If the OPCs wanted to invalidate the warranty claim for the new turbos they easily could have but I suspect faulty turbos are a common issue on the 991 as loads of owners have had the same issue as we did ie hesitation under wide open throttle at high rpm.

This is a good option if you don't want to replace the exhaust, or force them open using the inline option on offer from a fellow PHer per the above post.

Sadly Stef is downsizing and I'm not sure these will be available any more, and AFAIK no other manufacturer uses the OPF trick, so you'd need to remap the car or use a dongle to keep resetting the CEL (not ideal) if you wanted to replace the cats.I wish I installed it at the beginning of my ownership rather than the end, but that's life.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Thanks to the amazing UK weather right now I've managed tro put some decent miles on my (new to me) 992 GTS. One area I'd like to improve is the exhaust sound. It does sound a little synthetic at the top end, and with the valves closed beloe 3800RPM it's not very emotional.
I know with turbos and OPF/GPF it'll never sound amazing, but I'm wondering if anyone has taken the plunge on any upgrades? I'm not interested in voiding the warranty, so options are limited. Initial research shows:
a) Replace exchaust with Akroprovic or similar. I'm not sure whether dropping £5k will give enough of an improvement over the PSE - epecially in volume, although tone would likely be improved.
b) replace the cats with 200 cel sport versions. Other say this will increase volume a little, including more turbo whistle but could throw CEL and may have warranty implications.
c) Install exhaust valve controller (like the Car Graphic unit) to leave valves open. Will add more sound at low revs, but may reduce power by removing back pressure (must be a reason Porsche developed the varibale valves in the 992).
Any thougts welcome!
I faced exactly the same issue...I used the cargraphic valve control unit which made a remarkable difference. I then managed to get a second hand Akra backbox which also made a further difference. They both make a significant difference and it's only now I'm enjoying driving car. I reckon one or the other would be adequate but happy to have both.
Try one of these. Plug and play with no need for a remap. Have two of these on 997 turbo and 991 turbo s. Excellent quality and sound both far better than OEM.
http://www.europipe.be/exhausts.html
Only way to get decent sound out of any turbo car is 200 cel or total decat.
Neither will be porsche warranty friendly I'm afraid unless you have a great relationship with OPC who then might turn blind eye to it
Yes two OPCs ( Hatfield and Swindon) turned a blind eye to the Europipe for warranty work on our 991.2 turbo s inc two new turbos under manufacturers warranty for circa £15k! We put our Europipe on within a week of delivery on the 991 ts. Transforms the sound completely. 991 still on extended warranty. Well worth it in our experience. If the OPCs wanted to invalidate the warranty claim for the new turbos they easily could have but I suspect faulty turbos are a common issue on the 991 as loads of owners have had the same issue as we did ie hesitation under wide open throttle at high rpm. Thoroughly recommend the Europipe your GTS will sound like a Porsche should.
I looked into this as I fancied an Akrapovic but not only is there the warranty issue, there’s also having to get it through MOT when the time comes. I decided an OPC wouldn’t let that through although happy to be corrected.
I think the exchaust controller is the first place to start. ASR components offer what looks like a rebranded Car Grpahic unit for under EUR500 - prob £550 delivered in UK which is arounf £100 less than Car Graphic.
I looked into the Europipe option, but surely those cats would throw a CEL? I'd also be worried about warranty, especially since I didn't buy the car from an OPC.
I think a slip-on exhaust without sports cats might be as far as I'd go - but would be nice to hear one without dumping a lot of cash on one. The Quicksilver looks good for the money, but I'm wondering just how much of an improvement over the PSE you get with any of these. Most likely a better tone, maybe louder burbles in Sport mode, but is it worth the cash?

Resurrecting as wondering if anyone has done anything else on this in the last 12 months?
A PHer has created a little gadget that you can use to keep the valve open. He sells it for about £35. Have a look through the posts. (I've replied to them so you could check down the posts that I've replied to.)

Hi all, just wanted to update this thread with my experience of improving the sound on my 992 GTS.
I initially went ahead with the ASR Exhaust Flap Controller, which cost about £550 imported from Germany. It was easy to install and did make the exhaust sound louder at lower speeds with the added benefit of being able to switch to quiet if needed. I ended up leaving the flaps open at all times, but wasn't ever really satisfied with the sound. This is a good option if you don't want to replace the exhaust, or force them open using the inline option on offer from a fellow PHer per the above post.
I ended up purchasing an Europipe exhaust which cost around £6300 imported from Belgium. I spent hours listening to sound clips of catback exhausts and speaking to owners who've upgraded. I came to the conclusion that the only way to really improve the sound was to replace the cats and remove the OPF filters. The problem was I didn't want to tune the car to remove the inevitable CEL, or endanger the OPC warranty since the car was under a year old.
The Europipe exhaust has 100 cell cats, but are actually more efficient at removing harmful gasss than the factory 700 cell cats (the Euopipe cats contain more precious metals), while being much more free flowing. There are also no OPFs in this exhaust, leaving the exhaust path more free flowing and no longer muting the sound. Stef (the creator and owner of Europipe) has designed the exhaust with pipes that recreate the pressure difference perceived by the ECU should an OPF be installed - there are also no ECU checks for the cats in EU cars, so this exhaust does not trigger any CEL warning lights and should not affect any OPC warranty.
I shopped around for garages to install, but in the end I opted to do it myself. The exhaust was shipped with detailed instructions and all tools necessary to fit. Stef was on hand by email to help with any questions, and I was able to install on my driveway with no issue - and didn't even need to remove the rear wheels (which were centrelocks, so that was handy).
The sound of this exhaust is amazing. I'll never forget the first startup - it's louder (but not obnoxious) and the tone is much more "throaty." You can hear a pronounced turbo whistle and it sounds much more sporty. I never liked the synthetic noise at high revs caused by the sound imposers, piping induction noise in to the cabin. Finally you can hear the exhaust note of the car! The car became a head turner and I had so many compliments of the sound at various car meets I attended. It didn't drone at all, and the pops in Sport mode were quite a bit louder. It's not valved, but that didn't bother me. Cold start was loud but that just added to the occasion of driving the car. My GTS had the glass roof, which I always left tilted to hear the exhaust. The whole car became much more exciting to drive, something I felt it always lacked.
Sadly I've sold my GTS now, having only put 1000 miles on it with the exhaust, but hope this helps others if they want to improve the sound of their car - dramatically. The turbos also spool up much quicker than before, so the whole driving experience is improved, and the acceleration is more brutal than before.
I removed the exhaust prior to sale and still have the ASR controller, so if anyone's intererest feel free to DM me.

Yes quite a price - but inline with Akroprovic, JCR etc if you opt for cats and exhaust.

Oh right, fair enough. There was me thinking 996 Turbo 200 cell exhausts at £1500 were pricey!
Hello everyone
New to this forum following a 20+ year "sabbatical" (previously in the TVR forum before wife & children arrived) and now very happy to be back.
Now run a Porsche 992 GTS. Beautiful car and just right for me, perfect blend of daily & track car.
Am considering the Akrapovic Slip On Titanium exhaust. What are members' views on it and who would be your choice of installer (e.g. RPM Technik, Carbonwurks, Litchfield etc) and why?
Many thanks

Design 911 sell their dtek stainless exhaust for about £950 and a titanium version for £1500…… seems good value, anybody fitted one?

Have used JZM for various things from servicing to geo, etc. the are approved Manthey installers, JCR etc. also straightforward and not overly expensive for work done
