My porsche garage ( Aberdeen ) advised that the timing needs to be checked before the car is started, so it was delivered to my dealer on a transporter last mondey and they can not even look at it till tghe end of next week!!!!

Not touching the motor at all i replaced the 22 pence washer and refilled the oil.

So i set about to dump the oil and replace the washer - As soon as i got the 'sump plug' out i realised that it was infact the hydraulic timing chain tensioner cartridge!!!!

Hi Folks, I am new to this forum as just purchased a 99 996 last week. Drove it 300 miles home from Manchester to find a small oil leak coming from what i thought to be the 'sump plug' sealing washer. So i set about to dump the oil and replace the washer - As soon as i got the 'sump plug' out i realised that it was infact the hydraulic timing chain tensioner cartridge!!!! Not touching the motor at all i replaced the 22 pence washer and refilled the oil. My porsche garage ( Aberdeen ) advised that the timing needs to be checked before the car is started, so it was delivered to my dealer on a transporter last mondey and they can not even look at it till tghe end of next week!!!! Does the timing really need checked after having the cartridge out? Seems to me as long as themotor is not touched when the cartridge is out it should be ok? Any advive would be greatly appreacieted Deano.....

Hi,there the timing chain tensioner is under some tension when trying to remove it,did you hear anything move when you took the tensioner out ? it would of sounded like a timing chain jumping aover some metalic teeth on the cam-shaft ? if not then engine timing has remained the same and should be fine. Regards mike
