Personally I wouldn't rush in to it, you paid for a 111 point check for a reason - you don't then ignore it just for convenience sake.

Suggestion

I now have a C4 and still have the uncertainty, but this is because the car only uses 5% drive to the front until it needs it, when the car detects that the back end is going to go it puts the drive to the front to 55% and pulls you out of trouble, i'm still gettin used to my C4 but its massively better than the Boxster in all ways not just handling.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As part of the pre purchase Inspection from Cridfords I got the car inspected at Porsche Guildford. they have advised the following: 4 year airbag check due 2 year brake fluids check due Locking wheel nut keys missing Non Porsche battery installed NS tailpipe bracket broken Steering wheel alignment slightly out Sat nav disc missing Slight vibration from rear at speed - probably wheel balancing Air con noisy - probably needs re-gassing Cridfords are setting about the repairs as we speak and hopefully they will get through it all in time for me collecting the car tomorrow - whats the probable value/risk of something more sinister of the above work from porsche, as one option might be for me to get the work completed at my local Porsche dealer to enable me to collect the car tomorrow. My schedule over the next month really doesn't allow me to collect the car any other time..... Steve

OMG!!.........not........" Non Porsche battery installed " they tried that one with me as well !!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All fixed!! by Porsche with the exception of the sat nav disc and key for the spare wheel which have been sorted by Cridfords. Thanks for the replies. Steve

POST 6Original post

Dude, listen to Rodders, you're missing 2 vital checks... (wipers? carpets?)

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So... picked it up (my 04 C4S) this morning and drove it home from London (515 miles) immensely happy with it. Drove through all sorts of weather with it but unfortunately couldn't really get over the feeling I got left with my Boxster S in the wet - just no confidence in it in the wet - I am sure its very good in the wet I just don't want to try it out on public roads.... One of the reasons I got rid of the Boxster was because it spun on me at a roundabout on a reasonably wet day??? As soon as I started to drive through the rain today I felt the same feeling of uncertainty as if it were going to do it agan.....probably more in my mind than anything else but.......Is there a course I can take at Knockhill or somewhere similar to re-instill the confidence??

POST 8Original post

A C4S should be super-confident in the wet. What tyres have you got and are they at the right pressure. People on here recommend running them slightly lower than the recommended settings.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tyres are Pirelli P Zero's - I think it's me that's not confident, not the car.... Prob just needed re-assurance that the car won't handle like the Boxster in the wet. Steve

POST 10Original post

Have you got Porsche Stability Management? (PSM button on dash) I drove my C2 on track at abbeville recently in very greasy/half wet conditions. I was amazed at how much it stuck to the floor, with PSM turned off and on 3mm flat spotted P-zero's. Your idea to try a track/instruction course is a good one - it will learn you how amazing the car is, help you drive it correctly in differing conditions and give you the confidence you need to take roundabouts at 50mph. (well maybe not the latter). Enjoy.

POST 11Original post

I'm fairly sure the C4 and C4S came with PSM as standard. That's what I mean about it's performance (as well as four wheel drive). The C4S will handle massively better than the Boxster in the wet. There was a great test that Tiff did on Top Gear (or 5th Gear, can't remember), where he drove this 996 around in a circle with the PSM on and then off. The upshot was that he couldn't get the car to spin out with the PSM on and couldn't get anywhere near the speed with the PSM off.

POST 12Original post

I previously had a Boxster and lost the back end on roundabouts no end of times and although i controlled it and it was fun it made me very unconfident of the handling and how much i could push it into corners, i always was waiting for the back end to go!!! I'm running mine on Perrreli P-zeros and its just had the camber and alignment set up at Porsche the car now feels amazing to drive. I just had to have a front arm replaced, i'm getting a whiney noise from the aircon but i think that it just need to be regassed. Just go out really late one night and have a play and get used to the handling go on a private industrial estate which has roundabouts and see what it can do.

POST 13Original post

I was very nervous about taking delivery of my car full stop..... until Porsche sent me on a Millbrook Porsche Driving Day. Millbrook really gives you a chance to explore the limits of the car in dry/wet, braking, acceleration and some track environments. After that the 911 ownership experience is a much nicer one as I have absolute confidence in the car, I'm not afraid that it's going to spin on a roundabout in the wet just cos I put my foot on the gas!
