Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Apologies for a 'numpty' type question :? but I'm just curious to know what the item is shown in the picture below. I notice that it isn't there on earlier cars (pre 2000 / 2001?) Thanks

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, they're in the front aren't they? ...

POST 4Original post

fools. Everyone knows that only air cooled cars came with a Flux Capacitor 8)

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

YEA, but what is it???? I was just curious this morning but now I've asked the question I really want to know, someone please tell me ... Oh, and if you haven't got a Flux Capacitor installed check this out!!! http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=28

POST 7Original post

I've no idea either, but it's in my facelift car as well!

POST 8Original post

It's an emission pump. When Porsche changed the engine it coincided with a piece of legislation that ment fresh air has to be pumped 'into' the exhaust gases to meet regs. If you listen you'll hear it start up when you first start the car up. It will run anywhere from 30sec to 3 min IIRC. It will also come on when revs drop like when you're slowing down in traffic... I think that's correct :? 8)

POST 9Original post

Someone must know !! Been looking at all the expanded parts here but the closest thing I can see would be this http://dcauto.gotdns.com/section/index/3653096/108 an Air Injection System. Pump looks kinda similar but the mounts look all wrong. Best guess I can come up with.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brilliant, I can relax now, ahhhhhhh. One of the reasons for my curiosity is that my 3.4 has one, whilst (I think) every 3.4 engine bay shot I'd seen didn't have one, whereas every 3.6 did. Thanks everyone

POST 13Original post

Porsche call it secondary Air injection as Stuart said its an emmissions thing. Activates at start up the oxygen enrichment it provides helps to get the cats up to operating temp. quickly. Added from 2000 MY cars onwards Good write up on pg 217-218 of the '996 essential companion' by Adrian Streather

POST 14Original post

:thumb: I knew I'd read it somewhere... I was pretty vague on the recall though.

POST 15Original post

I think that Stuart has the measure of the thing. Its not an auxilliary vaccuum pump, but emmisions yes. Regards Big Bob :bye: PS I expect the member who asked this serious question was a bit fed up being fluxed about :floor:
