Suggestion

The GT3 splitter is designed to come off if you hit something hard, it uses expanding pushpins to attach itself to the PU, the red strip you see in the pictures is the essential 3M double-sided tape to ensure it's not a short-term installation.

My 'ghetto' way of raising the GT3 up is to use a pair of old 4S brake discs sitting on a cloth for traction and driving up onto them.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 996 facelift with the OEM side skirts but standard front bumper. Id be keen in lowering the appearance of the front of the car to maintain the lower lines without removing a perfectly good bumper. Saw this thread which looked pretty helpful and which shows a GT3 front splitter fitted with almost no modification to a standard 996 bumper (pics included). Looks straightforward and very effective aesthetically and apparently on the road too. Here's the link:- http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89031&highlight=front+spoiler Has anyone done this? And equally importantly... Which suppliers are competitively selling them in Europe (and ideally the UK)? Cheers Andrew

POST 2Original post

I'd be reluctant to follow his instructions to the letter. The GT3 splitter is designed to come off if you hit something hard, it uses expanding pushpins to attach itself to the PU, the red strip you see in the pictures is the essential 3M double-sided tape to ensure it's not a short-term installation. So if I was you I'd drill the proper sized holes in the PU and attach the standard (or cheaper/bigger Cup) splitter. The Cup part costs around £100, the tape and pins about £10. The standard part around £140. I'm trying to find the part numbers for you but I'm struggling

POST 3Original post

POST 4Original post

Hi Andrew, Funny you should mention this as I just recieved the part from Gert at Carnewal this morning. I've been looking at the same link and going ahead with the fit this weekend. Like Damian said though I'm concerned about the fact that it's attached very firmly to the stock PU. Once the font end is up on jack stands I'm going to investigate further. I've already lightly scraped the underside on a speed bump so not too sure... For your referance here's the part number as emailed direct from Gert: ''Our part nr for the GT3 Cup chin spoiler is p96178. That is 100% the correct Cup chin spoiler that comes with double sided tape.'' I also phoned Porsche and enquired about the part number taken from 6speed (996-505-986-92-01C ). It worked out £40 more, even without shipping! I've also bought a selection of large flat washers and self tapping pan head screws. If I do go ahead I'll post results, if not I'll have a GT3 lip up forsale

POST 5Original post

My 'ghetto' way of raising the GT3 up is to use a pair of old 4S brake discs sitting on a cloth for traction and driving up onto them. I'd advise taking off the PU, it's easier and faster, gives you chance to clean the leaves, butts and crap out of the radiators and provides a much better working position to do the job.

POST 7Original post

Why didn't I think of that? :? Oh BTW the duck tape (on the splitter) is fitted to allow the double-sided to cure and stick properly whilst still driving the car. I might just leave it on as I've heard stories of the Cup splitter 'leaving' the car at high speed as the 10kg of extra downforce pops the push-pins.

POST 8Original post

That's the rub, do you do the plastic clips for easy off if hitting something or do the self tapping screws for firm attachment during increased downforce. I'm thinking more the screw way, I wouldn't want it coming off at high speed...

POST 9Original post

A friend of mine has it screwed on and you can start to see the ripples in the PU's paintwork as it starts to stretch it after a while.

POST 10Original post

Stretch it from the increased downforce focused on the screw points or stretched from it hitting stuff? Either way it's not the best option, how long has he had it on?

POST 11Original post

Hitting stuff It stays on longer if you screw it though! I've gone for the 1" of duck tape running down the join, if I hit something lip bends towards the wheels and will pull the tape off. At speed the tape is pushed closer towards the join tightening it. Stops the wind pulling the two parts away from each other.

POST 13Original post

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I'll be pondering this one and awaiting feedback, tips, photos and hmmmm who lives near me?? Damian?? .. you??

POST 14Original post

A GT3 already has the correct holes and a PU long enough so the job's definitely easier, although the car is significantly lower

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All very interesting. What is the difference between the Cup splitter and the "normal" GT3 splitter which seems to be £40 dearer? Any comparative pics? I dont want to go for anything too extreme visually and for speed bumps. As ever, Stuart is one step ahead of me
