)? I would like to know if the IMS bearing has been changed before it could mean the p.o. was taking care of his car. Before I cleaned that area it looked like this : Was it because the RMS leak?

POST 2Original post

Absolutely not, the factory installed the flange cover dry, no sealant of any type. It looks like someone smeared sealant over a leaking flange cover, which was not an uncommon problem. I seriously doubt that is an aftermarket IMS bearing, more likely a shoddy fix.......
