Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

....the radiator cooling fans should run all the time the engine is on? Mine do and doesnt seem right to me??? :?

POST 2Original post

Don't think so. Thought they only kicked in once a certain temperature was reached. At least that's what mine do. I'm no expert though and am sure someone better informed will be along shortly.

POST 3Original post

I caution that I am far from an expert but I cant imagine the fans should be on all the time. Really should only come on when the car is warm and then is stationary in traffic and there is no moving air to cool it. Or if it has just been started after a shortish break from driving and the engine is still hot. Id be guessing a faulty thermostat or temperature sensor might be sending a higher temperature than accurate causing the car to trigger the fan. On a more sinister note the head gasket would come to mind. On my Elise this has happened twice and is a constant worry. Dont think its much known on 911s though. Is the coolant temperature gauge on the dash going beyond its normal position? Are you sure the fan is on all the time? Might just be that you can only hear it when the car is stopped or barely moving and it does stop when you are moving but cant tell due to road/engine noise.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Andrew, thanks for comments, The temp gauge on the dash moves up and sits just on the 80 degree mark, and no other sign of overheating, the fans come on as soon as I turn the key and start the engine then appear to stay on all the time. Although I have had the car for a little while I only noticed it recently when I replaced all 3 rads and whilst I was checking everything was sealed up... Just left me a little :? as I think without exception every other car I have had they only cut in when the car is in slow traffic etc... hence the post on here.... Geoff

POST 5Original post

mine are on every time i get out & the car is idling, cold or hot. Maybe they switch off over a certain speed? but I've noticed them on every time I've got out of the car to open a gate or something.

POST 6Original post

Have you checked its not your aircon fans. Turn your aircon off I think you'll find all will go quiet.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You are right..... now why didnt I think of that??? Thank you....

POST 8Original post

Don't worry- I went through the same process when I got mine!
