Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

The IMS bearing in this engine was "beefed up" (but still using ball bearings).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I am looking at purchasing a 2006 Carrera S with 15,000 miles, manual transmission, and sport chrono plus pkg. How concerned do I need to be about the IMS issue costing me a new motor. What year vehicles experienced IMS bearing problems? This is going to be a daily driver with occasional spirited driving but no track time. Thanks for helping out a newbie!

POST 2Original post

Do a search. This has been discussed many times.

POST 3Original post

2006 is the 997.1 and the M97 motor. IMSB failures are generally thought to be rare in the 997.1. If it were me I wouldn't worry about the IMSB. The prior gen 996-986/M96 was the subject of a class action settlement. I would get a thorough PPI. I would also look closely at any maintenance records. With that low mileage regular maintenance should have been done on time, but sometimes owners defer. If in doubt, budget to get everything up to date.

POST 4Original post

As noted before this is a 997.1 model. The IMS bearing in this engine was "beefed up" (but still using ball bearings). There is nothing much you can do about the bearing in this engine because it can be replaced not by breaking the case and opening up the engine. My suggestion (in addition to other comments) is to drain the oil, drop the pan and cut open the oil filter element. You are looking for evidence of metal shavings. If you find that - RUN! Otherwise, if you purchase the car, use a magnetic drain plug plus a metal detection unit from LN Engineering. Those are my thoughts.

POST 5Original post

I would not worry about the IMS as much as cylinder scoring with the 3.6 and especially the 3.8 engines. Have the PPI include borescoping the cylinders through the sump area with the piston at TDC. That is how you check for scored bores in the early stages.
